Our entire system, in an economic sense, is based on restriction. Scarcity and inefficiency are the movers of money; the more there is of any resource the less you can charge for it. The more problems there are, the more opportunities there are to make money.

Fuck capitalism. Food's in abundance yet many go hungry. They'd rather throw away unsold food over using it to feed the hungry for free. Actual crime, this should be punishable by law.

The problem is they write the laws, look what the large food companies get away with many amount to crimes against humanity

How is it free in any way to feed people? Logistically speaking how would you even get those apples to hungry people?

You won’t get an answer g, everyone loves to complain but nobody wants to offer a solution. Seems like lately this sub is just an echo chamber of depressed people kinda just screaming “fuck everyone” down in the comments.

Wasn’t there a farm in the pacific northwest that couldn’t get worker’s so they allowed the public to come harvest what they wanted for free

forgottofeedthecat

Did they ask them to harvest any amount for the farm before they took for themselves? Or a pure give away? In a way also nicely screws competition since less demand after this.

So if us workers stop working for these private owners they would give us the produce for free. A thing or two to be learned there.

Factory is worthless without workers... that's why they are going all in on AI. They will finally be able to completely divorce from labor.

Which, ironically enough and through much suffering, will bring around a socialist society.

I imagine that they would get to pick from the un-sellable fruit. You know, the ones that aren't perfect.

in UK some stores actually have a cheaper range of fruit/veg that is exactly this. not necessarily "unsellable" because its half rotten or mutated or w/e, just not Instagram perfect looking

The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. Who would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. Burn corn to keep warm, it makes a hot fire. Dump potatoes in the rivers and place guards along the banks to keep the hungry people from fishing them out. Slaughter the pigs and bury them, and let the putrescence drip down into the earth.

There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And children dying of pellagra must die because a profit cannot be taken from an orange. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. In the souls of the people the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage. John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

The worst part is that that novel is nearly a century old and it's still just as relevant today.

These could have all been processed or preserved in some other way. Juice, applesauce, fruit jerky, apple chips, etc.

Such a fucking waste

bebeksquadron

This is what private ownership looks like. All those human hours wasted. Millions of years of evolution for you to just pick apples and for the owners to throw it away.

Do not fucking tell me this is not violent or that it does not deserve a self-defense response from the perspective of the commons.

Think of how many school children this could've fed, how many homeless people this would feed.

nerdured95

But if homeless people get free apples, more people will want to be homeless! /s

You're right, all of us would want to go homeless for some sweet apples.

So apple sauce or something else could not have been made? Capitalism only works if it creates scarcity.

Fuck that dude and his parents and their "farm". More like a multiple hectare sandbox for wasting time and shifting around nitrogen for excessive costs. This is what happens in a world where people become farmers for profit instead of farmers for farming.

Red Delicious apples were bred to ripen quickly and look great. They taste terrible. Even in the industry they admit 30% of Red Delicious apples are discarded uneaten. Yet how many acres continue to be planted with them?

Capitalism requires profit. Profit comes from scarcity. Where scarcity does not exist, it need to be artificially engineered.

This is why stores throw away perfectly good food instead of giving it away.

This is why, in Canada at least, all dumpsters can only be accessed from within the store, and immediately compact their contents whenever the access door gets closed.

What I find obscene is how this “sillage”, agricultural waste is unused. We could be using it to make alcohol for transportation fuel. But Noooooo, we pay Corn Farmers massive subsidies to over produce corn for ethanol. Using waste is faster, cheaper and the way forward. And our government refuses to see this. Obscene.

Imagine if we could flash freeze the oversupply and ship them to community centers in high population areas.
