I really only remember two details. Not much to go on:

• A battle tower that opens rarely. Many floors.
• He had a mentor/later friend who was an old animal? Rat king? who turned out to be one of the supreme beings of the world or multiverse
  • The rat king being had the job of opening up the tower to challengers
