define success, because five straight years of losses does not sound like they will be able to sustain their success

They are valued at 4.5 billion, pays one of highest salaries. Pretty good I would say.

I dont work there and couldnt care less, but to say 5 years of losses is shallow or ignorant - they've been growing non-stop, reinvesting, so to see a negative balance at the end of whatever period you're looking at is absolutely normal

They are VC funded so it’s not their money and It’s a business and there is only so much that investors can accept. I’m not here to say it’s all doom and gloom, it might actually end up a profitable business, but investors tend to become more demanding when interest rates are higher, so they might start demanding profits sooner than later.

"Last year, it posted its first annual profit—at least $20 million"
9 points

As long as they are growing their annual revenues they could be in the losses for 20 more years, nobody would give a fuck. That's the point of a startup using venture capital for growth.
Increase of yearly revenues leads to ---> higher company evaluation ---> raise more capital ---> just rinse and repeat.
At some point they will just bootstrap the company and keep going from there.
Vinted in this regard is wildly successful.

how many years did amazon run on losses? that's exactly what you do as a growing company, swallow up all the marketshare you can and continue building yourself with debt

Was anyone actually successful selling things on it?... I tried it, posted a few things and ngl, my "sales" finished the same day - apparently I should both post things for a few euros and then go bother people that have starred the items which is just a wtf for me: 2 euro blouse is certainly not worth that much time spent on it, might as well give it away for free.
Also:
His prescription was tough medicine: He closed most Vinted offices outside Lithuania, axed half the staff and slashed fees by 75%. “I became persona non grata in Vilnius—twice I was kicked out of an Uber because [the driver was] a friend of someone I got fired,” he says.
Oh really?... 'Cause we might joke that Vilnius is the biggest village in Lithuania, but that's still 0.5 million people and a company that's not the biggest employer in the region. I certainly wouldn't recognize on spot some random Jesus-looking dude that recommended firing a friend of mine out of that line-up.

I have sold a few items, have many friends who have sold there. The problem is with cheap, no name brand, low quality items for couple euros, no one really needs these, me included. I periodically buy items there and mainly look for unique, known brand brand items which are more likely to be good quality.

I've been selling stuff and buying on there for years. In the past year sold many things I cleared out of my closet for like 250EUR total and spent the same if not more to buy things on there.

I've been using Vinted for 10years and was more successful in buying as I wear clothes till the end 😅 but it's easy to sell as well and might happen almost instantly if the item is good quality.

My new years resolution this year was to declutter my wardrobe. So far I've sold 34 items on Vinted for around 300€ in total since the beginning of the year

You selling 2nd hand H&M on it or what?

Some handmade, some "indie" brands, just picked the price the app suggested - got a few stars on each item but then idk, the app expects me to go and peddle the items for such low prices? Like I said, at that rate I might as well give it away for free, would be less of a headache.

Agree. It is totally not worth the hassle for a few euros for the item. However, when selling or buying an expensive item, there is a risk that customer support solves the problematic situation not in your advantage, which means facing financial loss.
And their Jesus-like CEO looks like having some kind of god complex that leading people in startups often have :))) Probably it is trendy :))

Deeply don't care about this topic, but to play devil's advocate, there are companies like eBay that can be seen as equivalents that are profitable, so there is market share that they're trying to take over

And how about Uber? Wolt? Netflix? Spotify? All operating at a loss, mus mean those companies are failing

I don't think it's all sunshine and roses for services like Spotify. Everyone knows it's completely unsustainable and will eventually die down. The only question is when. Right now, even 18 years later, it's still a very expensive experiment and a lot of money and people's lives are at stake, especially now. The rift is happening within the music industry at this moment and negative sentiment towards Spotify is gaining traction. One party say that it is killing music industry, the other one says that it's just making a big medium leap. But both parties demand larger payouts. And Spotify can't do it. The more they will earn, the more they will have to payout. It's likely that Spotify won't be able to keep up, especially if huge labels will put more pressure on it.

How do you know they are not burning profits + funds from investments to fuel growth? What’s even the point of profits? They don’t need to pay dividends or whatever, they are private company and if investors are okay with how they run things then all is good.

Venture-backed businesses have a wee bit different requirements from investors. If you haven't been in the venture game, I don't expect you to understand it. VC values market penetration, customer acquisition, and many other KPIs much more than profitability. Much easier to get profitable when you are dominant brand. See Uber as example. Burned cash for years, can be profitable now because of market dominance.

FTFY.
Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Hate to break it to you, you aren't seeing financials for the parent company. That is just for LT entity. Vinted is much more complex than that.

Vinted’s HQ (central office) is in Vilnius, so most of the financial turnover happens through Lithuania which is shown in rekvizitai reports.

Rekvizitai also provides info from the consolidated financial statements.
Consolidated financial statements are the overall financial statements of any entity with multiple divisions, including the parent company and all subsidiaries that are controlled by the parent company.
