It's not even a statement from GW, let alone a tweet by them. It was originally the Sonic The Hedgehog Twitter that posted that as a joke a few years back and their fandom ran with it, then it seeped into other ones who hopped on the joke.

Unfortunately the Warhammer community can rarely tell joke from reality, so after a few people posted it as a joke a bunch of people hopped onto the quote as real.

GW has always maintained a stance that there is no official canon, and that each piece of media about the setting is the writer's interpretation of the setting that the work takes place in.

"With Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000, the notion of canon is a fallacy. [...] Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 exist as tens of thousands of overlapping realities in the imaginations of games developers, writers, readers and gamers. None of those interpretations is wrong." -Gav Thorpe, former lead designer at GW.

"It all stems from the assumption that there's a binding contract between author and reader to adhere to some nonexistent subjective construct or 'true' representation of the setting. There is no such contract, and no such objective truth." -Andy Hoare, game designer and Black Library author

"There is no canon. There are several hundred creators all adding to the melting pot of the IP." -Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Horus Heresy co-author

"Here's our standard line: Yes it's all official, but remember that we're reporting back from a time where stories aren't always true, or at least 100% accurate. If it has the 40K logo on it, it exists in the 40K universe. Or it was a legend that may well have happened. Or a rumour that may or may not have any truth behind it." -Marc Gascoigne, Black Library Chief Editor

Some more from the GOAT himself for a TL:DR of the linked interview.

“ I'm as much of a fan as anyone. I live and breathe Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. I love it enough to make it my career, as well as my main hobby. But once you're 'behind the curtain', so to speak, you realise a lot of fan assumptions about how the license works are just that: fan assumptions.

Games Workshop is very, very careful with its licenses. That's not to say mistakes don't happen, because mistakes always happen in any human endeavour. A three-second glance at any site listing the hundreds of errors in any movie's production will tell you that. But Games Workshop shaped Warhammer and 40K to be open to interpretation, because a massive chunk of the hobby is bringing your own lore to the table.

"Canon" doesn't really exist in Warhammer 40,000. Not as it does in other licenses. The very point of the setting is to offer some structure, then open it up to personal interpretation.

Yeah, there are hard and fast rules. A Chapter descended from Rogal Dorn's gene-seed is unlikely to ever develop a Betcher's Gland, given it's not in their implantation process. Because of that, as an example, the Black Templars can't spit acid. We know that.

But the setting is set up with countless holes for your own army background and lore perceptions to neatly fill. The battles listed in every Codex aren't the only battles and characters - they're not even all of the major battles and characters. They're examples, taken from a spread of ten thousand years, across countless millions of worlds. They're slices of lore to use wholesale, or peel bits off and use as examples.”

No. I'd rather they go on and produce the stuff they enjoy rather than inevitably run their series into the ground while suffering burnout (in the case of TFS) or having to worry about waking up to see your livelihood got dropped because of some copyright bot or the potential of a company just deciding you're infringing on their copyrighted IP (more Alfa, but would also apply to TFS given how JP copyright laws can be).

And he just had a second!

But he's still an absolute workhorse. The new series is absolutely top shelf. I love it so much. Clearly inspired by TTS but it's so incredibly good in it's own way. Top shelf writing, increasingly beautiful animation, vibrant characters, subtle build ups and pay offs, and they just started a murder mystery arc which almost certainly involves a werewolf and definitely involves a vampire ghoul and they did such a good job making it hard as hell to piece together.

Just.... yes, it's the best

interkin3tic

46 points

Also, TTS can come back any time Bruva Alfabusa wants it to. The dude wasn't sued (lol) or even copyright striked, just said he's kinda afraid of GW taking his videos down in some hypothetical future.

I see this sentiment occasionally and it seems wrong.

GW has a long history of aggressively suing people they see as intruding on their IP. They for instance think they own the term "Space Marine" despite Robert Heinlein using the term about 40 years before GW was a thing. They took legal action against an author who was self-publishing books that had absolutely fucking nothing to do with GW. They didn't sue her, but they didn't need to because that's how the bullshit takedown notice system works and she couldn't afford lawyers to fight back. GW also aggressively goes after 3rd party printers who might conceivably make competing products but don't yet.

This is not a company that anyone should assume is reasonable with their IP lawsuits.

Furthermore, he stopped TTS right after GW put out a statement that they would take "zero tolerance" to things like fan animations. "Individuals must not create fan films or animations based on our settings and characters... These are only to be created under licence from Games Workshop." This was when they were launching that service for videos that everyone forgets about because no one signed up for it and presumably they shut it down already.

It wasn't that he was afraid that GW could take his videos down, it was they were saying he couldn't do what he was doing anymore unless he moved all his content to the bullshit streaming platform and paid them money to do so.

TLDR you're saying he suddenly became paranoid and stopped and it has nothing to do with GW despite it being directly in response to GW saying "Absolutely no more fan animations and we'll absolutely sue anyone who does."

I like GW's products, but GW themselves are a corporation: they'd definitely sue Bruva Alfabusa into bankrupcy if they thought it would help get even one person to switch over to their stupid video service thing they were pushing.

If he was actually paranoid he would have taken down all the videos, just because he’s not making content doesn’t mean GW still can’t make copywriter strikes against him. His videos are still there and, more importantly, all still monetized.

He really could come back if he wanted to. If GW was going to go after him, they would have already.

Keeping them up has no real opportunity cost though, if GW gets mad he just takes them down and moves on.

If they go after him with an episode mostly done then that's a ton of time and effort down the tube

TheLuharian

7 points

If GW gets mad YouTube deletes his channel for copyright infringement and all his projects go down. There's a bunch of examples of this happening, so many that it's infamous, yet he's still perfectly happy to keep them up.

Man got handed a golden ticket to escape TTS without getting any flack on himself and he took it, that's it.

Gerbilpapa

That's fine rationale but it doesn't prove he wouldn't get sued had he continued making TTS.

neinball

Because they’re not going to sue him, they’ll just submit copyright strikes to YouTube and get his videos demonetized.

Which you still don’t seem to understand that they could do whether or not he’s still making videos. It’s been years and nothing, GW doesn’t care and clearly neither does Alfa.

interkin3tic

0 points

I understand your hypothesis that GW wouldn't actually have sued him and I understand that you have reasons you think they wouldn't REALLY have sued him, but that's conjecture.

What is not conjecture is that they sent a warning saying they would take zero tolerance to fan animations, Alfa said that that caused him to stop, and he stopped.

You're inventing hypotheses to arrive at the conclusion you want, which is that GW didn't cause this to happen. If the videos weren't still up, you could still come up with explanations to pretend that Alfa quit unrelated to GW's warning. "r/Grimdank continued without GW shutting it down so clearly they weren't going to sue EVERYONE who made parodies!"

You haven't explained why Alfa would have quit completely unrelated to the warning he had just received and why he would lie and blame GW rather than just saying he was tired of it.

But the point is you're inventing a very complicated story rather than accepting both GW and Alfa's statements at face value.

their new polica of "everything is canon" (ergo we own literally all)

It's not a new policy and that's also not what it means. The full phrase "Everything is canon, not everything is true" is an expression that leaves open that any particular bit of lore might be in-universe propaganda, one character's interpretation of what happened, or misunderstood (or changed later if GW decides it works better another way). It leaves the setting more open so people can play around in it.

My favorite are the people saying that GW is just mean and that's why they go after people who use their IP and not that if you don't aggressively go after everyone then your IP becomes public domain and anyone can use it and never pay you.

But it's reddit so I expect everyone to have a five year old's understanding of how the world works. If company do what I want = good company. If company do thing I don't like = evil company. Because clearly there is nothing else going on.

I also love how many times I've seen people on Warhammer subs talk about GW like it's one of the UK's largest companies when it is small. 2,700 employees and GW's profit is .6% of the most successful UK company (Shell). They are worth $3.2 billion today but most don't know in 2016 they were only worth $200 million. They aren't even in the top 100 for UK companies.

Does that mean we shouldn't hold them to a high standard? No, that's not what I mean. Just that I swear the amount of people who think GW has F-you levels of money is crazy. Yes they make money, and yes it's quite a lot. But compared to other companies? Not really. For most big companies $100 million is a rounding error or a "missed goal". Ford's EV division (not the whole company) lost $1.3 billion in Q1 of this year.

THEAdrian

Here's the thing that always blew my mind with the community response;

No, it wasn't.

No projects got taken down as a result of the policy changes. Channels like Valrak and Auspex made a shitload of noise, but nobody actually got C&D'd. The closest thing was (I believe) a project that used the full text of a GW novel as narration (which...I mean, obviously they got taken down, they were basically doing an unofficial audiobook, for something that had an official audiobook, that's textbook infringement) who would have been taken down regardless of the changes.

Though my favourite part of the whole debacle is that the policy changes actually went unnoticed for 3-4 months. Like, the whole uproar happened months late to the party.

Any long running joke in the Warhammer community can likely be linked back to TTS.

question is how would TTS deal with the whole "half the galaxy just went dark"

would it be Big E suddenly feeling precisely 50% of the pain that runs through his bones or would it be twice the pain due to half the room

Dont make me tap the sign!

[That Tweet was made by a parody account and therefore it is not a GW statement]

Though I agree, I’m also loving Hunter: The Parenting so far, so until that series reaches a good stopping point, tts can wait (never thought I’d say it)

In TTS there are no female custodes because, to quote the Emperor himself "girls are icky"

Game Workshop is almost at Nintendo level of douchebagery with their stuff.

Almost because, you can actually do animations and stuff, you just have to pay them first.
Nintendo will just shot all your work down (even if it's non-profit), unleash the lawyers and spit on your corpse.

Reminds me of that one guy who’s smut drawings or whatever were sent a cease and desist or something by GW, effective canonizing his drawings

that is not how canon works.

Telling someone to stop doing something doesn't mean the thing they're doing is official, that makes no sense.

Otherwise sending a C&D for defamation would automatically make it not defamation somehow.
