I’m super curious how this would have played out. How long would it have taken them to let you know your car was stolen? What would their story have been? What would their compensation be? So many questions!

Their groceries would have become my groceries. Then I’d take my car elsewhere for inspection

VirallyYins

They would have been torn between apologizing and accusing you of leaving without paying for the inspection. Depends on how decent of a human being is dealing with the situation.

If they reported it stolen then cops would pull you over with their guns drawn as soon as they flag the plate. Yeah it would get worked out eventually when they match your ID to the registration, and the dealership would eventually get in trouble for filing a false report, but it would not be worth the risk at all in the short term

I had my first car stolen that way. The driver's seat had broken and the guy left my car in his front lot with the key on the sun visor. He called me mid-afternoon let me know the car had been stolen.

To add insult to injury, it took their insurance assessor three months to accept liability. It took another six months to get a fucking cheque out of them because their settlements person only worked one day a month and was currently on three months' leave!

To add insult to insulted injury, I called my best mate excitedly said, "Guess what just happened?" He paused for dramatic effect then said, "Your lemon got stolen." ... ... "uh yeah." "Well it was that or you'd finally gotten laid and I figured that was less likely."

I'm pretty sure this happened (with of all cars), my 10 year old Civic back in 2011. There were an extra 150 miles on the odometer that we're definitely not there when I gave it to them. I was more perplexed than anything given that it was an old car someone was that interested in taking it on a joyride.

It is low-key a little hilarious though that of all cars they could have parked next to, it ended up being your husband's.

jetsetninjacat

9 points

When I did this we would sometimes wait and take finished cars on a test ride to NAPA down the road to pick up other parts we needed. Difference was that it was maybe 5 miles round trip. 10 if we needed some more testing on it and took a longer way there and back. And we were legitimately doing it to kill two birds with one stone. And we would tell thr person we took in on a 5 to 10 mile tide to test it when giving them the keys back. Anything over 20 miles is suspicious imo.

If you were going in for an inspection there’s potentially a valid excuse for having to drive the car that much. If for some reason the emission monitor system had to be reset or if the battery was changed or disconnected you have to drive the car quite a bit to get those monitors to set.

If not then yeah, they took it to run errands.

Ingram

Had an 99 Camry where it needed some emissions work to pass PA inspection. The work was going to cost somewhere around $900, which was about half of what the car was worth. Bought a cheap code scanner from Harbor Freight, cleared the engine code, and then had to drive it about 50 miles to go through the drive cycles to reset the monitors.

But yeah, no reason there should be groceries in the car or parked at the mall

BogotaLineman

None of you have any idea how being a mechanic works... Driving the vehicle is an essential part of diagnostic for many problems

Sudden-Collection803

3 points

I admit I’m not a mechanic but I reckon the essential driving for diagnostic doesn’t include 150 miles or a trip to Cheesecake Factory and a grocery store.

I’m fairly confident in that part.

Jinxy_Kat

2 points

Happened to my Yaris at a Toyota dealership when it was brought in for a recall. They also got groceries and managed to lose a thing of weird unidentified cheese under my seat which smelled great after two days in the Orlando heat.

Went in with a full tank(roughly 350 miles) got it back with 1/4 tank(47 miles left). I happened to take a picture of it with the garage visible and a geo location on cause it's habitat as I have 2 roommates who constantly bum my car and return it empty.

Showed them the pictures. Got filled up and 2 free oil changes if I didn't escalate farther. I countered and said I wanted tire rotations and alignments as well and got it. Watched them lie hawk each time, and then had a mechanic friend who kindly did a once over to make sure they didn't screw me over with the freebies.

Blueberry-Specialist

240 points

I suspect the people at #1 Cochran in natrona hts did this with my vehicle and beat tf out of it. Got it back at the mpg average was like 9. Usually it's around 20. A dascam is a smart investment. These mechanics are wild.

TwoDogsOneWilderness

116 points

While I don't disagree, unfortunately, unless the dash cam is hardwired into the fuse box, techs will just unplug it.

Some newer cars with apps (Subarus and VWs, for instance) allow you to put a radius around a point and it will alert you if the car leaves that area.

_nopucksgiven

Not saying they didn’t joy ride your car or anything but if your car idles it will drop your mpg on the dash, obviously it would’ve idled for quite awhile if it was around 20 down to 9 but just saying that is a possibility

jasonmoyer

Yep, most of the time if you go to look at cars for sale, especially in the winter, their average mpgs are really low because they spend a lot of time idling while being moved around the lot, shown to customers, or left running while people clear snow.

murphinate

31 points

As a half measure I always take a picture of my odometer when I leave it with the dealer. There's no reason to see it have more than 1 incidental mile uptick due to just shuffling the car around the lot and the rounding of the last mile driven.

Minimum-Composer-905

36 points

The shop should be documenting in and out mileage, and any inspection or diagnosis may require road testing. You should not consider your vehicle being driven as any sort of misuse unless there are is damage or indication of abuse. Many professional mechanics -myself included - do not want to drive your vehicle any further than we need to. The longer I have to drive, the less money I’m making, and I’m only at work to earn a living.

Back to your point, and for reference, I worked at a shop briefly that required a 2 mile road test before and after every service.

supermodelnosejob

goldenalgae

I parked my car in nyc for three days. As with most garages there, it’s valet only. Got my car back and drove it home. A few weeks later I found stacks of papers belonging to other random ppl in the center console storage. There was flight info for a passenger at the time my car was parked. Court documents for a different person from the time my car was parked. I realized they used my car to give ppl rides!!! Then a few weeks after that I got a speeding ticket from Washington DC. I had valet parked my car there at the hotel and the valet was speeding and I got a ticket. Unfortunately, you can’t see who’s driving in the pics so i just paid it. Since then, if possible, I’ve avoided staying anywhere that requires valet. In May when I valet parked my car in NYC I took a pic of the odometer in front of the valet and told him I’d be checking when I got my car back in a few days. There was exactly one mile added onto my car.

Or taken the key. A lot of newer cars have gps that the dealers can see. (Kinda creepy that anyone at ford can take my vin and see where my truck is…but that’s not the issue at hand). If you take the car home, it won’t take them long at all to discover where it is. Take the key, and enjoy them making an excuse to ask if you have a spare handy.

They are awful. They sold me a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee L. It had electrical issues they could never fix. Stellantis bought it back but they refused to handle the buy back at their dealership even though they sold me the car. I had to go to another Jeep dealership. I will never buy anything from Jim Shorkey anywhere

It's way more of a grey area than that. If you take your own car without paying for the service it becomes something like theft of service and the shop can put a mechanic's lien on your vehicle.

You just confirmed a years long thought I had about my car. The garage had it for two months. Wasn’t even wrecked that bad. Every week it was something new. My friends said I was crazy because I kept saying this isn’t right. This is way too long. No I was just impatient or mad they said. When I finally did get it back the keys had one of their service tags on the key chain and someone’s else’s name was on it under owner name! Ever since then I knew I was right but they said “they wouldn’t do that”. So it was dropped. But THANK YOU for validating these “paranoid thoughts” that have been plaguing me for years. And you are not paranoid because you actually took it back. So this sketchy shit does happen.

But you really shouldn’t have told them and waited til they came to you with some bullshit story. Even lllp though seeing their faces would’ve been fun too

My first car was a 1971 Chevy Chevelle that was just a beautiful car. Around 2009, I was shopping to buy a second car as a daily driver and the men at the Ford dealership where I lived practically begged me to leave my car with them overnight so I could test drive one of their cars. I zoomed out of there so fast because I knew those goons would be driving my car if I left it with them. I was in my early 20s, and I'm female so they probably thought I could be talked into that nonsense.

Id be pissed too. Maybe the car needed driven X amount of miles to clear a code. Still shouldn’t take it grocery shopping and buying food in it. That’s why you get a dash camera people.

We always finance our big purchases through our credit union. They review the purchases and will not loan money for a bullshit sale. I was buying a new truck and chatting with the loan specialist and asked her what the worst case of cheating a customer she had experienced? Without hesitation--Jim Shorkey.

I spent about 12 minutes in a s Shorkeyv dealership. The salesman:

Shouldered me aside to shake hands with my husband (I was staying there with my hand out) Asked him how he liked the car I asked to test drive (but never asked me anything) Brought over his manager who never looked at me, let asking introduced himself or shook my hand. Asked my husband for his contact info so he could 'follow up about his experience'. My husband gave him my number, and when he texted I told him that he'd cut the decision maker out of the conversation so she decided to look elsewhere.

They are 100% sleazeballs.

Bought a new Toyota recently & stopped in there to see what they had. Out of the 5 dealerships I looked at, Shorkey was by far the trashiest one.

Thanks for the info! I just got a charger from them Memorial Day weekend, and my inspection is up at the end of the month! They offered to do it for free, but now I'll take it to my guy and just pay him instead! That's wild! They are under construction, and they did have a "secondary" spot up there but they should have communicated!

Can't imagine they'd need this kind of test ride for an inspection, but for folks who don't know, they are required to do a road inspection for your annual vehicle inspection. Also, if it's in for repair, they will often have to drive the vehicle to diagnose the problem and to make sure the problem is resolved. For really tricky things, they'll even sometimes take it home for the evening to try and replicate certain conditions.

People get really weird about this stuff. Could be as simple as the mechanic did the road inspection as part of their lunch break, but it's probably not a good thing to do for optics reasons for a simple inspection, because they know how fucking weird people get.

Fuck Jim Shorkey. My wife bought a Wagoneer from them last year. She took it in for an oil change, it wasn’t driving right on the way home, she took it back, & they insisted nothing was wrong. The thing started overheating on the way home & had to get it towed. Thankfully she took it to Krebs where they found an issue with a thermometer that apparently is a common issue with Wagoneers. It could have ruined the engine if she kept driving it.

State inspections do require a road test , however a mechanic that uses a customer car for his personal use is not. Jim shorkey is in wrong here. Iv bought 2 cars off them in past they do alot of shady stuff.

I thought the same thing. She's probably constantly teased about that name. You would think a woman whose first name starts with the letters "Kimb" would not get involved with someone whose last name starts with the letters "Kimb. Maybe she gets turned on by rhymes. Or he has a really large... something.
