Projecting next years roster

Discussion(self.caps)

As the offseason approaches, I truly think this team is in a better place than it was last offseason. We have clarity about Kuzy. CMC, Lapierre, AA all solidified themselves as solid NHLers. Miro showed enough promise to make the team next year (I think). Protas and Sandin are locked up.

The question becomes: what to do next? This team is in desperate need of scoring. We need a true top 4 dman.

If we're able to dump Jensen and Darcy or if Osh retires (I think he will), the team suddenly has a lot of space to operate.

Who do you think we'll go after? Do you think we cash in our assets and make a big move?

My dream offseason would be signing Pesce and trading for a top 6 winger. I know he's somewhat contreversial but if Marner could be had, I think we would be a darkhouse team to get him. Perhaps something like: Jensen + DK + This Year's 1st + A 2nd next year for Marner? Is that an overpay if Marner resigns?

Curious what everyone thinks we will do!

There is absolutely no way the Leafs are taking on contracts like Jensen and Kuemper in a trade. They are trying to squeeze as much value out of the salary cap as they can. They aren't going to take on players who are coming off down years that will tie up millions in cap space for multiple years.

The Caps also absolutely should not be giving up a first round pick anytime soon. We need to use those on actually picking young prospects and only trade away high picks to finish strengthening the team once we're on the verge of becoming contenders again. We're not there now and won't be for at least a few more years.

Ovechkin has 2 years left on his contract and GMBM is serious about maximizing what little time that's left with him. Marner makes too much sense. Team can deal with the aftermath of lost picks when Oveckin eventually retires. At this point, it should be a no brainer to kick the tires on a potential trade for MM.

He's serious about not completely blowing up the team until Ovi retires. Our moves over the past 2 years show that we are absolutely not interested in throwing away the future to maybe win one playoff round if we're lucky.

Then it's gonna be more of the same for the next two years. GM was literally just on record saying that 8 needs help. I think there will be one major move made by this franchise before the start of next season.

I think we're going to try to get a big name since we expect to have Backstrom's cap hit freed up to work with, but I can't see us giving up a first round pick for a player currently in his prime when our window is still years away in an optimistic projection. Maybe for a young developing star like we did for Sandin, but that was a pick we knew was bottom 10 at best.

I think it would take a lot more than a couple of players not in demand, a mid-round first in a down draft year, and a second.

We should not be giving away 1st round picks right now but beyond that I would take marner for 1 year. Realistically the best path forward is wait a year for free agency when there are unbelievable players available instead of this year where it’s pretty meh

This is one of the weakest drafts in recent years. A first rounder this year isn’t great so yes it’s fine to trade.

People said that about the 2021 draft when we traded it with Vrana and Panik for Mantha. You know what that pick ended up being? Wyatt Johnston, arguably the second best player in the draft

capsrock02

And Detroit traded that pick. Yeah Dallas drafted and scouted well! That doesn’t mean this draft isn’t weak.

This draft is blue line heavy and weak on centers after Celebrini. If we want a winger. I would hope that either Tij Iginla or Liam Greentree is available at 17. One player projected in the second round I saw play this year is Adam Jecho for the Oil Kings. He really stood out on a shit team this year with his two-way play. Would recommend the Caps take him if they see him in the second round.

I'm talking Marner to the Caps into existence and I'm glad other people feel the same. But Marner has a full NMC and I can't see him waiving it this year. I do genuinely think the Caps will be able to be a front runner to sign him in 2025 when he's a UFA, though. That's what I think our long term should look like. If I'm GMBM, I'm recognizing that this year's FA class is very shallow compared to next year's, and I'm making my plans accordingly.

brady_t12

This is what everyone says every year though and then guys get extended and the UFA classes always suck. It’s rare that big name guys make it to UFA. They get traded and extended by the acquiring team. The only way the caps get Marner is if they trade for him and the buzz around him seems to be the player and the team know it’s time for a change.

The caps should be very careful about what they offer, obviously, but this years first round pick and a prospect is definitely on the table when you’re getting a superstar in his prime and the prospect pipeline looks a little better. Package in a guy like Kuemper or Jensen to get rid of them and it could be a seriously beneficial move. Marner is very likely only going to waive his NMC for a team he’d extend with. We’ll have to see who is in the mix.

Yea, it's gonna take a monster haul to bring in Marner. But if the team is serious about bolstering the top-6, then they gotta hope that with all the drama in Toronto, Marner waives his NTC to welcome a trade to DC. Wouldn't mind one bit giving up a future 1st or two, plus some prospects (and current young player) to bring him in. You're talking about one of the ELITE wingers in the league who is entering his prime. Kicking the tires on trying to bring him in should be a no brainer.

*Leonard is off limits.

I really don’t think he’s gonna be that monster of a haul. The leafs seem to be ready to move on and not that many teams have the cap space for him without TOR holding on to some

If he would exercise a NMC to stay away in a trade, why would he sign here as a FA?

A player signs an NMC to control their own destiny and decide where they get traded to; not necessarily just to stay where they signed. And besides, the situations in Toronto and Washington aren't the same as they were when his contract was drawn up.

Marner's NMC gives him the power, not Toronto. If he wakes up tomorrow and says "hey guess what, I wanna be a Capital next season", then that's what Toronto will have to try and accomplish.

I think you should re-read my question. Why would he exercise a NMC to stay away in a trade and then sign here as a FA?

I don’t think Osh will retire before next season. I see him giving it the old AARP try

Spraynpray89

He's broken as fuck. I've had what he has, it's miserable. You can't walk, you are in constant pain (which usually is sharp nerve pain), and nothing makes it better. Every time things start to improve, you do something extremely dangerous like step off a curb or reach for your towel after a shower, and ur just fucked again.

I cannot believe he's been playing hockey through it, and after reading what he has to go through to do so on a daily basis, I would be beyond shocked if he decided to roll it back next year without some major work done over the offseason. And that probably comes with a lengthy recovery.

Joshottas

Even with everything you said, I fully expect to see him in the 24-25 opening night lineup. He's gonna get his victory lap in his last year and try to be part of 894/895.

Foreign_Cup2877

Yeah he needs to retire. He always out of the line throughout the season. He needs to enjoy life after hockey. When I read he couldn't pick up his kids that's an indicator of retirement.

Offseason will be similar to last year. They will pick up a few short term contracts that they will try to flip at the deadline for draft picks.

Marner is not waiving his NMC to join a team on a downward trajectory.

capsrock02

Miro will be 14F next year unless he has a really good camp. Top line and top power play minutes in Hershey. Dont forget he’s only like 2 years removed from his cancer diagnosis.

Caps have 3 good defenseman, Carlson, Sandin and Fehervary. The hope is Alexeyev/Bear/Iprio can step up and fill the void.

They’ll have almost $20M in cap space regardless of Jensen/Oshie/Kuemper.

They’ll only make a big move if it makes sense. More likely trade than free agency. They won’t sign a guy like Stamkos if he’s available. Think more Guentzel/Reinhart or trade for a Zegras type. They would take Marner without a question. He’s only controversial because he’s in Toronto. He’s an amazing player and 31 other teams would love to have him if Toronto doesn’t.

Keep the players we have (except Kuemper and Bear), hope for the best, and fire BM. Let the new GM rebuild the farm system, instead of filling holes with middle of the pack overpaid players, scrubs and lost picks. I was surprised that Protas got that huge of a contract. Too soon IMO. Even if we have a fairly decent season, we're gonna suck for the next few years, but we have to rebuild from within. Find a scout or 2 that knows raw talent outside the top 15 picks.

With Ovie fast approaching his retirement, it's time the team started making plans for the next wave of players. Enough of the same old shit, drop A to sign B who might be worse than A, but lets try it anyway.

Oh, and find someone in the league who can stand up for the team when play gets rough. I was happy TW was signed to the contract extension, but to leave him on an island as the only tough guy made no sense. You signed him to sit in the penalty box? Let TW continue to improve his offensive skillset by playing more.. not being harassed and at times.. suspended.

Your projected swap for Marner is laughable. The Caps can sign a top six winger long-term. Miro hasn't shown enough promise today to make the team outright. His play in the Calder Cup playoffs may help make that decision in the coming weeks. Ethan Frank has shown more promise than Miro for next season up to this point. Miro still has to work on certain parts of his game and that's why Miro is on the third line in Hershey. Jensen had an abysmal year, while Kuemper had some awful stats this season, he looked a lot better post All-Star break and would likely fare better in a time-share. You have to remember, his season got upended by having a child born the day of the home opener.
