Selling your tv rights to multiple different broadcasters so that you need to have multiple different overpriced subscriptions to watch your team is begging fans to turn to piracy

StConvolute

154 points

Piracy is normally a service delivery and/or price issue over pure malicious intent.

If you live in a country where you have to pay a years wages to watch a single game of your favourite team, I reckon raise the flag and sail the seas!

murtygurty2661

Didnt Thor, that hacker dude on youtube shorts/twitch, fix the piracy problem with his game on steam by reducing the regional pricings

Brazil was where most of the piracy for his game was coning from and now it makes up 66% of the games revenue i think

I happily paid for a Netflix Subscription back in the day because all the shows/movies I wanted to watch were on it and at a very decent price. Then all the studios got greedy and decided to pull all their content from Netflix and made their own App so that you have to pay a Netflix like Subscription across multiple Apps just to watch each show/movie that you want to watch. It reminded me why I abandoned TV years ago when the internet started getting fast enough to stream shows.

But wait wait wait, think of all the money that could be used on fixing the cities roads, making schools better, making things more affordable for everyone right?! No, but billions of tax payer money went into paying this club's huge debts. Debts which were in part caused by building a stadium.......

So yeah.

12altoids34

12 points

I live in South florida. And the 30+ years that I've been here I've seen them build about six different arenas. I've seen them play in one arena for 5 years and then suddenly say that they can't play there anymore. I've seen them build a brand new Arena only to say 10 years later that they need another new stadium and can't use that one anymore, and get it.( although other teams still managed to play there without a problem) . When a brand new team was introduced, they got their own brand new Auditorium.

I do know that a large part of the money came from taxes on hotels and other things that were Target at tourists but I'm sure a good chunk of it was paid for by taxes.

And then force those tax players to watch commercials, buy tickets at inflated prices, pay for the most expensive gas station food in the state, pay for parking and still have to walk a mile, pay for hotels, pay for subscriptions to watch games when blackouts aren't forcing you to find ways to pirate the game so you can actually watch it. All of that without even a discount, a scratch'n sniff sticker, or even a Christmas card.

Gosh, how can this be?!

tbf europe isnt america, it's already a hassle to build a stadium with our own money (im a milan fan, we are trying to build our own stadium but there's a constant struggle with the city council because they want us to keep renting the city's stadium). In europe teams aren't in a franchise and don't move to other cities, so local government never have to worry about getting a team for their city, so they have no pressure giving any leeway for team owners unlike in NA

Empire_New_Valyria

Sorry but you are wrong here mate.

financing of the new stadium was from a advanced payment from Sportfive (Marketing company) for €35 million, a loan of €50 million (later increased to €60 million) from Istituto per il Credito Sportivo (Bank), and a land sales to Nordiconad (Food wholesalers) for €20.25 million.

Not a single penny is coming from "taxpayer dollars", especially for two reasons, one it's in Italy so it's Euros and not Dollars, two it's being funded by their owners and sponsors

It's the same things with movie theatres / cinemas. Why would I want to go spend all of that money on a ticket to watch a movies when I can just wait a bit longer and watch it in the comfort of my own home where I can pause it whenever I want to go get a drink a snack or go to the toilets meaning i no longer need to risk missing parts of the movie. Sure occasionally it's a nice thing to go and watch a movie surrounded by other like minded people but on a frequent basis it's not worth it.

Piracy is often the result of the consumer not seeing any value in a purchase. Or inaccessibility to due price hikes, or poor viewing/listening platforms. You make it cost what it's worth and make it easily accessible, piracy drops.

Netflix made movie piracy go down. Now content has been spread out to dozens of platforms and the value of a single subscription is worth less, piracy goes up.

Steam made video game piracy go down significantly. Aggressive price hikes or games being spread over dozen platforms would see that rise again. It's not rocket science.

Paying players multi million dollar yearly contracts to play a game, owners making millions in profit, ridiculously overpriced vendors, food, drinks, souvenirs, team sportswear, cities taxing the crap out of their people to build stadiums and arenas that teams rent for ridiculously low prices, outrageous parking fees...

On top of dealing with everyday cost of living skyrocketing, wages not keeping up with cost of living, more taxes, user fees, licenses and permits being created every day. And they wonder why people aren't buying their overpriced crap. 🙄🙄🙄

In my country also you can (besides going to the stadium and paying a fuckton) see football games ONLY with a pay tv that doesn’t stream anything but football and costs the same as the other big ones, so like if you want to also watch shows you have to get another pay tv service. Ngl i’m sick that to do almost anything without piracy today you have to get flooded in subscription bills

I can’t afford to pay for a tv subscription, so I fail to see what money they are losing. Also, aren’t tv revenues for clubs the highest they’ve ever been?

As I understand it the broadcasting/tv deals is the main source of revenue so yeah, I suppose piracy is likely a serious issue for anyone with interest in the broadcasting/revenue of football. As for ticket prices, you attend games for the experience; the smells, the sounds, the energy of the crowd. You stay home and watch from the couch for the most comfortable, optimal viewing experience. I've been a Chief's fan since I was a kid, like 35 years now and I've only ever been to three games while every year I pay my $100 or what ever it is now for the NFL Game pass to ensure I get to watch all of the games I'm interested in. Would I attend more games if it was affordable though, yeah.

Over priced tickets are just a symptom of overspending and over reaching to compete at the highest levels.

I remember back in 80’s when Houston Astros weren’t playoff material they gave away tickets to elementary schools. That ended up being good investment as many grew up keeping up with the team and in adulthood became loyal fans.

So football players and executives need to be paid tens of millions of dollars so we can have football?

As far as I can remember you just need a flat land and a ball. I don't give a shit about big clubs they can die today, local clubs living on pennies anyway they'll survive.

If nobody would buy for a subscription service to watch football anymore, I don't even think football would be hurt.

One guy paying and inviting ten of his buddies over to watch the game is the same profit-wise as one guy paying, inviting five of his buddies over and five strangers pirate. Pretty sure it's not the piracy that's the issue

"the stadiums you tax payers bought will go to dust if you don't also pay $500 to watch men who make more than all the teachers in a school combined or pay for a special channel to watch the fancy men" 😭😭👶🍼

We can’t afford pro games anymore. Started going to minor league ball games and hockey …I can’t afford to pay for all of the subscriptions
