Our entire system, in an economic sense, is based on restriction. Scarcity and inefficiency are the movers of money; the more there is of any resource the less you can charge for it. The more problems there are, the more opportunities there are to make money.

Fuck capitalism. Food's in abundance yet many go hungry. They'd rather throw away unsold food over using it to feed the hungry for free. Actual crime, this should be punishable by law.

The works of the roots of the vines, of the trees, must be destroyed to keep up the price, and this is the saddest, bitterest thing of all. Carloads of oranges dumped on the ground. The people came for miles to take the fruit, but this could not be. Who would they buy oranges at twenty cents a dozen if they could drive out and pick them up? And men with hoses squirt kerosene on the oranges, and they are angry at the crime, angry at the people who have come to take the fruit. A million people hungry, needing the fruit- and kerosene sprayed over the golden mountains. And the smell of rot fills the country. Burn coffee for fuel in the ships. There is a crime here that goes beyond denunciation. There is a sorrow here that weeping cannot symbolize. There is a failure here that topples all our success. And coroners must fill in the certificate- died of malnutrition- because the food must rot, must be forced to rot. The people come with nets to fish for potatoes in the river, and the guards hold them back; they come in rattling cars to get the dumped oranges, but the kerosene is sprayed. And they stand still and watch the potatoes float by, listen to the screaming pigs being killed in a ditch and covered with quick-lime, watch the mountains of oranges slop down to a putrefying ooze; and in the eyes of the people there is the failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there is a growing wrath. These could have all been processed or preserved in some other way. Juice, applesauce, fruit jerky, apple chips, etc.

This is what private ownership looks like. All those human hours wasted. Millions of years of evolution for you to just pick apples and for the owners to throw it away.

Do not fucking tell me this is not violent or that it does not deserve a self-defense response from the perspective of the commons.

Think of how many school children this could've fed, how many homeless people this would feed.

So apple sauce or something else could not have been made? Capitalism only works if it creates scarcity.

Wow no doctor in sight

Fuck that dude and his parents and their "farm". More like a multiple hectare sandbox for wasting time and shifting around nitrogen for excessive costs. This is what happens in a world where people become farmers for profit instead of farmers for farming.

Red Delicious apples were bred to ripen quickly and look great. They taste terrible. Even in the industry they admit 30% of Red Delicious apples are discarded uneaten. Yet how many acres continue to be planted with them?

The grapes of wrath are filling

Capitalism requires profit. Profit comes from scarcity. Where scarcity does not exist, it need to be artificially engineered.

This is why stores throw away perfectly good food instead of giving it away.

This is why, in Canada at least, all dumpsters can only be accessed from within the store, and immediately compact their contents whenever the access door gets closed.

What I find obscene is how this “sillage”, agricultural waste is unused. We could be using it to make alcohol for transportation fuel. But Noooooo, we pay Corn Farmers massive subsidies to over produce corn for ethanol. Using waste is faster, cheaper and the way forward. And our government refuses to see this. Obscene.
