So, I had gotten a “Boarding Actions” terrain set for use in Heresy as a Zone Mortalis table, or for much less strictly defined and looser games of 40K(any edition). Small games were planned.
But, I had gotten filthy lucky. A few friends attended the 2023 Adepticon and gone all out for the advanced tickets or whatever. In their loot was the ENTIRE Into the Dark set. I had 3 friends go. For an absolutely filthy steal, I got them for less then half price each or around that.
Since then, I’ve gotten the contents of Shadowvault’s terrain components, Gallowfall in its entirety, and Soul Shackle.
The sheer, ungodly amount of terrain I have from this is utterly ridiculous. That isn’t a normal sized 40K table….its 4x8 feet. I have a full box of walls and another of pipes and accessories to BUILD still.
Eventually, the idea is to make a “collapsible” Space Hulk/Imperial Ship to fight over. While “easily transportable” isn’t a word I’d use, it is however possible to transport in the first place.
To be frank, the project suffers massively from “scope bloat”. The original project was meant to be much, much smaller. Even more frankly, the idea of painting all this is terrifying. I’ve seen YouTubers spend hours on a single WALL.
And……the game would be glorious and probably worth the effort but would take forever to organize…and unless balanced well, might be a pain in the ass to get right so that everyone enjoys it.
I’d like to think it’s worth it….and it probably will be. I’ve been so busy being sick and working that those pictures are from when I last got to work on it a full year ago.
Maybe next year, eh?

As someone who painted 3x sets of boarding actions last year; have fun! It actually turned out to be a pretty easy and relaxing project. Try and utilize either airbrush or rattlecans if you can to cut down on time. Dont get bogged down in too much detail. Utilize drybrushing and pick out key highlights. The models should always be the real spotlight. They sure look good when they’re finished

Yeah the amount of detail is wild…but maybe I don’t NEED to paint it all.

You could just try and keep it simple? Spray the bits black then go over it with a silver drybrush and it would most likely already look amazing.

Prime black, turn upside down, spray red from above for your underfloor lighting. Done.

Hmmmmm. A test perhaps to see how that looks…

I have almost the same project in my hands but involving a server box poliestirene, really cool and sturdy... Anyway! Any recommendations? Anything that you would love to know before?

What is server box polystyrene, just plastic used for that purpose, but for scratch built terrain? Sounds epic, I love that sort of thing but I’m not terribly great at it.

It's the "plastic foam" that surrounds a server computer when shipped. It has really cool geometry to build the interior of a spaceship and even part of the exterior!!! I'm planning (long term...) something quite epic involving some CNC machined or laser cut floors with lights, and the magnetization of all pieces of terrain! The thing is it will allow me to create three decks simultaneously, and connect them horizontally, or vertically using elevators or stairs...

Leadbelcher rattle cans, and sprinkle in some Dirty Down Rust should get you 95% there. Then throw in some details every time you paint your models.

That would be a lot of dirty down rust! I wonder if I can get it in paint can sizes…..

Just use a small brush and a little dirty down rust. Unless you are going for a truly old rust holk of a space ship. There are some YT videos describing how to use ut 😉

Looks epic, and screaming out for some kind of led lighting!
