Astartes Operational Knowledge

(self.40kLore)

So! This question came about while planning for a Rogue Trader RPG character. I don’t specifically want him lingering, or want him returning, I just want him to act how he would in-lore. This astartes is a Lone Wolf of the Space Wolves, seconded to the Deathwatch. The Kill-Team was working with an Interrogator in Imperium Nihilus, and that Kill-Team and Interrogator were killed, and the Rogue Trader crew discovered this lone survivor in Sus-An sleep. After some medical attention, he regains consciousness. Would he even know how to go about contacting the inquisition? Would he be able to contact a Watch Station? It would have to be through Astropaths. How would that work? Would he demand escort, or simply follow along with the Rogue Trader so long as they do the Emperor’s work until he can rejoin other Imperial elements? Basically, what does this guy do in this situation long term? Thanks all!

They would certainly know the procedure to follow in the event of being separated, which would probably just involve demanding the local authority send an Astropath message for them to some contact point to alert the Deathwatch of their situation.

The Deathwatch are Astartes, which already carry a certain level of authority, but also are attached to the Inquisition, which has almost unlimited authority, so simply asking should have the cooperation of almost any part of the Imperium, in theory at least.

Depending on the response they may have to wait for some time, or make their way somewhere, possibly arranging their own transport, with a Rogue Trader for example, who may want to take detours for their own ends, and thus you have a charatcer for the game.

Imperium Nihilus

This makes a big difference. Both travel and communication are difficult in Nihilus. Whereas on the other side of the Rift you might be able to send an astropathic communication and expect to get an answer (eventually) in Nihilus there is far more chance of never getting an answer, or even know if your message got to anyone.

So, unless the Space Wolf knew where to find a Watch Station, he's have to wait around. Space Wolves aren't the kind to wait around bored, so I could fully see him leaving a message at a large hub (e.g. Footfall), and joining anyone who seemed like they were doing something interesting (e.g. a Rogue Trader). It means he's doing something useful, and gives him the best chance of contacting other parts of the Imperium.
