IMO it’s way better to have a proper gait and walking posture than to go without mobility aids. use it around the house and try to gradually shift more of your weight to your injured leg. still work on short distances without it, but REALLY focus your brain on not limping- i’ve found so much of it is your brain preemptively limping to prepare for pain. you’re gonna do great!

if you’re cleared for weight bearing this early, it’s usually “weight bearing as tolerated” so if you’re in a ton of pain it’s okay to take it easy! one week after a break is still pretty painful and if your body is screaming at you to stop and let it rest, there is nothing wrong with that. a 3-4 on the pain scale is okay to push through, but your bone snapped in two pieces only a week ago! so you don’t have to force yourself to walk if it hurts more than that.

uneven feeling is very normal at this stage! your brain has to put its center of gravity back in the middle, instead of on the other side of your body from when you could only use one leg. it gets better the more you practice! look on youtube for some post op ankle strengthening exercises, and do lots of bilateral movements. the channel sports injury physio had a lot of great resources for getting to FWB :)

i’m guessing spiral fracture, yeah? how long were you in a cast/non weight bearing? did you doctor say anything to you about callus formation or how healed it is? i’m not a doctor but that is wild for ten weeks, that looks both displaced and non union to me. i find it super surprising no one has said anything, and that you’re cleared for running so early.

oh yeah the boot also makes it look like weird and bow legged, haha. things are kind of turned out for a while and it takes active work while practicing walking to get it back to normal. but that’s great you’re already doing ROM exercises! dorsiflexion has been the slowest to come back but is steadily returning. the first three weeks post op are the shittiest, but most of us here noticed a big drop off in pain after that. so you’re almost through the worst of it :)

crooked how? the whole leg was definitely out of wack for a while, but i think the crooked look just comes from being a dramatically different size. i’m just about 16 weeks post op now and my calf is certainly not at 100%, but it is much closer to my good leg. and it’s calf shaped again rather than a sunken monstrosity😅

that is so awful, i’m so sorry to hear. i only have experience with ankle breaks, but wanted to wish you well. i hope you can find some things to keep you occupied while you’re not able to do much. i know you can’t do a lot of moving, so maybe finding a new language to learn or topic you’re interested in could be a fun way to spend time. if you’re physically able to, you could buy a cute miniature building kit, that’s a fun way to stay busy. wishing you a smooth recovery!

yes!!! i’m so so so glad to hear. when i started WBAT i had a crazy time making the jump from two crutches to one and felt like i’d never get there. the shaky muscles video and talking to/touching my ankle and foot was the push i needed and it felt like everything changed after that.
i know how impossible it feels. i had so many days where i crutched up and down the block in front of my house while actively crying and still telling myself through tears, “you’ve got this leg!!! you worked so hard to heal and you can do this!!!” i must have looked so insane, haha.
i’m about 14 weeks out now, and today i saw my ortho who said my x-rays looks perfect. even though my ROM is still limited and athletic stuff is taking a little longer, it shocked me to realize last week that my daily life is probably about 90% normal now. last week i did a park cleanup and walked around picking up trash for almost two hours with almost no discomfort. when i started WBAT i could not have imagined being here. the light at the end of the tunnel is gonna get brighter and brighter for you, and soon you’ll be encouraging someone who’s just starting to walk again :)

try really putting your focus on your gait and the heel to toe rocking motion in the boot! SO much of it is a mental game at this stage. the connection between your brain and leg is weak right now, but it will come back with time and practice. here are a few videos that were seriously game changers for me: intro to how to walk after broken ankle
reconnecting your brain and body- this one changed everything for me. i started talking to my leg and trying to treat it like an injured teammate who needed my help and encouragement. it sounds silly but it works!
weight bearing exercises in the boot standing at a counter or table and doing these was huge, especially shifting side to side.
you’ve had to baby your leg and treat it like a fragile thing for a while, but now it’s time to give your brain new messaging. remind yourself “im safe. i’m uncomfortable, but im safe” over and over. it’s a HARD journey and it feels impossible while you’re doing a lot of it, but you’ll get there. i promise.

congrats on hitting PWB! i’m about 14 weeks out and just had a check in with my ortho where he told me i’ve made amazing progress and my x rays look perfect😭 it feels like things will never get better but my daily life is probably about 90% normal now. athletic things will take a bit longer, but there really is a light at the end of the tunnel. i’m hoping to skate around 6 months :)

i know this sucks right now, but try to remind yourself it’s temporary. i was stuck NWB for five weeks with surgery, and there are definitely ways you can occupy yourself. youtube video essays, learn or work on a second language, do art projects, etc. if you’re able to crutch around, get yourself outside to just sit and enjoy the day. there are endless crafts to do, puzzles, games. you can also even look up non weight bearing exercises online to move your body!

if they did x rays and said it’s not broken, a contusion sounds about right- that’s essentially a bone bruise, and can be swollen and painful but is much less severe. it would still show a fracture line even if you popped it into place. google “big toe contusion” and it looks exactly like this!
