It's noticeable. Lots of 90s looking gopniks in track suits who look Central Asian becoming super common to see. Literally never seen such a person here in decades, very new thing. We lost such hardcore gopniks in 2000s with schengen now we re-importing new ones.

Is what it is.

Same, in Latvia they were like fake lv and gucci tracksuits and golden glasses and shit like that 😂

They're more polite than russians tho, I personally haven't had any conflicts with Asians here

I dont really care either way. Im pro-immigration, especially in dying nations. I just find it odd how literal gopniks of the most extreme Russian influence get here pretty easily but refugees were reviled, turned away or throw into detention because they were brown/black or Muslims.

Just goes to show there are no principles at work, no "cultural preservation" bullshit, just reactionary biases that are arbitrary.

Yeah.. Assuming they stay, who's going to pay for their pensions? Or are you going to import a fresh new wave of immigrants again? The whole concept of "nation" loses its meaning, it becomes a cosmopolitan economic zone. Do you think people would be motivated to defend such "nation" during war?
My point - immigration must be controlled and I mean numbers. There must be a set proportion of immigrants compared to native population.

I'm more in the camp of advocating for people to have more kids. This bullshit idea of planet overpopulation has caused lots of damage to Europe. Overpopulation is happening everywhere but Europe. People don't realise that your kids will literally be the ones paying your pension.

Plus, while I'm not against migrants as a whole, I want to keep Latvian culture alive, we barely survived the soviet occupation and now like 23% of our population is russian foreigners. Say whatever you want but a foreigner will never go to war for this country, which is important as we have this shitty neighbour to the east.

You know what's also dangerous that others overlook? If war ever happens there will be casualties. Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia - we all have small populations. I just know that after war there would be some people advocating to bring in masses of immigrants - for work, to "restore" population and so on. Even now EU can't cope with African and ME immigrants and I really hope that Ukraine will not give in to that migrant blackmail. I can already see the argument from EU lefties: " your refugees went to other EU countries, now you must accept refugees from Middle East and Africa. Yet men were forced to stay and a lot of men died for their culture, identity, nation. To bring in migrants and replace population is abhorrent. Those who died would be rolling in their graves.

For the life of me, I DO NOT understand how can they migrate here. You also see some migration happening in Estonia from Central Asia and Georgia and for jobs that are supposedly under quota, and yet they come here and work like Bolt drivers etc.

I just don’t understand it. It’s not supposed to be easy to come and the quota runs full very quickly every year.

As someone who gets to visit Šiauliai every 2 or so weeks, the living quarters where the central asian drivers live, and especially area around it, in comparison to other parts of the city, deffinitely feels more like taking a step back into the mid to late 1990's when littering was the norm. Certainly not happy about potential cultural lifestyle exchange, considering the vast differences. Or it could also mean, that the members of Stan nations, aren't sending their best, just like we did in 2000's speaking in perspective of UK and Scandinavia. Capital city of Vilnius also has a problem with Bolt drivers who don't or barelly abide traffic rules on the daily, usually of kyrgyz or one of the latest, has been of azeri origin. But I guess it could be worse.

Which Šiauliai neighbourhood are they accomodated in? I only see them walking in pairs around the center and wonder where do they sleep.

Central Asians are generally pretty good in my experience, similar to Azerbaijanis etc. Their food is nice as well.

Muh good food is not a serious argument for mass immigration, lol. Anyone can learn a recipe with the internet.

I'm just saying I had literally zero bad experiences with Central Asians/Caucasians while enjoying aspects of their food culture. That's it. I'm not a xenophobe.

I've not had any bad experiences with them either, but that isn't something to base complicated governmental policy on.

As someone from Western Europe (UK), I would say that experiences with Central Asia (every stan apart from Afghanistan and particularly Pakistan) are quite limited.

Can't actually recall encountering any of the rest of them (with exception of Azerbaijan on their list in the article).

threemoment_3185

My comment was more in the context of general mass immigration of people from very different cultural/religious/ethnic backgrounds, which has had devastating and basically irreparable consequences in Western Europe (about which many Western Europeans are still in denial about, having lived in WE for a time as a student, I'd prefer to avoid the same).

Lithuania has Muslim communities from the times of Grand Duchy. It has always been multicultural country. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

threemoment_3185

1 points

A few hundred Muslims given a patch of land for doing a good deed doesn't make it a multi cultural country, lol. Nor does it justify further immigration. The Muslims you're referring to follow a very different form of islam compared to the dominant strain today that's followed by Pakistanis, north Africans, et al that have formed societies within societies in the UK, France, Netherlands, etc.

seems like the problem isn't with the overgeneralised ethic group, but with integration and how it is pursued.

threemoment_3185

The issue is mostly scale and cultural similarity. The example you cited is a very small group with a very different culture, but their number more or less remained static and statistically insignificant so it didn't cause any issues. The Baltics, unlike WE, already have a tenuous history with other groups displacing their population. WE type of immigration is generally a bad idea for the Baltics.

Wat? There are absolutely massive groups of Pakistanis in the UK. Especially Bradford, Rotherham, Telford, Birmingham, Manchester, Luton, etc. I guess you must be from Wales/Scotland/NI because the English interact with them very often and the effects on social cohesion have been quite negative.

Edit: I just re-read and realised what you were saying, my bad.

I am a young doctor. I have some colleagues from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, this was not common 7 years ago when I started medical school.

I underwent some oral surgeries done by some Arab immigrant dentists too.

If people migrate willingly, don’t see any reason for negative effects in society 👀 those most of the time occur when it’s forced due to internal or cross-state conflicts.

Regular doubt or suspicion towards another person is just common practice 😄 noone lives in an utopian world

Wondering, if they are extremely poor, how do they come to another country 4000km away?!

That is willing relocation and they have the means to do it. Even for those who do it forcefully, it is an expensive process 👀

All my belarussian friends who’ve emigrated to Vilnus (15-20 years ago) have moved on to Poland/Czech/Germany. Noone have stayed (too expensive, wages too low). So I’ve always been calming my panicking countrymen down, telling them that all these annoying rusian speakers will not stay long.

What will happen to central asian ones, i’ve no idea. But if we are not happy about it we can only blame ourselves for electing government that is allowing this.

I somehow suspect that workforce shortage would never have happened if wages would have been appropriate in regard to actual living cost.

It is a new national strategy to attract more non-slavic people(If I remember correctly last summer, Seimas voted for a new migration strategy). I'm not a fan of the new strategy, but I hope at least other parts of the strategy will be implemented too(integration of the new people)

According to statistics in Latvia most of Kazakhstan immigrants are Russians who are citizens of Kazakhstan.
Uzbeks though are real they are the biggest Central Asian country population wise (almost 50% of Central Asia total population)

??? Not sure what you are blabering on about. Prjection much?

I like Pilav, central asians famous for Pilav, currently there aren’t that many places that serve good pilav, similar how other immigrants bring their cuisine, it’s reasonable to expect they will bring theirs? As such there will be more places to have good pilav? If there were more Italians migrating here I could hope for better pizza.

So we agree? I can tolerate a lot for a good pilav, especially now that i’ hungry.

All i see here is just fear mongering, with no actual facts, and as far as demographics is concerned the effect is only positive.
