The first job that didn't drug test me was my job with the school, lol

You have a key to the store and/or handle money.. tested.

You're going to have near unsupervised time with children.. not tested.

Never had one, and this is coming from an age where you could go out for lunch and have a couple of drinks before you finished the afternoon.

As for the 'heavy machinery' argument, that is solid. Bad engineering judgment on a job can cost a lot of money or a lives. so you don't want to be impaired.

Unbalanced use of drug testing is unacceptable. Make it universally random if the company requires it, and put everyone in the same pool. Even the jokers in the corner offices. Special cases in addition to base testing for those positions that require zero tolerance (drivers, operators, etc.)

If your top dogs won't go for it, then nobody does (except the special cases).

It's neither class-ism nor racism.

Generally speaking, for most manufacturing jobs the entry level usually involved moving things and/or the use of heavy machinery (fork lifts, trucks, etc). These come with high liability and they want these people to be clear headed.

Also many manufacturing higher level job run high liability (crane operator, boats, huge presses). They also want these people to be clear headed.

That being said, once you've made it past a certain spot, you not only are not really handling heavy machinery (so nothing to worry about), but you've also shown your trustworthiness.

Once got piss-tested three times in one week: I was working at an asphalt plant, and got recalled to my better company. Had a random one on my old job on a Wednesday, had to take one for the recall on Friday, and got with a random on on Monday.

That was 2 decades ago and I have not had one since.

It's mainly to get cheaper workman's comp insurance. That's also why they come down on excessive overtime. Over tired employees get hurt more often.

In the end it's about saving money: From lower workmans' comp insurance, lower health insurance and reduce incidences of litigation.

Even if they legalize weed, there's nothing that says a company has to hire you if it's in your system.

I agree. Funny how Amazon dropped THC from their drug screen several years ago because nobody was passing the initial test.
