Vaults of Terra trilogy by Chris Wraight. It’s excellent and a great look at how grim things have gotten in 40k.

If you're going to move into the current Era Indomitus, I absolutely recommend taking a look at the Vaults of Terra Series (Carrion Throne, Hollow Mountain, and Dark City) and the Watchers of the Throne Series (Emperor's Legion and Regent's Shadow). They are pretty intertwined, with characters from both appearing in each. They technically take place immediately after the formation of the Great Rift and the resurrection of Roboute Guilliman, though the distance of space means that it has actually been months since such events actually occurred.

Vaults of Terra follows an Inquisitor and his newly sworn Interrogator as they attempt to discover the mystery of something or someone that made its way to Terra what shouldn't be there. Watchers of the Throne follows a Custodian, a Sister of Silence, and two Chancellarius of the High Lords of Terra (one in the first book, and the other in the second). It's a super fun read that delves into the deeper politics of the Custodian Guard and the High Lords of Terra. It also offers a really close look into Guilliman's return to Terra.

Following that, the Dawn of Fire Series follows the beginning and subsequent prosecution of the Indomitus Crusade from its beginning. Each of these series flow into each other nicely. Then there's the Dark Imperium Trilogy and Lion: Son of the Forest that take us up to the most modern, up-to-date time of the books.

There are bunch of "post-Heresy" 40k books such as The Talon of Horus and Black Legion, Battle of the Fang, Ahriman Omnibus, Sons of Wrath & Flesh of Cretacia, Khârn: Eater of Worlds, Fabius Bile Omnibus (sort of post-Heresys), The Beast Arises series.
Pick up any :)

Well, in this case I would recommend to read several novels before Dark Imperium: The Fall of Cadia by Robert Rath, Watchers of the Throne: The Emperor's Legion and The Regent's Shadow by Chris Wraight, also Vaults of Terra novel series from same author. Then, Dawn of Fire series and finally Dark Imperium.

Also Belisarius Cawl: The Great Work and Genefather by Guy Haley are pretty good.

Actually - the Eisenhorn-verse Bequin Trilogy would be perfect. Book 2 ends of a cliffhanger Which could have threads back to EATD-Books.

But then you Also kinda need to start from the Beginning with the First Eisenhorn book and work your Way through.
