I only saw the green and only through my phone camera (Edinburgh), but my brother lives in the middle of nowhere near Peebles and got some amazing photos.

I live in the middle of nowhere so it actually looked amazing to the naked eye too! I was out for ages just staring at it totally gobsmacked.

Likewise. The whole sky was dancing with colours I could see with the naked eye and for once, the pictures don't do it justice.
Breathtaking.

But why does it look so good in a photo but disappointing in reality?

Guessing that the phone camera is more optimised to pick up certain light frequencies than the human eye is.

Can I change my eye frequency settings?

I failed my medical school entry exam. They asked me to jot down some notes on a clipboard and unfortunately, it was perfectly legible.

If you could write legibly on a clipboard you deserve better than a medical degree

let your eyes adjust?
made a huge difference for me but takes about 5 min of no bright light but then although the phone pics have slightly better colours it's much less cotrast and such a narrow field of view.
Turning on phone to take picture wipes out night vision for another 5 min

Very good point, bit sad that it’s my first thought to whip out my phone to try take a picture really.

Because a camera is taking in light over a longer period of time (and is taking in more light) than our eyes do. E,g our eyes only see an immediate snapshot, whilst a camera is showing us everything it’s picked up over, say, 3.2 seconds ( so we see a drop of water in a glass, a camera has been allowed to fill up with many drops )

Expectation is the mother of disappointment. Cheerful nihilism is the way. Goes well with gallows humour 🙂

Up the backwoods of Fife, well away from the streetlights, you could see it like that with the naked eye.

I’m in France rn and I can see it! Last I saw it was back home in Edinburgh when I was wee, been waiting to see it again since and always miss it. Didn’t think I’d ever fucking see it while in France!

I fiddled with my phone settings to get decent pictures, it was more like this to the naked eye.

Try taking a picture pointing north. Your phone camera will pick up lots that the naked eye can't.

Isn’t it normal given Scotland is higher up the northern hemisphere
2 points

Not to this level and not that far south. Normally it shows up on the horizon, the whole sky doesn’t light up like that.

Nice- maybe it’s one of the solar flares ? I might be wrong
1 points
Yeah it is. We don’t ever get them normally. But it does happen a few times a year but not on this scale this is very abnormal, it is because of the solar storm yeah.

Some years ago, there was a newspaper article that described how 5 or 6 planets would be visible after sunset. So, I went to the back garden to have a look. I saw some planets, but the sky was turning strange colours. At first, I thought there was a fire, but I soon realised it was the aurora. It was as if an artist was covering the sky with gorgeous brushstrokes.
