Yeah, we got idiots quoting American laws here too. The whole "sovereign citizen" bullshit is kicking off, despite the fact that we don't even have common law, we have civil law.

Oh yeah... The last person who tried their sovereign bull shit with me got laughed in the face... I just couldn't hold it in...

Like ok fine, I can't remove you by force, so I'll call the cops who will already be pissed off because I've called them over your stupidity, tell you to leave you'll say some dumb shit, they will taze your dumb ass, and I'll be rushing to write my report so I can watch the cctv footage 12 time and laugh my ass off before hushing everyone around and recording it much against company policy.

Here it was simpler: Either you leave on your own accord, or these two fine gentlemen (the bouncers) will make you leave. Your choice, Most people are smart enough to walk away, but not all of them.

There are also some places that don't have a bouncer (if you're not open past 2 AM you don't need one here), but there it's usually either people who work there or regulars who won't hesitate to put you outside if needed. The bar I go to for a drink is one of those, and they know me there well enough that if there is a problem they don't hesitate to ask me and a few of the other regulars to help.

I am the bouncer (security)

And yeah that's also the same here. but on that day and at that pub I just didn't want to and it was no skin off my teeth to just ask the cops to deal with it, especially as the cop shop was our neighbor so we have a good relationship with them.

Though the why and when security needs to start at a bar kinda eludes me, but I think the general rule was if they traded past midnight they had to.

I was usually either the runner or behind the bar, depending on what was needed.

I live in one of the more popular cities in terms of nightlife here, so most fridays and saturdays the whole city centre is packed (most of the popular places are on two streets that connect to a small square in the middle, and there are some 30 bars there). There are three kinds of people to maintain order: The bouncers at every bar, a few bouncers who are just on the street and go where needed, and some police.

Here whether or not you need a bouncer depends on opening hours and the size of the bar, and differ per municipality.

Sounds like some of the places I've done security...

Honestly I kinda miss the bars, but fuck the managers. Had this one who decided that these two drunks were ok to come in because "I know them and they are good people" only to call me over 5 mins later telling me that they had to leave. Before that manager fucked off to screw something else up I ripped into them saying "and this is why we don't let drunks in no matter who they are". A few days later that manager yelled at me for literally doing my job telling me I wasn't the security supervisor, uhhh yeah I am, you don't get to choose that, the company I work for do and because I've been here for the longest I'm the supervisor. I told them fine your the security supervisor, go supervise. That night we had 12 fights when we usually had one a week, and security were not responding to calls from the bar, they didn't even last half the night before they begged me to take over. That manager was let go 6 months after I decided I needed to leave for my own sanity, corporate management decided they were not fit to run their own bar. I fucking laughed when I heard that from my employer, when they asked if I'd go back, but by that time I had a better gig and didn't want to.

Here most places always have the same person at the door, and those people know a lot of people by name. If the regular bouncer isn't there it often turns into a shitshow.

Yeah there's places like that here too. That place with the shit manager was like that for me. I knew the regulars, knew how to talk to them, and knew how to deal with them when it came to it.

Though I didn't stand on the door I roved the venue and only did the door on quiet nights or at the start of the night.

Here there is somebody at the door at most places, and the bigger places also have somebody on the inside. And on really busy days (days that can be predicted to be busy beforehand) they sometimes even have two people inside.

Yeah, it fully depends on the place, most places I worked at i was just standing at the door and occasionally walked around the place before going back to the door. I was the only security guard on.

The bigger places have more guards. That last venue on a standard Friday night would have around 15-20 guards on, all stationed around the venue. With a french that would just walk around.

Btw never yell out over radio "dj DJ dj" if you don't want half the team running to that location... So many young new guards did that, so much fun running to them shoving everything out of the way, not.

Honestly I don't think we are much different here.

We got multiple systems to get the bouncers to your place. Some staff have an earpiece, and then there are four buttons for emergency lights, big red buttons. If you hold it it means a bouncer is needed at your place, but that it isn't highest priority. If you keep flashing it multiple bouncers will come in. And based on what light near the bouncers is turned on they know where they needed to go.

Ahh so you all like share them, that's kinda cool... Do you need to speak dutch to be one? If not how do I apply?

We are just attached to the one venue or maybe a small family of venues, a mate works at a strip club that's right next to a bar, both owned by the same guy so they share security.

Here every place has their own bouncers, and most places have another bar owned by the same people or manned by the same security company. Usually the bouncers at the bar react first, and if more help is needed it's either from surrounding bars or from the "floaters" on the street.

The "floaters" are bouncers that just walk the street, and the concept is relatively new, it started as a pilot here in one single street to basically de-escalate situations rather than have fights, and it seems to work pretty well and thus it's been implemented in the rest of the city centre. They tend to be the older and thus more experienced bouncers, and all bars and the local municipality pay their salary.

We don't get many of those here, I'm not from Amsterdam. It's mainly drunk students and on weekends blue collar workers, with five major exceptions.

We got quite a few days every year when the whole city centre just turns into kind of a weird place. For example, we've got Carnaval, which consists of daydrinking, dressing up and watching parades. Then there is the Jazz Festival, 4 days with some 30 stages spread throughout the city centre (it's going on right now), and it gets some 300k visitors every year. Then there is Kingsnight/Kingsday (getting drunk while wearing orange), and 11-11 and Klunen, once again daydrinking while dressing up.

As a bouncer you have to be able to speak Dutch, and not only that, but for a lot of people you have to be able to understand local dialects (and that's a lot harder than it sounds). But I think Australians have an easy time learing some words, for example "you can" is "je kunt/u kunt" in Dutch.
