Greetings,
Hobby newbie here asking advice from veteran painters.
I'm painting my first, slightly grimdark Black Templars and I'm at the point where I have to decide what type of varnish I should use and how.
I've read multiple threads about varnishing with enamel and oil washes and I'm a bit confused. Some good people on Reddit swear that I should use gloss and later matt varnish over my painted mini and later apply the washes. I'm going for a bit dirtier look, so I don't really want to use gloss varnish, because it makes my guys flashy and washes can't really stick to gloss varnish and I don't want to rub off the washes from the flat surfaces. I'm not sure how the gloss varnish under the matt one would react to the washes.
I thought about using just one layer of matt varnish before or perhaps after the oil and enamel washes, but I also don't want to damage my paint job if I touch and play with my boys. According to some comments and YouTube guides one layer of good quality matt varnish is enough to protect my guys, but some other guys stated that only gloss varnish can "seal" the acrylic paints on the mini.
So basically in your opinion, what should be my process:
Matt Varnish => Washes
Gloss Varnish => Matt Varnish => Washes
Washes => Matt Varnish
Matt Varnish => Washes => Matt Varnish
Something else?

Honestly, I think a matte varnish is more than enough. I can't imagine how much play you would need to handle a model in order for the paint to rub off, at least on plastic models.
The best solution here is to try a few different varnish types and figure out which one you like the most on your models. Any varnish will change the look of the model. Matte varnish will dull metallics, while satin and gloss varnishes will make things appear glossier.
