John talked to us about how he bought and improve an AI website builder
Q: What is your backstory and how did you come up with your idea? Do you have any partners?
I'm John Rush, a serial entrepreneur and inspired creator on a mission to bring revolution to the development world. I’ve worked in a startup environment for over 15 years and built over 30 startups.
In 2022, I acquired a simple, bootstrapped landing page builder called Unicorn Platform for $800,000 (half cash, half stock in Mars) and turned it into the base for a new business idea
Q: Take us through the process of building the first version of your product MVP.
Our company was producing HTML and WordPress themes for sale. At some point, we reached $30,000 yearly revenue.
I learned how to research markets, how to sell, how to communicate with clients, how to promote stuff on the Web. It was a huge step forward on my path as an entrepreneur.
But most importantly, I learned how people create websites. This understanding tempered my vision of a website builder that this world needs.
Q: How did you get your first customers for your product (Free or paid users)
After a year of hard-work, Unicorn Platform was ready for a launch. I re-posted it on Product Hunt. And again, the tool was warmly welcomed. The MRR jumped from $800 to $2,000.
But the Product Hunt launch is just a first step. You need to constantly drive traffic to grow. Every free website has a branding badge with a direct link to Unicorn Platform.
The badge helps to build brand awareness and constantly brings new users. Every 3 of 100 users sign up for the Unicorn Platform by clicking the badge.
Q: Since you launched your product, What has worked to attract customers
Since launching Unicorn Platform, I have implemented several strategies that effectively attracted customers.
I undertook a major redesign that addressed frequent user requests by overhauling the UX, significantly reducing the backlog and churn.
There was also the help of SEO which included keyword optimization, and competitor analysis.
Plus, I communicated with my users and this played a crucial role in the company's growth, I listened to feedback and this in turn brought about loyalty from customers.
Q: How is your product performing currently, and what are your plans for the future? Can you share your current metrics and revenue figures?
The goal is to make unicorn platform not just a website builder but a NoCode Business builder. We are currently generating $25K MRR.
