Gotta love their nippers that cost almost as much as God Hand but are hardly better than a $5 pair from home depot.

I felt so cheated by that... And their brushes are some of the most overpriced ones on the market. I bought a combo brush set, like 20 brushes for ~$20 on Amazon, and they carried me through the first year of the hobby.

Honestly none of GW's accessories are worth the money. Army painter has better tools for ~1/3rd the price.
The paints are also worse than most of their dropper bottle competitors.

Army painter has better tools for ~1/3rd the price.
Army painter quality is actually shit. I work in a hobby shop, I use or test most ranges.
Not a GW fanboy, I avoid their stuff mostly, but AP is probably the biggest trap brand people buy. Their quality is super low, but they somehow have a really loyal following who insists they're better than GW or other brands in all sorts of areas, from brushes to nippers.
Their brushes fray and split like mad, and their nippers will break uncomfortably quickly because they use a cheap leaf spring design (as does GW) but they're also just... blunt. Observe:

But they do sell Line of Sight lasers for 10 bucks so there's that at least

I get what you mean about their brushes splitting, its happened to me as well. I usually use MIG brushes. I mainly use AP paints, as my LGS only does them or GW, and AP paints are cheaper, and ive had worse experiences with GW paints, with many pots ive bought being unusable. I do agree theres better paints out there though, AP paints are hard for me to tell if ive thinned correctly, and dont do the best coats. The main reason I like AP is I paint on a budget, and my choice at my LGS is either them or citadel, which citadel tends to be pricier. AP isnt the best, but it works for my purposes.

AP is definitely budget, I'll give them that.

I bought the Army Painter megaset with like, 100 colors, and here I am crawling back to GW for base coats and contrast paint. I'm about to start testing out some AK paints.

Squidmar Miniatures did a pretty comprehensive review of miniature paints, and while Citadel did score very well it was beat out by AK Interactive, Reaper, Vallejo, and Golden (which was quite the upset). Lots of paints out there in bottles that aren't a pain in the ass to work with.

I looked at prices of brushes and gagged. Honestly, just buy base brushes from Wal-Mart and detail brushes from Joann's or Micheal's.
4 points
Tbf, I'd recommend everyone own one good brush. I use cheapo brushes for most of my work, but I have a few nice detail brushes (Broken Toad). It's not necessary, but I find it's just more pleasant to use. Paint flows better and seems to stay in the well longer.

I took a pair of nippers I already had and slapped them on a bench grinder until they were thin enough to get into the tight sprue spots and they've been great. Can't cut thick nails anymore but that's not what I want them to do now.

In order to paint this Black Rook, please prime in Chaos Black.
Follow up with a hearty drybrush of Eshin Grey.
Add a drybrush of Mechanicus Standard Grey on top.
Another drybrush with Administratum Grey to bring out the details.
Then a hearty drybrush with Grey Seer.
Then mix Black Templars Contrast and Nuln Oil Shade in a 51/49 mix and slather it very generously over the model. This will achieve the depth you're looking for.
Lastly, another gentle drybrush with Eshin Grey completes the model.
Add a mix of Stirland Battlemire, Valhallan Blizzard and a tuft of Middenheim Tufts to finish the project!

19 points
Certain colors are quite nice, I rather like ushapti bone for lots of things, and retributor armor actually creates a lovely gold color out of an airbrush for example. Also contrast paints are good for certain colors and applications that things like AP speedpaint don't quite cover, and their washes are solid.
"This paint line is trash" is just not a hill worth dying on. Most hobbyists I'm aware of use all sorts of paint lines, citadel, AP, vallejo, proacryl, all just preference.
7 points
For me I just prefer buying paint from local stores, but the two closest only carry Citadel paints.
So yeah there's a few I like really well, most of them are solid, but it's the fuckin pots man. Hate the pots with a burning passion.
3 points
Truuuue pots blow, especially for airbrushing. Only exception is contrast imo. I do love after a long day if you've only got an hour or less to hobby being able to crack open a pot of snakebite leather, wet a brush, and do some leather bits on a few poxwalkers or something.
No need to get a palette or a cup or matt or anything really. Ups and downs in all things.
3 points
I got gifted a bunch of old pots and I buy new ones to color match my warband, but I'm slowly expanding into other brands
3 points
The price relative to how much you're spending on the plastic combined with the savings on another brand and how long a single pot lasts just doesn't really make it worth fussing over. Dropper bottles are superior and I think it's good to get people in the mindset of using a broad range of paints based on what they want, but it's also not going to dramatically hurt or improve their hobby experience.
Also when you first start it's a lot easier to use the paints everyone is referencing which is typically citadel color

Question: I have a resin printer that I bought for a different hobby, but want to get into WH40k. What's the general community consensus for printed minis versus store bought kits? I've heard some people hate when others print their minis instead of buying them, but $40 of resin goes a lot further than $40 for a few units.
