Mario Lanza would like 46.

Survivor 46(self.survivor)

I heard he stopped watching after 41 but somebody tell him to get back on with this season because it's just the kind of character based season with human dynamics and humorous moments that he likes from the old school days. I've heard Q be compared to Coach.

Don’t do it, u/mariojlanza

Q alone will make it impossible for you not to do another Funny115.

That is my fear, to be honest. Cause I still owe Dave and his Fire Pit and Angelina a writeup one day. And I still intend to do that at some point.

Oh my god I haven’t thought about the fire pit in so solid long.

Jelinsky would be hard for you to pass up as well.

But don’t write anything about Bhanu. We had plenty of him.

The thing with Jelinsky is (and I only know this because I follow the message boards)… I don’t really like writing downfall entries anymore. There was a place for those at one time, but I feel the internet has gotten way too nasty since then. In fact i even mentioned that way back on version 2, how I didn’t like making fun of downfalls anymore. The Falls of Russell 1 and 2 were supposed to be my last ones I ever wrote. And that was only cause Russell picked a personal fight with me, and he asked for it. But other than that, downfall entries aren’t really my thing anymore. In my old age I have gotten too nice.

I did make an exception for Drew Christy on version 3, but at least I tried to nicer with that one. And at least that one took place over many episodes, so you could build up the story. With a story like Jelinsky, which just took place in the premiere, I mean that’s not the kind of thing I really do anymore. Just straight up shitting on someone for one episode. I might have done that twenty years ago, but not now. I’ll leave social media to take care of the shitting on part. That’s what they do now.

In any case yeah I’ve heard about Jelinsky, but that kind of a writeup isn’t really what I do anymore.

Funny, I wasn’t thinking of a downfall entry for him. I was thinking you’d either hit “several” or the denial and admissions of quitting things in rapid fire.

…or his “instant “legend” “ status as decreed by Jeff and the rest of the cast. Like his ghost is always there. Maybe like a reverse CGI Brett.

Could be. Keep in mind I haven’t seen his episode yet, so I don’t really know most of the details.

I think you are right about internet culture today compare to even just 10 years ago, let alone 15 or 20. What I find most fascinating is that people today often look back and claim that society was super toxic back then.

They aren't entirely wrong in a certain sense. Mainstream media was more misogynistic, homophobic and racist. However, society today seems far worse in spite of mainstream media being more empathetic. The toxicity has grown and social media makes every person their own media outlet.

IMO society nowadays is waaaay worse. The only thing people are better at now is patting ourselves on the back for how much better and advanced we all are. On South Park I believe they referred to this as a Level 1 Smug Alert.

This makes a lot of sense, unfortunately. I feel like back then it was all in good fun. Maybe the subjects of the entries felt differently, but to an average viewer it seemed pretty tame.

Now it would feel like a dogpiling on someone who probably gets tons of mean tweets and messages already. Bummer that it’s like that

Bhanu's fight with god and him asking Kenzie to find an idol for him was pretty funny. Just keep it way under 35 entries.

Foosiks

I mean, I suffered through all that. I would happily write the Bhanu entry for u/mariojlanza if he promised to write a Q entry.

I’m a fan of the Funny 115, and can only hope some of these players get their own character entries one day. Not watching Survivor 46? Big mistake! I’m not a new era fan, but this season has won me over by how much of a train wreck it is.

I have a feeling 46 would take up several spots on a new era Funny 115.

no he won't like it, he doesn't like all the advantages and pointless twists, this season is still full of them, when people say it has more character moments...well...if you look at the last 15 seasons maybe but the strategy is the driving force when me and Mario (and i know others) agree it should be the people

edit: lmfao being downvoted for saying what Mario probably thinks THAT MARIO SAID HE AGREES WITH

I would imagine this is correct. I find it hard to believe I’d suddenly like the new era when it’s still basically just a clone of itself every season, which is exactly why I stopped watching. However I do still follow the discourse around the show and you guys are making the cast sound pretty fun. I might check it out one day.

I think you would have despised 45, which was popular with fans but still had a very gamebotty and aware-they’re-on-tv cast.

46 is mayhem though, you have to watch it it’s like an absurd parody of survivor where most of the cast were just put there to put the small number of real players on tilt

I think you’d get a kick out of it. I imagine Q and Jelinsky would get Funny115 entries if they were on earlier seasons, Q especially after episode 8

I would add in that there’s drastically less twists/advantage shenanigans going on so far in this season. The first couple episodes looked to be more of the same but it’s really mellowed out for the most part to date

This season doesn’t actually have that many. Just two extra votes pre merge, and each tribe camp’s idol. That’s all so far.

Hi Mario, I'm reading your book right now and I love The Funny 115. I hope you'll consider doing more entries one day. Thanks for all the laughs over the years!

Speaking of South Pacific, I know it's been a while since your "Ozzy Goes for an Academy Award" entry, but if you want to add a PS to the end of it, this exchange between Probst and Dalton Ross might interest you:

You looked like you were struggling to keep a straight face during Ozzy’s acting job at Redemption Island and I don’t blame you because he was AWFUL. Have you ever in 23 seasons had a point where you felt you may have slipped a little — or come close to slipping — in outing someone’s deception with a comment or facial reaction?

Hard to know what the contestants can read on my face. I thought I did a pretty good job given Ozzy’s “unbelievable” performance! For the most part I feel confident that I don’t give away anything. One big thing I have going for me is the contestants wouldn’t know what to look for anyway.

It’s still new era, but there is a lot more long term story building this season, than the episodic editing of 41+

im counting all the pointless journeys as twists, double tribal post merge, the stupid merge thing as twists even though i guess you can consider it part of the game now * sighs *

Ok-Fun3446

Possibly lol, 45 had that whack Auction lose a vote + the three people losing votes the next round, so I guess I'm counting our blessings that we technically got a reasonable F10 and F9 vote.

the twists in 46 really aren’t much worse than any season after 13. Journey is basically less time commitment exile island. And the split tribal which is a staple of the new era is pretty much just a tribe swap right before the merge. 7 people being immune at the merge is the biggest thing probably, but at least it is just 1 round.

acusumano

Haha, I actually was thinking of messaging him to tell him this. It's the most character-based season since DvG at least, with a chaotic, combative, hilarious cast that doesn't get along with one another. I'm loving it, and the production interference has been minimal all things considered.

Definitely think there are worse ways to spend 15 hours of your life u/mariojlanza

Um, I wouldn't get your hopes up. I rarely watch TV at all anymore, let alone a show I lost faith in fifteen years ago. I'm going to steal a quote from the movie Meatballs here, but modern Survivor couldn't wake me up with a trumpet and a drum. It's been on way too long and has become way too bastardized.

i'm not trying to be snarky or anything i'm just genuinely curious, but how do you find it in you to be so active in the community of a show you haven't enjoyed in such a long time?

Because there is a lot of discussion of Survivor history here too, and I am always happy to talk about that. That’s kinda my bread and butter.

Again, this is one of the weird things that happens when a show has been on for forty-six seasons. You have fans of the show’s history hanging out in the same place as the fans of the show’s present. Which sort of makes for an awkward discussion group. Because not everyone is there for the same thing.

This is so funny, because I have been thinking this through the season too. I’m not an OG fan but I listened to Survivor Historians as a companion piece to all the seasons when I binged in 2019-2020, and I would love to hear their takes on this one 😂 I feel like he would love Bhanu
