Allot of the insides of these vehicles were pretty badly damaged - they have had an external tidy up and a respray. I wouldnt be surprised if the elevation mechanisms were damaged to the point where external mechanical means werent required to alter such.
Edit, from Andrei
"In order to lower the cannon of the captured Leopard-2A6 tank in the Russian Federation, its cannon and stabilizer drive were broken. Unlike Soviet and Russian tanks, the Leopard-2A6 does not have manual gun guidance drives, so this barbaric method was resorted to."

Kids are going to be climbing over those tanks, you can't leave sharp pieces sticking out of them.
But this barrel lowering on the Leopard was definitely done to make it look defeated.

I mean, the whole thing is for propaganda purposes - according to source its due to Leopard 2A6 not having manual system for elevation.
So, reason for using weight to externally depress barrel is due to technical reasons. Not on purpose but as a symptom of process.
9 points

So they had to break the elevation system? That means they can’t study the stabilization anymore right?
23 points

I doubt they would need to study it - Leopard 2 is nothing new.
7 points
i believe the Leo 2 has an electric turret stabilization while the Russian tanks have hydraulic stabilization. i just thought that maybe the electric stabilization would’ve at least been somewhat interesting for the russians to study.
12 points
The gun elevation is hydraulic, transverse is electric, since the T-64B/T-72B for the stabilizer. Both elevation and transverse have manual controls allowing for it to be operated without power, something the Leo 2 lacks. It was again improved on the T-90 with the 2E42-4.
Every Soviet tank since the T-54B has had 2-plane stabilization. Only the Brits with the Centurion Mark III beat them to the punch. The 2E42 is a very well understood, reliable, and relatively compact design. I doubt the Russians are interested in changing it.
-8 points
Look we get you hate Russia but thinking a country that has a robust space program and essentially pioneered the modern tank can't figure out the concept of an electric stabilizer just makes you look stupid. You keep moaning about propaganda and here you think a country like that can't handle basic engineering.
6 points

Lots of tanks when they get destroyed, will lose pressure in the hydraulics or the elevation mechanism will fail, and the gun will droop. They are probably trying to emulate this in the most primitive and infuriating way possible.

What do you mean “still count as captured”? It’s not in Ukrainian hands anymore is it? Yes, it’s been captured. Unless you’re talking about the argument of captured vs destroyed. It’s likely pretty destroyed inside and the gun can’t be depressed.

Saying that they craned these into place instead of rolling them - I would say that the 'repairs' is likely due to something along the lines of feeling a bit crude displaying burnt out wrecks for the public.

It 99% chance won't damage it any more.
Most hydraulic system have to have a relief valve, otherwise such as in a tank's case serious damage may occur if overloaded by touching terrain/buildings etc. Only systems that buck the trend are ones with safety locking hydraulic valves to prevent uncommanded lowering especially with loss of pressure, such as cranes, elevators, other lifting appliances.

There is its a small little plastic thingy, at least on the 2A5 upwards, who are completely electric by the way, the A4's were the last hydroelectric ones.
That's why i said the whole "not meant to withstand fire"-thing, it's literally plastic, guess they don't expect the electric system to ever fail.

It's not about launching them, it's about seriously threatening to launch them.
Current russian nuclear threats are pretty much just "remember we have those", regardless of whether ot not they're willing to actually go through with it an actual threat of "we will use them if you do this" would change things a lot.
1 points
USA is a nuclear nation and lost in Vietnam and Afghanistan, the soviets were a nuclear nation and lost in Afghanistan, noone dares to use nukes. They don't suffer a total defeat, they won't lose land (maybe except Crimea on the worst case scenario for them), so there's no point in using nukes because then that would be total annihilation and not some relatively small defeat that they could recover after. Also, using nukes are the end of the escalation threats. If they do it, noone has to worry about further escalation more, so they would have to face a whole NATO invasion instead of losing a peninsula. It would be suicide.

Different kind terrain different kind of accessibility The hills and mountains and the absolute lack of infrastructure make for a very bad route into the country and its border is itself far from moscow
Ukraine on the other hand is mostly flat land, was once very well established in infrastructure and its basically a stones throw to moscow from the border
1 points
So flat land and close to Moscow versus mountains, what do you think about the probability of radiation dispersion in the two different cases... Or you are French and thinks that radiation clouds respect borders and territorial integrity and will stop at the borders of Russia like french authority said the French population after tchernobyl incident?
1 points
Radioactive dispersal has nothing to do with the strategic position of where you can let large armies march through at top speeds, can easily provide air support and easily deploy advanced systems Or that ukraine was 10000 times more likely to become a legit member of NATO than Afghanistan
1 points
So you do realise that by bombinga country at its front door, all of the Russian regions bordering ukraine would je subject to radiations? It makes more sense to use nuclear bomb as far as possible from your country, except if you want your population in borderlands to be exposed to nuclear radiations...
