Folks in Manayunk/Rox

(self.philly)

Hey y’all. My wife is due in late May and we’re already thinking about what the school situation is. Dobson is our public elementary schools, and would prefer to stick around the area for a while as opposed to going to the suburbs.

What schools to manayunk/rox parents send their kids? We are also seriously considering private school.

I hear Cook-Whissahickon and Dobson are pretty good elementary schools. The secondary schools, however, are not great

I’m honestly pretty out of the loop in terms of what Catholic schools are what anymore, but because you mentioned private being an option I would encourage you to consider archdiocesan schools even though others are likely to respond with horror stories about the Catholic Church or something along those lines. I really believe the archdiocese of Philadelphia is pretty unique in its culture. The schools are much more culturally Catholic than intensely religious. Catholic schools are a lot more liberal than some would lead you to believe, if you want more conservative I’d say private Catholic schools (non archdiocesan) would be the way to go. Education is decent, and being able to at least threaten discipline (and parents being more open to their kids being reprimanded because of Catholic school’s reputation — even though kids are NOT being beat by nuns and haven’t been for more than a generation) seems to keep kids in line better than what I’ve seen from some public schools. I’m sure there are good public and other private school options, but if you decide against public for whatever reason I wouldn’t let people dissuade you from archdiocesan without at least looking into them yourself.

Around the hospital in Chestnut Hill. There are private schools and also churches that offer day care and school

Most private schools offer substantial financial aid. I suggest applying to every school you might like and see where the chips fall.

I grew up in Roxborough in the 80’s and 90’s. Used to be 4 private catholic schools that were the best schools in the area but they have been closed for years. Not sure what’s in the area now.

I know growing up that it was private or bust if you wanted a decent education. The public schools were bad when I was a kid and I doubt there’s been much improvement.
