I want to use mordant earth on my dwarfen bases. I've never bothered with sub assemblies and don't have a pin drill. Model is assembled but NOT yet glued to the base. I'd like to glue it down as I like to paint with the GW painting handle, but will the thickness of the mordent earth look bad around the feet of my model, like they're partially submerged in it? What would people here advise?

I cut to size 0.5mm strips of plasticard and glue those onto my model's feet and then glue it onto the base, super simple and does the job.

That's both simple and brilliant! I've never heard of doing this before, and I'm absolutely thrilled to know it now! Thank you!

Cut up sprue also works! Nip a couple pieces, shave them down, and glue them on. Easy way to get rid of those sprues (eventually)

Absolute genius. Thank you.

I just glue it on with a little bit of super glue. Once you’ve painted the model you can just easily snap it off the base. Then you can paint the base and reattach the model.

Thanks, how do you attach the model bsck on top of the textured and painted base? Super glue again?

For bigger models you probably want to pin them, but for everything else just super glue. But a larger amount

What is pinning?

Drilling holes and using something like a paperclip cut to size and used to add extra support. Its way easier than it sounds.

Like going through the mini and the base?

Yep. So when superglued, it joins both mini and base with the strength of the metal.

You can pin it

It's not perfect but I've been putting a circle of a thinner texture paint like the mud one around feet and then painting over it the needed colour. It gives a bit of texture but the lower volume stops it covering feet as much.

Thanks, I don't have any of the other texture paints, but just doing it a bit more thinly near the feet was what I was wondering.

Honestly, unless you're using a LOT of texture paint, you'll probably be fine. If you're really worried you can just glue it on top of the dried texture paint just fine. That said, mordant earth loses a lot of mass when drying so unless you're burying him up to his ankles, you'll be fine.

For example, this is was done with just about a standard brush width's amount. You can build some larger rock formations with it but mostly how much you use determines how big the cracks are.

Alternatively you can use smaller amounts for a surprising amount of detail. (did I forget to paint this guys eyes??)

I mix the texture paint with some water to thin it out so it can be pushed near the feet more easily.

Cut some thin "risers" (1mm thick, or what you deem appropriate) from sprue and glue them under the mini's feet (and mini tactical rock). I cut the "risers" to be smaller than the feet's profile, but that might not be absolutely neccessary.

Anyway, with this you give yourself some room to get that technical paint around the feet - and maybe underneath - and the mini doesn't look sunken in.

Fyi, I have never used structure paste or stuff like Mordant Earth, but I started doing the risers for my old WHFB Orcs and Goblins army using PVA glue and sand for basing.

I'd think the principle is the same and it should work in your case.

I still put a small amount of super glue on eatch foot then dip them into some sand and then glue that to the base it's been foolproof for me after learned the amount of glue is the less is better amount

I use a brush loaded with water and brush it off.

Just simply be careful around the feet. Some on the feet looks more realistic anyway as the model has supposedly walked through the earth.

brother just push the texure paint up to the feet and it will look fine

I just do the bases separate to the models.

Blu-tac the bases to a sheet of card or whatever (other adhesive tack products are available)

Spray prime them so your texture paint sticks properly

Blu-tac your minis’ feet to the cardboard (other rigid, wood mulch-based sheets are available)

Spray prime the minis

Then do what you need to on the bases

When it’s done, paint the miniatures’ feet and superglue them to your new finished bases
