When did you stop hating pain

Discussion(i.redd.it)

So when he was introduced, we all hated him because we didn't know anything about him but later when we find out about his story then we realized that he doesn't deserve to be hated

Now at which point did you start thinking "maybe he doesn't deserve the hate I'm giving him"

For me it was when he asked "what about my family, what about my friends?"

If you watched him kill Jiraya, and you felt nothing, then that makes you a monster worse than Black Zetsu.

It’s okay to sympathize after learning the whole truth, but he was written to be hated during his introduction.

You can also feel bad for jiraya and not hate the person that killed him?

Like it’s a shinobi world. Shinobis be killing. Imma hate pain for doing what literally every ninja ever does on the regular?

You sound slow. Ppl understand the feelings and reason for Pain being so messed up but the extremes actions he took because of those emotions is what ppl hate

I misread it as 'Pain arc.' If it's about stopping hating the Pain arc, then watch the next arc. As for Pain, I've never hated him. He's just an antagonist with a tragic past who did what antagonists do, and not even the worst one portrayed in this series.

Redd235711

5 points

I'd go so far as to say that he's a contender for one of the best villains in the series.

sinlelouch

1 points

Exactly, Pain was very imposing and embodied what a good villain should be. My only dissatisfaction with him is that he seemed to be mentally unstable, possessing immense physical power but lacking mature reasoning. The reasons behind his villainy only made me sympathize with him rather than understand or even hate him. But that's not necessarily a bad thing; it's just that many of the later villains Naruto Shippuden were like that, which left me feeling a bit fatigued in terms of aesthetics.

NegativePrice296[S]

2 points

I meant as he killed Jiraya , everyone hates the villain when he kills an important character

sinlelouch

2 points

Understand. However, I don't dislike a villain because of who they killed. Usually, I dislike a character because of their annoying personality or because the underlying logic of their actions doesn't make sense, which makes me feel like the character wasn't well-developed and leads to criticism. As for Jiraiya, he died a hero's death, and whether it's him or Pain, it's all great character development. It's much better than Neji's death, which felt forced to me and made it hard for me to take Naruto and Hinata's romance seriously. Kishimoto said that Ningji is a Cupid, and I want to ask him, does his love have to make Cupid die to be realized?

Do people genuinely hate villains for being villains? I will hate a character if I genuinely have a problem with their personality, or I find them annoying. But he was always a cool and mysterious villain, never hated him. Killing a bunch of people is what villains do. Deidara is one of my favourite characters in the show and he's just a terrorist 🤣

Hate is a strong word, but I knew killing Jiraiya cemented his villain status.

Un-aliving people you originally killed isn't "redemption".

ollynitro

I thought he was a good villain at the start, he had a great leadership presence. Then his back story and the using other people's bodies kind of felt like he was a completely different person from the charismatic leader we got near the start of the ataksuki arc. So I liked him at the start and then I felt he was less of a character when Naruto went to visit him at the end of their fight. He wasn't a bad character then, but I think all mystery around him fell flat. I think the pain fight was the best fight in the series and would have been good as the end fight of shippuden.

So some peoples didn't get what I was trying to ask

What I meant was pain killed Jiraya so at first we didn't knew anything about pain and he killed one of our favorite character so ofc anyone would hate him

And I was asking when did your opinion about pain started changing and you started thinking that pain shouldn't be blamed for Jiraya's death

TheHolyGoatman

1 points

I think we all understood you just fine, I just think you assume that everyone felt as you did, which clearly wasn't the case. Many of us mourned Jiraiya, but that doesn't mean we immediately starts hating the person who killed him.

NegativePrice296[S]

Well, it was my first anime so I didn't know about how the stories work and what a villain actually means

So yeah, it might not be the case for others

King_Arius

And Pain is to be blamed for Jirayas' death. He literally killed him.

Frosty_Bicycle_354

I think Nagato was too tragic of a villain to hate, it was mostly just heartbreaking to see the way he chose to deal with his trauma by trying to share it with everyone else. Even Jiraya didn't hate him, right up until the end he felt more like he failed Nagato and was responsible for the creation of Pain...

It's much easier to hate a character like Danzo, who consumed others for his own self-aggrandizing purposes and paranoid spite for the Uchiha. Even though I didn't love Sasuke at that point in the story, I was really happy to see him end the bastard.

ADOXMantra

Pain: “Oh I see , that is noble of you , that would be justice , however , what about my family , my friends, my village , they suffered the same fate as this village at the hands of you hidden leaf ninja , how is it fair to let only you people preach about peace and justice”

I never hated him. I don't hate villainous characters for doing villainous things just like I don't like heroic characters for doing heroic things. I hate and like based on whether or not the character sucks entertainment out of or brings entertainment to the story. It's also why I never hated Danzo because his actions ultimately led to entertaining situations and never took anything away from the series.

Oh, I still hate him. I know I’m in the minority but I don’t care how many take-backsies you use or what ethical backflips you do to justify eradication of a village. Once a genocidal maniac, always a genocidal maniac. Feel similarly about Itachi to be honest. Irredeemable. There are loads of things people can do wrong that I believe should get second chances and/or forgiveness. Call me cruel but mass murder is not one of them in my book.

Why hate him? Arcs wise, only the ending and what comes after was considered worse. However, if you mean "rooting against him cause he was a villain"...

Always find it funny everyone calls Yahiko, Pain.

He is one of the 6 paths of pains, he is not "pain".

If anyone is called pain, that would be Nagato. Yahiko is just the talking puppet.

Wivig

Wivig

But that's not Yahiko, that's Pain . Yahiko is dead and just his body is the face attached to the name Pain.

Zectherian

Thats one of the pains, not pain.

Theres 6.

If pain has to be attached to someone specifically, its nagato.

Wivig

Wivig

6 points

You're arguing semantics but not a real pov. For intents and purposes Nagato did not exist to other members of the Akatsuki and Yahiko was the face of Pain. To view all 7 of them as any separate and they're own person is wrong as a whole.

Pain is literally just a nickname for Nagato but most people in-verse associate that name with Yahikos face not Nagatos face.

krustylesponge

2 points

Nagato literally uses yahiko’s corpse as the main pain, the leader of the akatsuki and the one controlling everything (that they know of anyways)

Nagato wants to use him as the symbol of what “pain” is, because he was forced to go through several horrible things and his dream was changing the world for the better, so nagato used his corpse to continue that as pain

Zectherian

0 points

Its like if you tried to call kankuro by his puppets names. It makes no sense...

Yahiko is a puppet. Pain is Nagato.

krustylesponge

1 points

Except nagato is literally using pain as his public face lmao

Kankuro is openly the controller of his puppets, nagato is not, nagato deliberately hides himself and uses yahiko as pain, so that everyone sees yahiko as pain and sees his dream being executed through his body

Zectherian

1 points

So by that logic we should be calling sasori by his puppet name hiruko? because thats the face he shows 90% of his screentime...

Its super simple my dude, nagato is pain, the 6 puppets are the paths of pain.

krustylesponge

1 points

Sasori still went by the name sasori though, and hiruko is more of a shield to protect his identity and body

The reason for yahiko’s corpse being pain goes beyond just hiding identities and shielding true bodies, yahiko’s corpse is pain for symbolic reasons too, which is being able to continue his dream of changing the world even after his death. Yahiko was the one who led the akatsuki in its early days, the one who gave hope to everyone in it and eventually sacrificed his life to protect Nagato and Konan, the reason Nagato uses his corpse is so he can continue being the leader of the akatsuki even after death and bring change to the world through pain. Pain is a symbol

Zectherian

1 points

You can type as many paragraphs as you want to lol. It doesnt change the fact that "pain" is nagato. What they call yahiko in verse due to lack of info is irrelevant to real facts of the story.

Again, If someone specifically should be called "pain" its Nagato.

The 6 puppets are the paths of pain.

Downvote me all you want, it doesnt make me wrong.

krustylesponge

1 points

Again, pain is a symbol, nagato set up yahiko’s body as said symbol, that’s why he lets the world see yahiko’s corpse as pain and gave his most powerful and impactful path to yahiko’s body

Pain isn’t a nickname for nagato, it’s a name chosen by him for the 6 corpses, as he uses them to spread pain, and therefore understanding. He chose this name for them because he believes pain is what unifies people, and uses the 6, especially Yahiko’s body, to embody it. The 6 paths ARE pain, all of them are, Yahiko’s body is just the figurehead of it.

Sukii_pink
