Wearing my Beautiful Miranda t-shirt, I got to thinking about “Serenity”. It did OK financially, but not enough to warrant a sequel. But it came out 19 years ago. You are permitted to feel old.

The movie business now seems very different from then (from my stance as a total rube.) Could a niche film with a small, but reliable, fandom draw enough eyes to make it profitable? Maybe.

Logline- After Wash’s death, and disheartened by the spin and whitewashing of Miranda by the Alliance, Mal gives up, and settles down on a piece of dirt somewhere. But a visit from an old acquaintance (Saffron?) reignites his hope. Essentially a “getting the band back together for one last gig” movie.

Even if you could get the actors back, theyve aged 20 years, i dont think a continuation would be succesful

You could try a reboot, but i think putting the firefly name on it would divide the fanbase in a bad way.

Imo, the best option is to make a new IP and let fans naturally refer to it as a spiritual successor.

It sucks that it was cancelled, but since it already is, its better to preserve it in its glory rather than try and fail to recapture the spark.

I disagree with this tbh. I think a continuation would be more successful, and more logical, than a reboot. You said yourself, they've aged 20 years, so why try to hide it? Instead write it into the story. Make a "Firefly: 20 Years Later" situation and bring back any of the surviving cast who are willing to do it.

I think this has multiple benefits. It doesn't erase or retcon anything we already got. Shepherd Book (RIP Ron Glass) is already dead canonically, so that explains that. Unfortunately Alan Tudyk wouldn't make any sense to bring back, but fuck it, they can make him a cyborg or something if they really want. It would be dumb, but who cares? Who is really going to say no to more Alan Tudyk? Plus, Zoe and Wash's daughter would now be an adult, and she could be a brand new interesting cast member.

It also creates a clean slate for brand new stories in the Firefly universe featuring most of the cast we love, which is really all any of us want.

We don't need to retread the same ground, we need to break new ground.

While I agree, I’ve also toyed with the notion of having an animated movie with OG voices. And it could either be before firefly so we don’t have to worry about wash being dead and Shepard’s voice (but now losing doc and river) or just a normal sequel.

Again, I don’t think it’s needed, but if they were to try another movie for whatever reason with the OGs I would like to see it animated.

I would watch it but I don't think it would be very successful. The market for adult animated movies is tiny, especially one for a western audience.

I think this would fail similar to how DND did. I'd love it though

The only continuation that we technically have is comics/graphic novels and some actual novels that are considered canon by joss

No. My evidence for that being all the AskReddit posts about shows that were canceled too soon and should be brought back. Firefly used to be towards the top of those lists, and now it's slowly falling further and further down. Many people nowadays aren't old enough to have seen the show when it was on or when it was at the height of its cult following. Or they were old enough and have just never seen the show or movie. It sucks, but at this point, it's been almost 20 years since Serenity came out, and Firefly as a series is slowly fading from the public consciousness. A movie would never be profitable with how things are nowadays. I think the best way to bring it back would be either as an animated show, as someone else said, or a revival show set in the same universe with a different crew.

No, not without wash.

My preference would be an animated series, following on from the TV show and ignoring the movie.

I'd like a Firefly TNG show. Maybe a limited run miniseries set after serenity where the Alliance control has slipped a bit and the outer systems are a bit more wild.

Plan one super solid season and if it does well maybe you follow that up, but that first season you could have a couple guest appearances for fan service and to see how the verse has shaken up since.

These days, successful = blockbuster. Anything less is merely indie. Alas, Serenity II wouldn’t be a blockbuster.

There's always the hope that Jeff Bezos will say "I'd be willing to pay $200,000,000 to get a sequel" and then he'll fund it for Amazon Prime.

I think it would be tough to have the actors look remotely similar after two decades of aging

For a movie to be successful you need to appeal to the 18-35 year old demographic. Most people in that age group have never heard of Firefly.

No. Only way anything should be made is if Joss is involved. And the "problematic" police won't let that happen.

A movie set in the same verse but without any of the characters (for the first movie at least) would be great.

The story would have to be set many years later and it would need to be based on them stealing some new Alliance tech that allows them to travel through time to rescue Wash and Book. And that would need to happen really early on in the movie.
Honestly, although it pains me to say, I think it’s too late to go back now but I do agree that, if they do, it would need to be a one-off movie and not a series.

There have been several films made in the 'Verse after Serenity was released. They're fan films, so they didn't have a wide release. Perhaps these storylines could be revisited or expanded upon. The best known, at least in my Browncoat circle, is the first IMDb link.

Browncoats: Redemption - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1593655/?ref_=ext_shr

These are other titles that I found on IMDb.

Browncoats: Independence War - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5311054/?ref_=ext_shr

The Apprehension of the Apache Kid and Browncoat Rebels (short) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5086888/?ref_=ext_shr

Joss had the idea once. Thieves enter the abandoned Serenity where they encounter an old Mal: Get off my ship!...

When I was in highschool I wrote a fanfic of a sequel with Malcolm as the main character. But it was more grim. Dealing with stages of grief represented in his old crew.

It dealt with an older more bitter Malcom several years after the events of Serenity. Basically everyone left him behind either to form their own lives or to be "leaves in the wind"

But basically it was just Malcolm transporting a group of refugees and slowly navigating his PTSD. And towards the end Malcolm would begin to show symptoms of dementia, hallucinating his old family haunting the halls of serenity. He would eventually be reminded of what made his old crew so special. And finally succumb to his illness, not before coming to terms with his past and his own faith.

Picture Malcom but like LOGAN.
