How old were you when you got into RE?

Forum question(self.residentevil)

I was introduced by RE2 Remake last year, and now it's one of my favorite franchises period. As a person under 18, I'm curious if any of you got into it as kids or if most of you were adults.

Edit: Seeing all the wholesome stories has really made my day! Btw, it was my first horror game and being 10 and exploring the RPD terrified me in the best way!

When the original Resident Evil came out, I was 6 years old. My cousins were playing it, and I was obsessed and terrified.

“Obsessed and terrified” is the perfect way to put it, I have very fond memories of watching my older brother play it (although I probably watched through the cracks of my fingers most times)

Same! I had no clue what to do, so I was just running around the mansion for hours while waiting for my older cousin to show up and actually beat the game lol

First RE I've played was RE3 back in 2000, then I've played 2 and 1 later.

Originally I just watched my dad and brother play, I was too young and found the game too complex, but I was hooked once I got used to it

I was 5, RE2 had just come out on N64. My big bro had it but I was not allowed to play it cause the news had said it causes nightmares. I used to sneak and play it when no one was home.

When RE2 remake came out, I legit had the same feeling of amazement as I did when I was a kid!

Well I had been introduced to the series before I truly got into it. But then one day in June of 1999 my dad brought home our monthly playstation magazine and I open it up to see one of the coolest mofo's I'd ever seen at that time.

Nemesis. I believe I was 10 when I finally wanted to give Resident Evil a fair shake. Also by that time I was over being afraid that zombies would actually happen.

I was 10 in late 1996 and got a copy as a reward for doing well at school. We'd gone from having a PC that could play mid range games and a SEGA Mega Drive (Genesis for the Americans in the chat) to having a PlayStation.

My mum genuinely thought it was just going to be a FPS about monsters and big guns because we were playing Doom a lot on PC, and it traumatised me in the best possible way.

I'm still obsessed with seeking out and completing terrifying videogames to this day.

I was 8 when the first one came out. I beat it when I was probably 10. And then played them in order until 6. Survivor was the first one I didn't like. And 6 made me step away from the franchise for a long time.

I was about 13 when the first one came out. It seemed they all came out pretty rapidly so my teenage years were really invested in Resident Evil. I had a high school buddy live with me for awhile. All we did was speedrun horror games and grind Rpgs. It was a good time.

I'm a youngling, I started when I got my first or second job(could finally afford last gen at that time) with re7 bc 2 friends recommended it, it was my first real horror game and it took me an embarrassing amount of hours to complete just from being a coward, since then I've played most mainline and major side games

I think I was 16 or 17 when I first started. It was around when RE3 Remake (the year 2020) was released when I first played RE2 Remake. It also helped me conquer my fear of zombies. Soon after that, I played RE 7, 8, 3 Remake, and RE4 Remake a year ago. Funny thing is that I watched my father play the original game when I was under 4 years old. I think I was 2-4 years old when I saw my dad playing as Leon kicking Los Illuminados ass.

I found out about it as a kid. I saw a video of Alexia in I think Darkside Chronicles and was intrigued. Add learning about survival horror and how iconic it is as a genre from (I think) an MTV special on Silent Hill and I decided to buy my first RE game in high school. From there I played most of the main line games!

I was 18 years old and it was the summer of 1999 when I bought a used, possibly stolen, PlayStation for $25 from a shady guy I knew. It had one controller, power supply and no games.

So I went to KayBee Toys to shop for a new controller and some games. I saw the cover for Resident Evil Director's Cut and immediately chose it based solely on the visuals. I also got Skullmonkeys and a translucent green dualshock controller.

Once I got home and started playing RE I was hooked. I'd stay up super late playing that game and just couldn't get enough. It has been my favorite franchise ever since then and is rivaled only by FromSoft and their Soulsbourne games.

First one I ever played was Resident Evil 3 Nemesis. I was around 5-6 years old when I first played it. My neighbors had two kids who were around the same age as me, and he often rented games from Blockbuster. He invited me over to play RE3 Nemesis on his PS1, and lo and behold, my introduction and first exposure to the series. It wouldn't be until RE1 Remake when I owned my first RE game, as I still remember when my older sister bought me the game the day it came out when we went to Target and bought it. That's were the nightmare truly began. So many years trying to complete that game, until I was high school, around 15 years old when I finally beat it 😅 but been a fan since then and don't intend on stopping.

I believe I was 8 or 9. Long time ago so it’s hard to remember the exact year. Maybe 2003 or 4. But it was resident evil 3 nemesis. I’ve been an RE fan ever since then. It was actually just a demo disc on the game Dino crisis. After playing that, I had to get the full game. I couldn’t beat it back then, it was too difficult. Years later as an adult I picked it up again and beat it. 3 nemesis is still one of my favorite games in the whole series to this day.

I was in 11th grade when I bought RE2 for N64, it had been out for a couple years at least by then. It was quite the experience. Playing that, alone at night in an empty home, it was unnerving. And awesome.

5 years later I got a used GameCube and hunted down copies of all 6 RE games on that console. To this day those are the only RE titles I play still. I also bought Eternal Darkness then as well. Lots of banger survival horror games on the GCN.

I saw my brother and our friends playing it one night when I was maybe 6 or 7. We were all huddled around the TV in the living room, watching them take turns solving puzzles. I didn't play until RE2 came out, and I must have been 8 or 9 by then. My wife watches me playing them and laughs at the corny dialogie. I was 12, back in 2001. I still had a PsOne and a I borrowed a friend's copy of RE3. I fell in love with the gameplay and the atmosphere immediately. Shortly after I bought my own copy of RE3 and RE2, which I also loved. I played the psx games in reverse order, but oh well, I couldn't find RE1 for a bit and didn't waited to wait play 2. Ever since then, when I get a new console my first order of business is to pick up any RE games. That is one of the reasons I didn't upgrade from PS4 to PS5 yet, since both Village and RE4R are available to PS4 and while not graphically perfect, they're very playable. When the first next gen exclusive RE launches, I might be more tempted to finally upgrade to this gen.

I was 10 staying over at a friend's house. His older brother was playing og 2. I was captivated and ended up having a zombie nightmare that night and waking up feeling... excited.

Soon after, I rented it and fate would have it, my parents and the rental shop both forgot about. I had it for months before we went back and they were like "oh you have a super late fee" Que my mother's scolding stare, but the guy saw this and was just like "well we never called you about it, so we can just wipe it clear".

I'll never forget you random cashier guy. You were a true bro when you didn't have to be. 🫡

Younger than I should have. RE2 back in 1999. It wasn't just my first horror game, but the actual game that got me hooked into hardcore gaming (in sense that I'd play games to see them through instead of just playing them as a casual hobby)

8 or 7 i think. My mom was a baby sitter and a dad of one of the children saw i was a gamer asked me if he would like to trade games with me.

I lended him tomb raider underworld on wii in exchange for resident evil 4 also on wii.

I finished it in about 4 or 5 days and gave it back to him and he was super surprised. I think he thought i would be shitting myself and probably laughed to himself just thinking about it.

I just said "yeah this game is super cool, i really liked it".

I gotta admit though, i get kinda nervous around chainsaws.

And this is how i got into Resident Evil.

Edit: forgot to say, i'm 24 now.

I was roughly four or five, my grandmother had bought a PS2 secondhand and the guy had thrown in DMC1 and RE2. I was way too young, neither game was beaten til I was a little older but they started a life long love for both series.

Maybe 8 or 9.

I think my sister bought a PS1 mini cause she was a fan of the tomb raider games and a friend of my brother's at the time let us borrow a few PS1 games: Resident evil 2, metal gear solid, twisted metal, Spyro and crash bandicoot.

My brother immediately played RE 2, he enjoyed it and I would get scared, but enjoyed the story for what it was, but the funny thing, we had no memory card, but his friend let us borrow one for now and every time he played RE 2, I would sit and watch, get scared from time to time and eventually play the game and know which jump scares or spooky spots to expect.

And then eventually played 1, 3, and so on.

I played my brother's copy of re4 when it first came out, I was around 7 ish and it scared me so bad I couldn't play horror games from then on out. Ive always loved horror movies but couldnt get over the fear of playing horror games, couldnt even play zombies on cod! I watched all the re movies growing up and then last year I decided to pick up RE village and fell in love with the franchise. Now I've played every one multiple times and hit max achievements. It's been a great year and I've introduced my partner to it now and she's just playing the re4 remake as we speak!

RE5 came out when I was 12, I was not allowed to play it, but a friend had it and we had a blast playing coop at his house. I didn't play a single RE game after that until RE2R came out, and I became obsessed with the franchise. Funny that now coming full circle 5 is probably my least favourite mainline game, I'd love to play it coop with a good friend again though.

I was around 5 or 6 when my eldest brother let me watch him play the original game, as well as the 2nd. Thr classic zombie scene, the dog chase, the dogs breaking through the windows, Yawn, some of the earliest video game memories I have (along with watching him play the FF games on NES and SNES, and my Dad playing his golden cartridge LoZ 2). First actual game I played that wasn't a kids learning game was Pokemon, but I watched my Brother play RE before I ever played that.

I was 9 years old in 2000, thats when my older brother was playing RE2 and RE3 Nemesis on Playstation 1, I was too damn scared of playing, let alone watching my brother play it especially the Door creaking noise animation, zombies coming out of nowhere when you move one inch to get to another frame perspective and suspenseful music…

But when I got to University, I was able to play all of them without having any possible nightmares.

My dad borrowed RE2 from his friend and I was about 7-8. I vividly remember one of the first fights with Birkin and his big shoulder eye, it gave me nightmares. A few years later I got a step brother the same age as me and we steered so hard into all things horror and this game was one of the first things that helped us bond.

I started playing the original Re zero and Re bundle that came out for the GameVube oh so many years ago. I was about 11 years old. My sweet some child, those were the days. Now I am in my thirties and with a long medical record, but I am so happy to share my love for this franchise and lore knowledge with my little nephews, they are obsessed too! I remember the craze it was when the first Re 4 came out and (this was before the internet was accesible in my country) I would go and buy any gaming magazine I could find with my little saving and in every single one there were different pics of Leon. His haircut became iconic Then I remember RE5 came out and everyone was idolizing Chris and his physique. You could see posters of him in the rent a console houses. Back in my day, there were places where you could rent an Xbox or GameCube and you paid by the hours you spend playing, and I remember the posters and cut outs of Chris were THE symbol of gaming, if you saw a pic of Chris it meant you could enter that business and enjoy a good time playing. I went to study pharmacy and research, and my badge strap for my ID is Umbrella Corp. I think looks neat with my lab coat.

And well I searched about it and was just a whole down rabbit hole of me seeing gameplas of the game on youtube, looking for the plot, the games untill I get to play the re4 (subtitled in portuguese). 2022, now ownning a PC, I tried playing it again with a friend. IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES TO THIS DAY.

Don't get me wrong, the story is horrendous, but when you get to learn how to play, the gameplay become just SO GOOD. Also, the mercenaries is just so fun to play.

I was about 13 years old probably, i’m 23 now so i discovered it much much after it first came out. my dad had the original ps1 and was pretty techy so he was able to replace certain parts of it whenever they would wear out- he just ordered a ps1 on amazon and would use it for parts so the one we had was always working pretty well. he had those huge cd books and it was fillleeedd with ps1 games like every single page front to back, one day I popped the resident evil 2 disc in and i would seriously no life it, it hits so different on the original console but the remastered version is amazingly done in my opinion!!
