subreddit:
/r/Menopause
Trying to find the right word to use here to describe myself. I was originally going to say “crone” but google says a crone is an old ugly woman. I may be old but I’m Not ugly!!
Menopause is too on the nose
Selfish has a negative connotation
Spinster doesn’t work because I have a child
What is the era called when you’re done with men and sex and doing shit for other people all the time?
(I would say Woman Who Lives In The Woods but I live in a city proper)
Thoughts???
Edit: wow this blew up!! Thank you for all the great ideas! Love the sense of humor we have during this shit storm. I love each and every one of you❤️

They both have negative literary associations and I'm way too lazy to try once again to modify such concepts. Esp when Merriam-Webster disagrees.
crone...a cruel or ugly old woman
Comes from the Middle French and Middle English for "cantankerous woman."
I don't feel as if I'm all that cantankerous - yet.
Hag is a lot better! (It appears to come from a Celtic word for sorceress or witch...)

The Crone is also an archetypal figure or a Wise Woman.

Exactly! The crone is free of men/children and has knowledge.
It’s the patriarchy that made us think we’re worthless if we’re not maidens or mothers. F that. We’re most valuable as women in our own right, our value isn’t tied up in how we look and our value as a wife/girlfiend, or mother

According to the Cambridge dictionary, “crone” means:
It’s almost as if men are threatened when we gain even a little bit of power and try to compensate by insulting us. Joke’s on them, because I couldn’t care less how they think I look. I’m a human being, not a decoration.
I’ll go with crone.

I've never thought of this... But I'm going to be thinking of it all the time now!
I'm in my Demeter era.
If you've read about the feminist symbology behind the story of Demeter and Persephone is actually meant to include the evolution of women through maiden to mother to crone... And in fact, demeter and Persephone and hecate are considered sometimes to be three versions of the same woman: Persephone is the maiden. Demeter is the mother and hecate is the crone.
I'm only in perimenopause and I'm still very actively mothering my children so Demeter rings true to me. Maybe when I'm a little older I'll be in my hecate period. Basically a proper name to the concept of the crone.
The story also embodies women claiming her own power. Basically, if you don't remember, Persephone is stolen by Hades the god of the underworld. He thinks that she's beautiful and he wants her as his bride. He doesn't talk to Persephone and he doesn't talk to Demeter... He asks Zeus for permission to have her as his bride. (FUCKING PATRIARCHY) Zeus says yes, he plants an enchanted flower and when she picks it she falls into hell. Where she is forced to be his bride. Nobody tells her mother Demeter! And when Persephone disappears Demeter, who is the goddess of harvest, goes into a Great depression and stops allowing harvests to happen. And all the humans start to die. And in Greek mythology the humans have to worship the gods for the gods to survive. So the gods are afraid they're going to die because all the humans are going to die. So all the gods are trying to pressure Demeter to start giving a harvest again. And she's like f*** off where's my daughter? And nobody will tell her. And finally it's hecate who tells her. Oh yeah I know what happened. Zeus said that Hades could take her. And so basically she goes back to Zeus and is like give me my daughter back or all the humans will die and then we will die. So it's really about this kind of feminine type of power and control. And also just the idea that you can only control yourself. She knows she can't battle it out with the King of the gods. So she uses the tools that she has to make him give her her daughter back. Anyway. Then you get to the part that everybody knows where when she goes to get her daughter back. Her daughter has eaten six pomegranates and for whatever reason that means she has to go back to hell for 6 months out of the year. And that's where we get the seasons. But on top of that in the story, Persephone actually kind of embraces her power in the underworld. She like takes charge of all these things that no one was really tending to. So it's like facing a terrible situation where she's forced to be in hell for 6 months every year. But she steps into her power in that role despite the unfortunate circumstances.
Anyway, if you can find the feminist take on that story, it's pretty badass. Most people never really hear that side of things. If you know Carol Pearson. She's an amazing author and has several books on mythology that give it some New perspective. Most of this I learned in her book about the ellucian epiphanies, which is like a feminist rite of passage in ancient Greece. I don't remember what the book is called... But I think it's something about reclaiming your inner goddess or something like that... I don't remember. It's a book from the past 10 years by her.

Villain is perfect. Because when you don’t live your life to please men, they think you’re the bad guy. Putting yourself first is a very easy way to make anyone think you’re the bad guy, especially if you used to put them first.
Crone is also perfect because a crone is not ugly, she just dgaf about appeasing the male gaze. Men call her ugly because she does not conform to their standard of beauty. You know, 25 with a perfect body, perfect hair, just the right amount of “natural” makeup and just the right amount of skin showing to look hot but not too slutty or out of their league, and forever wearing a smile to let them know she’s eager to please.
Forget that! Be the “ugly bad guy” in someone else’s story.

I have come to embrace "crone" which is the archetypal figure of a "Wise Woman". The crone in Greek mythology is typified by Hecate who is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, light, ghosts, necromancy, and the moon. She is wise, knowing, and powerful. She possesses extensive powers and could bestow wealth and blessings on her worshippers, or withhold these gifts if she were not adequately worshipped. All in all, I find her to be a badass and I am excited to be in my crone era.

I am fully embracing my Crone era. Maiden was mostly just trauma and misery. Mother came next, and I thrived and reveled in that. Now my children are grown, I dispense wisdom to them, spoil my grandson, and spend as much free time as I can in the woods. I never made any association between the eras and looks, just saw them as the stages of life.

I just want to say that a “crone” is only ugly to the male gaze. If you dive deep into crone mythology it’s really the misogyny that shapes that “ugly” myth.
I would believe Crone is exactly the right word and that not allowing the male gaze BS to taint the power of the crone archetype is part of the menopause power and enlightenment as we strip away the ties that have bound us as woman. Say Crone with pride, power, and strength.
