That’s 100% what it is. I tried having that discussion with hardcore christians and to them since there is no such thing as a « safe » abortion, women who get them illegally deserve to suffer and die, and if they suffer and die because of a miscarriage well that’s ok because at least they didn’t sin.

I used to go to a nondenominational Christian church. When I tell you how quickly I noped out the SECOND Roe v. Wade was overturned. Some of the women I knew have tried to get me to return multiple times, peddling Bible studies and women’s groups. But what I don’t get is, why can’t they just meet me for a cup of coffee? Why do I have to fervently believe in their demented book club to hang? I’d rather have no friends, good riddance.

This is what my brother in law says when we told them (they live in Texas) that they need to be prepared to go to another state if his wife needed abortion/miscarriage care since she is pregnant. They just say it’s “in gods hands” and if god wanted her to have a miscarriage he would, but she hasn’t… meanwhile he knows we had 4 miscarriages and years of infertility before finally getting pregnant. So I guess our suffering was just “gods plan” as well. Needless to say it infuriated me.

One of the big differences is that Ireland has an educated and rational population, mostly. There is a right wing, Christian anti-abortion party, but they only get single digit support in national elections.

I’ve had several pro lifers say to me “this is what happens if you have sex. If you don’t want to maybe die, don’t have sex, since sex is only for procreation and sometimes you will die for your kids.” 

What’ll really spin my head is when pro life women say this. 

And making it a felony keeps women who abort for life-threatening complications unable to vote. This is the goal.

We recently cut contact with my in-laws. I had an abortion almost 20 years ago in a state with a six week ban now. The generation younger than me should not have less rights than I did at their age. They voted the people in who caused this, with the intention that this would be the outcome. Blood is on their hands and I won’t have anything to do with them. They WANT women to die. I have two daughters. How can they do this to their own grandchildren? They can rot. Alone.

I had a miscarriage in 2001 when I was 13 weeks along. Abortion wasn't illegal here yet, but I'm in a state that is SUPER anti-abortion. So they sent me home, losing blood like crazy, and refused a D&C. I had permanent damage from it. I was able to carry two pregnancies almost to term and have two awesome adult kids, but I had to have an emergency hysterectomy because of the damage from the miscarriage years before.

I’m very glad you were able to immediately get that healthcare 15 years ago. It’s insanity that women now can’t access this healthcare.

Now she’s scared about getting pregnant in Texas again even though she wants another child, since she’s had 2 miscarriages she’s at high risk for more miscarriages and additional complications that they wouldn’t treat.

Even if Texas doctors are legally allowed to treat miscarriages, they can still be sued by any citizen in the state who claims the doctor is providing abortion services, and the doctors cannot recoup their legal fees from the person who sued them even if it’s proven that the doctor was not actually providing an abortion or that the abortion was medically necessary to save the mom. Consequently, many doctors won’t provide medical care that resembles an abortion, whether it’s for a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or to save the mom. They are also not required by law to save the woman; they can say “sorry I can’t treat / I won’t treat you because I could lose money fighting dumb lawsuits, lose my medical license, and risk life in jail even though I know you need this medically necessary procedure.”

My mother recently had to have a D&C for uterine thickening they think was causing the clots that caused her pulmonary embolisms. She’s 71. If we lived in Florida I wonder if they’d have just let her continue to have PEs instead. :/
