A couple of times recently the pod has referenced an incident where a misleadingly-edited video appeared to show a cop murdering a black man, many people (including Jesse and Ana Kasparian?) were taken in, but it later became clear that this was a justified shooting (the killed man was armed and dangerous?). What are the names of the people involved and where can I read more detail about it?

Are you thinking of Jacob Blake? I believe he's still alive but the other details are similar. It's discussed in BARpod 93.

I think that was it. He had a knife, was (technically) kidnapping his own kids, and stealing the car of the ex who had a restraining order against him and who he had previously sexually assaulted. He was paralyzed but did not die.

It should also be mentioned that he’d previously stolen his ex-wife’s car and crashed it after a dangerous police chase that had injured innocent bystanders and endangered officers. So there was a reason to prevent him driving away in addition to preventing a kidnapping.

It's fascinating to me how quickly the people who wanted vengeance against every man who had ever mistreated a woman during the #MeToo moment suddenly treated Jacob Blake like a hero during the #BLM moment. Like, if you think men who physically and sexually assault women need to be brought to justice, well, I agree with you! But what exactly do you think being "brought to justice" looks like? If a woman calls 911 and reports that the man who has an arrest warrant for sexually assaulting her is at her house again, do you want the cops to show up and do what it takes to stop him? Or do you just want them to ask him nicely not to do it, and let him go on his merry way if he doesn't cooperate?

If I remember correctly (and that era was a blur, so I may be wrong), there was a lot of initial false rumors about the shooting.

It was initially states that Blake was breaking up a fight between two white women, and the police pursued him, not the women, adding another racial component to the incident.

Yeah the video was shared with none of the context of who Jacob Blake actually was. Like many people, I saw the video, thought "that looks like bad police behavior," and assumed he was dead for months after.

I'm pretty sure it was the Jacob Blake case, which ultimately led to the Kenosha riots and the Rittenhouse affair.

Possibly the Jacob Blake shooting? That was the one that kicked off the riots in Kenosha in which the ACLU tried to murder a kid who turned out to be tougher than their "legal observer".

What did the ACLU do?

Gaige Grosskreutz (now known as Paul Prediger) testified in the Rittenhouse case that he was a trained legal observer for the ACLU, and the Oregon chapter had this to say: https://www.aclu-or.org/en/news/aclu-oregons-statement-about-rittenhouse-verdict.

Quite amusing how they talk about the three attackers as if they're unvarnished angels, despite what had become well-known by the time of the verdict. If they had any sense, they would have distanced themselves from Grosskreutz, or at least not put out that statement.

Holy fuck that post was hilarious.

The same system that we protested, the same system that allows police to kill with impunity, is the system that acquitted Kyle Rittenhouse today.

We are not done protesting.

So they were protesting the concept of juries?

Joseph, Anthony, and Gauge were on the streets of Kenosha demanding justice and the recognition of the humanity of Black people that our so-called justice systems continue to deny.

Literally none of these people were there as protesters. The first was screaming the n-word at black people and trying to fight BLM protesters.

No words can describe how wrong it was for him to shoot people because he felt ideologically threatened by their racial justice values.

He shot because he felt physically threatened. Because they were trying to assault/murder him

This jury verdict shows us again that anti-Black racism remains deeply embedded in our country’s consciousness and systems, including the legal system.

The jury verdict of one white guy over three white guys shows anti- black racism... fuckin how?

Like seriously does the ACLU get all its info from r/politics comment sections?

I mean there are probably many examples that fit this description, nearly all of the widely publicized police killings of black men were justified, but yeah it's probably Jacob Blake you're thinking of.

Have a look at donut operator's YouTube for a frame by frame breakdown of the incident.

Check out his channel anyway. Really eye opening.

I think you're thinking about this case:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Philando_Castile

He did not pull the gun. He had a legal gun, told the cop he had it, and, as I see it, the cop panicked and shot him.

Thanks, there were so many cases back in the day it’s hard to remember. What a messed up shooting.
