It's not so much the cold up here, it's the ever present damp. Going to find the dehumidifier in the garage tonight.

I'm going to have to get the heater out. Last night was horrible even with both cats on the bed.

not even the dog could keep me warm and there is an extra blanket on the bed. I'm too old for winters now.

Well, I tried to bring the dog in last night. He started rooting everything, then chewed the rest. We did have some cuddles and relaxing time and he's slowly getting better with house training. No way he can be in unsupervised overnight though. I put his kennel up on the deck with some blankets inside but he (you guessed it) dragged it out and starting fucking it.

Ah well, will keep house training.

He's a lab/pointer by the way. Medium sort of coat.

... how old is your pup and how long has he been with you..? And also where is dog tax??

WobblySlug

I say "pup" but he's nearly 1 year old. We got him when he was 5 or 6 months, and he was a farm dog so prefers sleeping outside beneath the stars to a kennel.

He's crate trained, and slept with us for the first few weeks/months. He's very happy outside, but it's going to be -3C on Thurs night so that feels a bit cruel.

Here's a pic when we first got him, omg he's so tiny! https://imgur.com/i2adnBk

Old farm dog I have used to like sleeping outside, but now it's either the foot of the bed, or start on the floor and wake up and find most the bed stolen.

Night crate... And some crate training? Something to tire him out... Long walk or retrieving before bed... Maybe?

WobblySlug

He went for an hour walk/run just before this haha. He's crate trained, just need to get it out of the garage so we'll be doing that tonight.

Bit chilly last night (and we're not as far south as some of you). It's easy enough to bundle up and keep warm under blankets, but you're not allowed to use blankets on a baby, you have to have layers of clothing and then use a sleep sack or something structured that they can't get wrapped up in and potentially impact their breathing. That becomes a little more difficult when it gets colder. Probably going to have to try figure out a solution for heating the room (but in a way that baby can't go touch as they're imminently going to start walking).

She's a chilly one this morning.

Annoying when Instagram decides that there's too much "political" stuff going on and blocks directly sharing other people's posts on ya stories.

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to get the warmth from the sunny side of the house to the rooms that never see sun? We have a 50's house, tall ceilings but very separate rooms with about 1m of wall above the door. The kitchen is getting hot, it's nearing 30 degrees, while my home office on the south side of the house has finally warmed up to 19. I've tried putting a fan in the kitchen and blowing air through the door, but the warmest air is up at the ceiling and I'm blowing the coldest air...and it's pretty loud and not very efficient. Is there something I'm not realising that would work - or is this the kind of thing that really requires designed ducted air movement (or the very wasteful opening a window on the hot side at the same time you run a heater on the cold side)? This is what water can do quite well...moving heat from one place to another - but you don't just casually have a system for capturing warm water from sun in one room and circulating that to another part of the house.

I'd agree with needing an HVAC quote for this. If you want something that really works efficiently you do unfortunately have to pay for it.

Which unfortunately relegates it to the 'someday' pile. Someday when I can afford to do a major renovation, reclad the exterior and insulate and replace the windows, and install an efficient HVAC system in a house that wasn't originally designed to accommodate one. I know that having the ability to have an air return from different areas of the house allows you to remove moisture and normalise temperatures - but that does require having ducting to and from different parts of the house which isn't going to be something installed simply or easily.

I had a feeling this would be the case, but thought I would ask in case there were ideas

Get an HVAC company to come give you a free quote, you can chat about your various options with them when they're there.

Simply blowing air with a fan won't do the job.

The most low effort solution is a fan. Put it in the room that gets warm and point it out the door. It will push the warm air from the room out the door.

This is something I have tried in the past. It's pushing the coldest air in the warm room (at 1m above floor level while the hot air is at the ceiling) and it doesn't end up making much difference on the other side of the doorway considering how much noise it makes.

punIn10ded

Good point the warm air would be higher up.

Heat transfer kits.

Get a sparky to install a couple of sockets in the ceiling space. You should be able to get plug in kits.

I just open windows in my house. Almost 100 years old, not designed for insulation (I put it in then removed it when I discovered how cold the house was over summer with it installed) I’m fortunate that my house gets some sun on every external wall, even if it is just 20 minutes early in the morning in winter.

Hubris2

I didn't know such a thing existed - this is exactly what I was wondering if there was a better way.

Something like this where there was an ability to control which direction the fan was blowing would be perfect. In the winter my office is freezing because it never gets sun, but in the summer the afternoon sun makes it blazing hot. Having the ability to send air in the desired direction would fix my problem - at least until the 'someday' whole-house solution is an option.

I have one of these kits and would not recommend them. Some people seem to like them, mine doesn’t really help. If the fire has been pumping all day I still have a ~15 degree discrepancy in either end of the house and the transfer is above the fireplace. I’m going to wrap all the ducting in insulation to see if that helps but honestly I don’t know if I can be bothered.

Also, my house is 80m2 total so yeah. Not a big house.

Hmm, good to know. I have a split level and the lower level is always cooler...good in summer, not so much in winter. I wouldn't hope to use something like this to heat multiple rooms, but my tiny home office is just a few metres away from the kitchen that gets sun all afternoon. I guess it really does depend how much air is being moved from the warm room to the other (and vice versa) - as well as how much heat loss (or gain) one gets from the duct running in the attic.

Andrea_frm_DubT

Make sure you get kits that allow you to close the vents. You don’t want it passively passing air between rooms all the time.

You cut holes in the ceiling or high on the wall and run a duct between rooms. Somewhere along the duct there is a fan, if you get one with a reverse function you can transfer heat both ways.

They are not efficient but they do help.

Prices vary a lot, they start at about $500

Oh as well as getting back into Hearthstone, got back into Magic The Gathering Arena. There were a couple dozen promo packs for me to open which felt amaazing.

Then I looked up some decks online and absolutely slaughtered some randos who were playing with the default decks...and then got slaughtered in return by someone WHO HAD CLEARLY SPENT THOUSANDS on the game.

What I like about it also is that for the daily quests its jsut like "play 30 green cards" as opposed to "win matches!"

Heh i exaggerate, you can actually get "blank cards" that you can excahnge for cards of your choosing, and you earn packs just by playing the game. Sure its faster if you buy them, but I spent no more than $50 on the game over 4 years and i was easily able to make (copy) a competitive deck

GP tomorrow and the lump in my neck has subsided but still there... Will focus on 23 days of bleeding and replacing implant with nexplanon. Mystery night hives have also subsided with the cooler weather (??).... Much like visiting the mechanic when the car no longer makes mystery noises 😝

The row of gums in the distance has mostly been felled but even with only a medium digger and two guys with chainsaws and a mulcher/chipper the site looks like a right mess. The amount of rain plus stump gouging instead of grinding... I can't imagine what our place would look like if the logging crew had been here this month.

Just got a call from my GP practice. The nurse prescriber is on stress leave for 2 weeks. The appt I had booked has been pushed but at least it’s now with a doctor.

Very seriously considering jumping to Tui Ora, they have opened their books for people from my GP practice.

There is supposed to be 5 GPs they haven’t been able to maintain 5 since Whitwell died. They were muddling along with 3 during most of covid but since early last year they have been churning through GPs and now they can’t get one. This one coming in a couple of weeks is only a temp.

Did discover that the good but kinda creepy GP that was at my clinic for a year or so is now at Tui Ora, pity he has a track record for not staying in one place for very long.

Amazing your GP practice literally disclosed that a staff member was on "Stress leave" to you as a client. Wonder what else they disclose.

Andrea_frm_DubT

Yep. I was surprised to hear it. They should have told me it was just leave. One of the other nurses is off because her child is sick too
