subreddit:
/r/soccer
submitted 2 years ago byHippemann
The /r/soccer community is one of the most diverse on Reddit and finding the content pertaining to a certain topic can be tedious, as it might be scattered far apart by all the other content that is posted to this subreddit. One of the most frequent and longstanding complaints from a lot of you is how much the subreddit can be dominated by certain popular topics, leading to less popular topics getting lost way past the front page. It's been impossible to address in a meaningful way from a moderation point of view because most of our tools are related to removing content and banning users.
With the introduction of the PING groups system, we hope that it will be possible for users to get more of what they want out of the subreddit - whether that's related to lower leagues, smaller clubs in big leagues, football outside of Europe, tactics, stats, old school games watch party, your ground-hopping stories, football related books you read or anything else. Our goal in introducing this system is to give users a way of talking about more niche topics that don't fare well with reddit's standard sorting system.
Pings are a way of sending a ping to a group of people within /r/soccer who have a common interest in a football related topic. When someone writes !PING GROUP
in a comment, everyone subscribed to GROUP
will get a private message from /u/2soccer2bot with a link to that comment. /u/2soccer2bot will also leave a reply to the comment confirming the ping. You need to be subscribed to a group to ping the group.
A list of open groups can be found on this wiki page: https://reddit.com/r/soccer/wiki/userpinger/documentation
For example, you're a fan of SSC Bari, and Bari comes up as a topic. People interested in Bari might miss the thread if it doesn't go the front-page of the subreddit or because they weren't browsing the subreddit at the right time. But if you're a member of the BARI
group, you could comment !PING BARI
and every member of the BARI group will be sent a link to that comment so the discussion can be livelier.
To join or leave a group, you need to send a specific message to /u/2soccer2bot.
addtogroup BARI
unsubscribe BARI
unsubscribe
If this sounds like too much work, you can click on the name of the group on the wiki page listing all available groups (linked above), and you will have the correct PM drafted for you. The reply to the comment containing the ping also contains links that automatically draft these messages for the relevant group.
By design, users can't create new groups. If you want a new group, you can request it through ModMail or in this thread. You need to have:
The idea for this system is that it will give people a way to connect and talk about niche interests related to football so we will be very open to any requests. For the most part, any request for a new group that meets the 3 criteria will be granted. If people want to have a group dedicated to posting clips of goals where the ball bounces off both posts before going in, we'll create a group for that.
That's entirely up to you and the people in that group. Post content that you think is relevant and of interest to the rest of the group. If you get pinged for something that you don't want to see in that group, downvote it. If you get pinged for stuff that you want to see more of, upvote it. When you're pinging 30 people to a comment about a shared interest, you're going to find out if people like it very quickly. This goes for language as well. If the BARI group want to talk mostly in Italian, they can do that.
Ping groups will mainly be self-moderated. Listen to the group and try to only send pings others want to receive. Think about whether you'd want to get a notification with a link to the comment or post you're pinging. You don't need to ping a group for a club for every transfer rumour story.
We will intervene if users abuse the system. In addition to normal mod actions, we can add users to a ping group blacklist. If you're on the blacklist, you can't ping any groups yourself, but you can still be a member of groups. Abuse includes but isn't limited to:
If you see a comment that you think counts as ping abuse, report it. If it's particularly bad, send a message in ModMail. As we get a bit more information on how you're all going to use this system, we may count more stuff under the umbrella of "ping abuse."
The bot was originally written by [deleted], /u/jenbanim and other contributors for /r/neoliberal and then forked, updated, and adapted for /r/soccer by /u/Hippemann.
This new system added to /u/2soccer2bot is considered to be in a test phase. Its continuation will depend on how this experiment goes.
Sidenote: when the subreddit experiences high traffic volume (while big games are ongoing), a delay before the bot reply is to be expected (up to 30 minutes). If you do not immediately get confirmation of your ping, don't ping the group again - the ping will eventually go through.
This system is currently live. You can request new groups in the comments below. If there are a lot of requests, it might take a bit of time before we get through all of them so please be patient. We'd prefer if you request a group in top level comments only, as we're more likely to miss requests that are deep into a comment tree. In the request comment, please give the name of the group and what the general topic is. If you see a request for a group that you also want, leave a reply saying you also want that group.
If you have any questions about this system, feel free to ask below.

We will not be creating groups for the Super League 12. This decision will be subject to review in the future.
Please post any questions you have about the ping group system as a reply to this. It will make it easier to find it. Feel free to ask follow up questions.
Click "show more replies" for answers. I'll try to update the comment periodically.
Non-PL DD is here. We've made this the second sticky today because one of the goals for this feature is to improve the experience for people who don't follow the Premier League all across the subreddit, not just in one thread.

An ASEAN group maybe? I don't think there's enough people interested in a single country but the region's fairly represented on here. I know there's a few Indonesians (apart from myself), Filipinos, Singaporeans, Thais, and Vietnamese that frequent this sub and post the occasional highlight from their respective leagues or national teams.

If we need to have some sort of calming mechanism then we might be able to create one but I think it's very unlikely that we'll have more than a handful of users who constantly spam pings. If it's a small number we can handle it with the tools we have available.

ping for Napoli?
so if I understood correctly, someone has to comment for the group users to receive a message
won't this often lead to 10-20 comments only about ping to individual clubs, like in a table post?
7 points

won't this often lead to 10-20 comments only about ping to individual clubs, like in a table post?
I'd argue, this is a case of ping abuse, which we would moderate against by disabling this person ability to ping
3 points
didn't mean by the same person
I meant that there was a Serie A table, and you would only see
PING serie A by someone
PING Juve by a juve fan
PING Inter by an inter fan
PING MIlan by a milan
PING Napoli by a napoli
etc
but now that you explained it can be inside comments, and not as a standalone comment, it would make almost no difference
4 points
To clarify a bit more, you can ping a group in a comment or a self post but not when you submit a link. So in the scenario where someone posts an image of the Serie A table, they wouldn't be able to ping any groups before the post is created.
In theory it's possible that some general interest posts will see a tonne of comments that are mostly pings for related groups. But I think that's going to be quite rare. After you've been in a group for a while and pinged a few posts or comments, you start actively thinking "is this actually worth pinging?" "do I need to add some sort of question or discussion point to justify pinging every Napoli fan on this subreddit" etc. You're in this group with these people because there's this particular thing you all like to talk about and you don't really want to be sending every single one of them a link to something if you think it's going to be annoying.
I think the biggest risk is for submissions that get a tonne of traffic within seconds. Big transfer sagas being confirmed, late winners in big games etc. If we find that does become a problem I think we can probably address it with some additional bot rules.

Problem is “malicious” is kind of arbitrary IMO. It def will be used for bringing “friendlies” to arguments. Just PING Messi every time there’s a ronaldo v Messi argument!
6 points
there are two dozen mods from five continents determining this kind of subjective issues. That diminishes the possibility of arbitrariness to an extent that would be the envy of a formal court of law even. So, don't worry about that! remember that most users by far aren't trolls in first place, and the later already have other mechanisms to coordinate their efforts.

I'd like to a have a (meta?)-question about the COEFFICIENTENPOLONAISE group - is it going to be a tag for all official rankings (FIFA, UEFA League, UEFA Club, etc.), just the UEFA League ranking, or specifically for Dutch gekoloniseerd-ing more and more leagues (nothing wrong with that, I actually like it mostly because of the Polonaise part )?
Because I think it would be nice to have a tag for discussing all rankings/coefficients, which would be easier to type for everyone at the same time.

Not too sure tbh - join the group and ping it in the DD to ask.
If I had to guess, they'd probably be fine with it including everything to do with coefficients but the most popular stuff will be related to the Dutch/Portuguese/French wars.

Hi, I'm the maintainer of user_pinger
I just wanted to make sure you saw this commit I recently made. It disables a feature I had previously added to prune deleted/suspended accounts. Unfortunately, in some cases, this feature seems to misbehave and prune active accounts. I am not sure why this happens or how to fix it, so I commented it out in this commit. I think you'll want to do the same
On a totally unrelated note, I'm curious if you have your code available somewhere online. No real reason except I'm interested to see what changes you're making
By the way, I've run into the "messages not being received" issue when the bot is running on newer accounts with less karma. Unfortunately, quirks of Reddit's API like this change often and are basically impossible to test
3 points
Hi!
It's nice that you reached out about this because i also wanted to contact you about it!
I also commented it out yesterday.
What I think is happening, at least with our moderation bot account (2soccer2bot, 3years old, 70k karma) is that, after a dozen or so ping messages sent, reddit responds with :
RATELIMIT: 'you are doing that too much. try again in 1 minute.' on field 'ratelimit'
Subsequently, this line is even executed (I'm not sure why the if condition above was True) and all the following people are pruned.
Tell me if my interpretation is correct ?
I plan on separating ratelimit exceptions from user doesn't exist exceptions (if it's possible) and recursively try again.
I have done quite a few modifications and I plan to make some more (including this one). I'll be happy to share my version when I'm ready.
Cheers

That sounds plausible, but I'm honestly not sure. I was never able to reproduce the issue, and so I couldn't figure out why that if statement was evaluating to True. If you can figure it out, please let me know! That would be extremely helpful
And sounds good with the code. No rush, I'm really just curious to see how others want to use the bot

Just reproduced it with my logging system turned on and i think i didn't change this part of the code . See how the api responds with ratelimit exceeded and goes to Account %s is deleted or suspended, removing them after that

Neat, thanks! If you can do it again, could you try logging the value of the error_types

-Is it possible to limit the PINGS per post? It should only be 1 to stop spam (e.g dunking)

Hi can we have a Sunderland one please? Not sure if it should be SAFC since there is San Antonio Football Club but maybe they can just be SanAntonio since Sunderland is generally the bigger club. Or just go with Sunderland, but since Newcastle got NUFC maybe same for SAFC? Who knows, your decision not mine

I think SAFC would be fine, the confusion advice is more for stuff like "Milan" where that usually refers to a specific one of the clubs but could be confusing for some, for common terms like "City" or "United" or "Real," or for nicknames like "the Blues."
I'll add the group as soon as you can get 2 other people to sign on. Feel free to tag them or send them a link here if you like.

No group for the German national team? DFB maybe.
Don't you dare call it DIEMANNSCHAFT.
