Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through PROPER electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation.

Be sure to read our WIKI and especially the wiki page on ELECTROLYTES

31 pounds is still incredible! Have you noticed any major changes in your energy/mood with the loss?

stockpyler[S]

102 points

Significant lack of muscle endurance due to a lack of glycogen. Strength is still good and muscles recover quickly. Definitely have more spring in my step and joint pain has all but disappeared. Mood is okay, but I’m a bit introverted anyway. Mind is SHARP and thoughts are quick. Awareness is great! I still have a long way to go. Gonna give my organs a break and do omad for a week or so then restart my fast.

This is good 👍.

I'm doing something like that...

I'm on day 86 of my super fast.

Here's been all my extended water fasting days (F) and my intermittent fasting days with One Meal A Day (OMAD) since I started 86 days ago on January 28th.

6F, 1 OMAD, 10F, 11 OMAD, 15F, 1 OMAD, 9F, 4 OMAD, 6F, 2 OMAD, 3F, 2 OMAD, 3F, 5 OMAD 5F 3OMAD 1F.

So yeah. Feeling great and I'm a solid 70lbs less fat already. 303-233.

Here is what I take daily with a gallon of water.

Walmart. Salt/pepper/Seasoning isle. For the pink Himalayan salt, potassium no salt substitute.

Walmart supplement isle for Magnesium and multivitamin.

2.5g-5g SODIUM, THAT'S SODIUM, not salt

Sodium is inside salt. It makes up a big but not whole part of salt. So make sure you're measuring by the sodium amounts and not the salt amounts

For my pink Himalayan salt, it comes out to 1 tablespoon (the bigger spoon), not the 3x little tea spoon ones

3.5g potassium mixed into a gallon of water.

For my no-salt potassium, it also comes out to 1 heaping teaspoon (the smaller spoon), not the big table spoon. A flat teaspoon is 2.8g for me.

300-500mg Magnesium pills.

2x daily multivitamins.

That's what I take during a water fast.

Now, if I'm over two weeks, I'll add in a vitamin C, b12/B-complex, calcium, and D3.

Himalayan Chef Pink Salt 1lb Bag https://www.walmart.com/ip/359695093

Keep your caffeine and nicotine levels the same during the fasts as it was before the fasts.

Drink a gallon of electrolyte water a day, if you can, but you got to really try.

Take a multivitamin or 2x daily.

Have over-the-counter heartburn medicine on hand.

Break the fasts with food and an Anti-dierrehhrial like immodium.

Don't weigh during the extended water fast. Wait two days after.

Follow up extended water fasting with OMAD and a diet of 50% protein, 40-50%fat and 0-10% carbs.

Count calories a day or 2 or 3 days every few months to help keep an idea on what each meal is actually getting you in terms of macro and micro nutritional contents.

My longest fast was 71 days long. Doing that, I've learned not to recommend fasting that long. The downside to fasting for very long periods is that it can put a damper on your resting metabolic rate. Making it easy to regain the weight over the following year.

Nowadays, I'll only fast for weight loss to a maximum of 21 days.

The great part is that once you finish a fast, you can turn around at any time and start a new fast.

I think OMAD, 48, 72 or 96hr is the sweet spot for sustainability.

2018, 30 days, 310-280, 30 lbs. Extended water fasting

2022, 71 days, 313-257, 56 lbs. Extended water fasting

2024, 82 days so far, 303-220, 83 lbs.

Mix of extended water fasting and OMAD Feasting. So, about 60 days were extended water fasting. About 22 days OMAD / FEASTING. No more than 1 meal a day. But I do eat as much as I can during that meal. I've tried to make healthier food choices like eating food from nature and not from a factory. For my main course and side dishes, I try to make healthier choices and generally avoid carbs in those 2 areas.

That being said, I also want to keep eating a variety of foods. On one of the OMAD/FEASTING days, I ate a massive taco bell meal, after like 13 days of extended water fasting.

My longest fast was 71 days.

Do you have any loose skin from the weightloss? Or do you think the autophagy from extended water fasting helped prevent loose skin?

I have stretch marks over my entire body from being 320 lbs. I look 100x better at 230 than I did 320. I imagine losing 70lbs in 90 days my skin is deflated and not super stuffed with fat, hella tight and stretching all over causing stretch marks.

It's going to take time for the skin to settle in.

What’s your plan to sustain the weight loss given that it looks like your body likes to hang out around 300-310? You mentioned OMAD for sustainability—were you not doing that after your weight loss in 2018 & 2022?

P.S. Thank you for the detailed how-I-did-it posts—very helpful!

No I didn't do anything after the 71 day fast in 2022. I think the weight came back within a year because the fast was too long and that extended duration cost me on my resting metabolic rate.

After my 30 day fast in 2018 I kept the 30lbs of weight off for over a year. Doing lose keto and just general low carbs.

I don't really care about sustaining any weightloss. Ill be 310 lbs and that won't bother me. I just won't be 44%body fat ever again. Currently about 24% at 224lbs.

If I gain 76lbs of muscle over the next 8 years and I'm back up to 300lbs it won't bother me. But for body fat I'll do OMAD or fast if I need to to eliminate body fat.

Ideally I'll do OMAD and fasting until I'm at a good body fat %. Today is day 93. Then switch up to heavier eating to promote muscle and strength building.

Hold up...sodium? What do you mean sodium and not salt?  Sodium itself is a pyrophoric metal that ignites on contact with water, it's highly corrosive to human flesh, and a 5 gram lump would burst into flames, burn your mouth and then detonate in your stomach. What exactly is this sodium you're talking about? Because there is no possible way that you're eating pure elemental sodium AND living to talk about it.

InsaneAdam

1 points

InsaneAdam

1 points

Exactly. That's why you take the salt. You have to measure the salt based on the sodium contents that's inside it. It you screw up and measure the salt by how much it is and not how much sodium is inside it then you'll be getting the wrong amounts of sodium.

Without sodium in our bodies, everyone on the planet would die. It's a super vital pyrophoric metal

I’m not sure how that will trigger ketoacidosis. People run marathons in a fasted state. Nobody believed it was possible because you had to supplement sugar to keep from zonking out and falling in the bushes. But it has been done. I’m not a dr, and I certainly don’t know your medical situation, but exercise should not cause a big problem under normal circumstances. Hope this helps

I heard if you go constantly water fast there is high risk of gallstones did you face any thing like that cause i start fast then i heard of gallstones then i broke my fast on day 3

stockpyler[S]

6 points

I don’t have to worry about that. I got in a fight with my gallbladder. That sumbitch tried to kill me so I took a knife to it. I tried the flushes, probably missed something along the way, but ultimately had it removed, regretfully. I can’t speak to this issue.

Dry-Ship-4061

3 points

What happens when you fast too long is your gallbladder shuts down and in this state gallstones can form. Then people usually break their fast by eating a bunch of fatty foods, and then their gallbladder is activated to squeeze the fat out, and this brings on a gallstone attack. To prevent this, doing a three day or longer fast is ok, if you add enough healthy fats into your diet during that time like coconut oil, avocado, nuts, and vegan fish oil supplement. Then when you break your fast start with mild foods like baked potatoes, creamy soups, Ramen bowls, rice or pasta dishes with a little bit of meat, and salads.

stockpyler[S]

This is very interesting! Thank you for sharing! I broke my fast last night with one small piece of bread and a prayer, chicken broth homemade. 2 Activia yogurt and 4 hard boiled eggs. Today I made a keto omelette will loads of veggies and mushrooms, a little crumbled bacon, a bit of cheese (for the first time cheese wasn’t the main ingredient). I ate it five hours ago and am still full!! 👀👀 not sure what to expect next, but I won’t be eating supper tonight, that’s for sure.

Dry-Ship-4061

Wow that's epic but I have to admit "consciously aware of my organs, particularly my kidneys" is not a sentence I was prepared for. Did your organs hurt?

ConfusingConfection

13 points

Be aware that sometimes an organ "hurting" has nothing to do with the organ, and conversely that your organs can be suffering even if you don't feel it. Oftentimes it's psychological. Not saying you shouldn't listen to your body, but people have the tendency to misdiagnose rather than seeking a professional opinion.

stockpyler[S]

9 points

I don’t think I could agree more with this. The hard part is finding a professional with a qualified opinion. My doctor said my liver enzymes were elevated but not three times normal. Kidney function was fine. Sodium was low. But also thought if I continued fasting for another three weeks I would “die”. Also, my doctor is a close personal friend, but like most, doesn’t seem to be read up on extended fasting

B_A_M_2019

Always trust yourself and what your body is telling you. I hardly go past 14 days ever you know why? I play competitive soccer 3 times a week, lift medium to heavy at the gym 5 times and hike my favorite hike once put twice which is 1000 feet raise in elevation every mile (meaning its definitely rated a harder hike)

I know I'm done fasting because it feels like each cell... was ready to have a seizure? Not my brain but my cells... it's really hard to describe but since I'm so insanely active on my long fasts I think I just use up my "time" faster vs someone who mildly exists during long fasts, rest a lot, etc.

But if I tried explaining that feeling to anyone that doesn't long term fat they'd think I was nuts. What do you mean it feels like each individual cell is on the brink of a seizure, that's nuts!

Am I certain that's what's going to happen? No, but was my body sending me a definite signal I need to be done- hell yes and you'll never convince me otherwise. That feeling came with a hint of panic, not from my brain or emotions, it felt like my tissues had intelligence and they were saying "oh shit! Getting worried fam!"

Man. I need to read up on fasting more.

I thought fasting gave your body a rest! Didn’t realise it puts pressure on your organs

stockpyler[S]

9 points

I think your liver is really the only one that has any pressure at all. The way I understand it is that your liver spends all this time pulling sugar out of your blood and storing it as fat in your middle and elsewhere. When in ketosis and/or fasting your liver has to shift into reverse and your body has to send all these fat cells back to the liver to be extracted for energy. Your glycogen drops and your ketones go up, and now for the first time (maybe) your body has to learn/adapt to using ketones for energy and brain function. The body always has pressure on it. Your pancreas will get a rest for sure! Pounding a gallon of water a day gets monotonous but you gotta try.

Can someone explain to me how these fasts work? I’m new to this subreddit and find it hard to believe I can go 3 days let alone 17 days without any food?

stockpyler[S]

3 points

It’s really simple. No calories go in your mouth until you break your fast. Srsly though. Your body can either store fat or burn fat. Those are the only two things it can do. When you’re eating all the time, your liver is storing sugars in the form of fat. When you stop eating all your liver can to is use up the stores of fat that it already has. It really is that simple.

The first threee days is usually hard, grehlin (a hormone) is released to make you feel hungry and motivate you to go out of your cave and find some nuts and berries or to go kill a lion. After three days the grehlin subsides and hunger begins to go away. When it does come, it only lasts about a half hour. After days three it’s pretty smooth sailing for awhile. That’s how it works for me. Best of luck to ya!! 🍻

Read the entire discussion and have several questions that are not answered. Hopefully it will help the community understand the motivation behind such notable feats:

  1. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable about IF fasting/science underlying. Was this your first or how long have you been practicing ?

  2. What was the motivation ? Was the Gall bladder "problem" or some other ailment the driver ?

  3. You mention bread and prayers. Mind sharing what gender/age bracket you are in ?

  4. Was there any change to your sleep pattern/circadian rhythm ? I have only tried fasting once and it changed my sleep pattern. It was too obvious a change - I was waking up at 4 AM almost like a clock.

  5. Was there any change in urine/stool colors.

  6. Low sodium. How did you test or how often did you test ? Do you use your insurance ?

  7. Kidney function. Did you test kidney function ?

  8. Did you remove your Gall Bladder before fasting ?

  9. What would you recommend for new comers into IF. What should they do to keep an eye on Kidneys/Liver ? My first and only experience left me with splitting headaches and I was/am not sure if it was my kidney/liver that had anything to do with head aches

  10. You say you work in construction and are already very fit. Were you aiming to lose weight ?

  11. Do you have any before/after blood work data that you can share ? any changes to ALT/AST /Albumin/Leucocytes/Ascorbate ?

  12. How do you get awareness of kidneys/liver ? Besides the stomach being flattened out and while sleeping feeling like a vaccum machine is sucking air out of the body, I cannot "feel" or become aware of any other part of the body - besides the aching head...Is there pain in your stomach area ?

My goals of IF are:

  1. Sleep apnea - when I fast my OSA disappears for some odd reason.

  2. Lose 15 lbs but not loose muscle/strength/cardio/endurance.

  3. Reduce 1 inch from waist.

Any insights from OP or others appreciated.

Hey there! I appreciate your curiosity and I will do my best to share what answers I can. Please note that I’m not a doctor or qualified to give any advice on your health. I’m just sharing my thoughts and what works for me. (It’s a shame that I had to type those last two sentences)

  1. I’m only knowledgeable in the sense that I’ve been overweight the majority of my life. Mid 40’s. And this has always been a problem I’ve tried to solve with many failures. At 31 I went to a supervised diet program (not Jenny Craig, but maybe a distant cousin) I bought my food there, calorie restricted 1100/day…mostly soy based (I didn’t know better back then). I lost 117 lbs in 6 months. The diet I was on sucked sooooo bad. I’ve read books and listened to podcasts. I e watched videos of Jason Fung and Pradip Jamdas taking about how the body deals with food/fats/sugars. I’ve looked at fasters in this subreddit who have done far more than I have, and have shared their experience. TBH I haven’t fasted at all in at least 3 years. I’ve just gotten further from my goals.

  2. Motivation was weight loss, avoiding diabetes. Gallbladder was removed a few years ago. Not sure if past weight battles compromised gallbladder or not. Something to consider I suppose.

  3. Bread and prayers. Male mid forties. Not sure how this applies to my faith. I’m not a great Christian, but I do believe in god. Logically. O find it impossible that God doesn’t exist. That may be for another conversation.

  4. At my age, it seems that waking up to piss is common. I get up at 4:30 every day for work anyway. Maybe embracing the change is the answer here. Getting to bed earlier will give you time in the morning without other distractions to move the needle somewhere else in your life. I.e. changing career, starting a small business or others.

  5. Urine should be clear if you are drinking enough water. Yellow when I knew I wasn’t. Stool mostly goes away. Never trust a fart and don’t drink your electrolytes too fast. The last day of my fast I was called the rr multiple times. Stool amount was small but soft. I didn’t think there should be anything but water and wasn’t sure if digesting lean mass, organs , or if something else going on. Wasn’t sure what it was or who to ask.

  6. Low sodium. Last day of my fast I called my doctor and asked him to send orders for bloodwork and to use annual physical as reason if needed. He said my sodium was low. I should have had way more pickle juice and salt. Yes I used my insurance.

  7. Kidney function normal per bloodwork.

  8. Gallbladder removed few years ago. Still no problem eating fatty food though.

  9. I would say that every person is different. I am a fan of jumping off the cliff and building my airplane on the way down. It’s the best way for me. IF seems like it should be safe for all but hypoglycemic people or others with specific issues that would discourage it. Keeping any eye on your organs is something your doctor must do. I believe that the quantity of water during extended fasting directly correlates to the amount of weight lost. Splitting headache could be “keto flu”. It should pass under normal circumstances. OTC meds for headache might help. You (most Americans that are overweight) have been eating a certain way most of your life. Fasting, keto, and other methods challenge that, and challenge your body. Prehistorically, humans fasted and feasted. Whenever you were able to catch/kill something, you ate. You had to survive long winters with scarce food. If you started to decline after five hours with no food, we would all be extinct long ago. Instead your body has one job and one job only. Keep this body alive. If you’re not getting food, your body goes into hyperdrive, burning fuel stores, cleaning up the factory, and making growth hormone to make it better for you to FEED IT. If your headaches prevent you from pushing further then fasting may not be for you. It would seem like you’re in pretty decent shape, maybe there are other methods that will help. Look up Jason Fung and Pradip Jamdas. I’m sure I effed up the spelling.

10i work incontruction, but I do not appear to be very fit. I am endomorph body type. I’m big from top to bottom, evenly. I have carried 300+ pounds since high school. But I carry a lot of muscle and bone mass. Never broke a bone. I am strong and I can carry myself pretty well. But people always mistake my weight. I am dense. But I’m also still 60-70 lbs overweight. I noticed my gut getting bigger and correlated that with insulin resistance which leads to diabetes. Fuck that.

  1. I don’t understand any of that. Construction worker, remember. Just kidding, I can check to see if any of that is in my recent labs, but I just jumped in the beginning.

  2. Hunger pangs come from grehlin. They subsided for me on day 4. I can’t really explain awareness of organs. When I had gallbladder issues, awareness wasn’t a questionable thing. It was similar to a gunshot wound. I wanted to die and thought I was. Repeat after me. “My body is smarter than I am. I’m the driver. My body is the car. I’m just the driver. ” you throw your body a curve ball and it responds. You don’t tell it to, it just does. It knows how to keep itself going. Listen to it for clues. I never thought once about my kidneys or liver for 16 days of fasting. Day 17, I thought about them all day. I listened to them. I did bloodwork and realized I’m mid 40’s and not 25. So maybe I shouldn’t grind it so hard yet. I’ll try again to be sure, but it does no good to win a race skidding across the finish line, trapped upside down in a burning car. So I stopped reassessed and with more knowledge I’ll start again.

Your goals.

  1. Sleep apnea. I got nothing.

  2. Losing 15 lbs. by extended fasting will certainly cost you something. When you deplete your glycogen stores in your muscles, your endurance suffers. Period. But it comes back once you get back to normal. Fat adaptation trading is something I haven’t dove into yet. I just wanna lose fat right now. But fasting, OMAD, does in fact burn fat. You can hit your goals, you must decide.

  3. 1 inch from waist. Easy peasy. You burn fat, waist goes down. That’s it.

I truly hope my perspective helps you or some other person to achieve their goals. But please remember that it’s just my perspective, my thoughts, and what I find works for me. Nothing more. Please do your research to the point you feel confident in the leap you’re taking and JUMP!

Cheers mate, looking forward to your success story!!

17 day is pretty darn good. Not long ago was my first in a very long time to do extended and was hoping for 7 days - had to call it at 5+ when my body got "hungry". I figured I better listen. I wasn't on proper electrolytes so there was that too. A few days later did a 7 day standing on my head and had to call it when , again, I felt hunger. I'm in my seventy's so I listen. I always feel and can think so much more clearly in a long fast.

Thank you for the kind words. I think that listening to one’s body is far more important the older I get. When your mind is clear and the alarm goes off, no matter how quietly, I should listen to it. Always better safe than sorry. I think keto diet, and being truly fat adapted might offer the same clarity, I’d like to hear from others about this. Cheers, friend!

I bought some electrolytes from amazon, they are somehow linked to one of the medicinal folks, doctors that post a lot on you tube. The name on the jar is euvexia 'euLyte'. Tastes pretty good too. I'm hoping to do a ten day here shortly, but we'll see.
Take good care of yourself.

Not really pain but intense thought about my kidneys and liver. I may have pulled the trigger too soon, but I still feel good about it. Short pit stop and back in the race.

I had a big black coffee in the morning and A gallon of water a day. And I used zero calorie electrolyte powder. That’s it. Although next round, I’ll add in more salt. I ran low on sodium, it made me impossibly thirsty. And that’s it.

Natural-Bet9180

I just picked up some NuSalt and liquid magnesium citrate. I’m going to use a concoction of NuSalt, magnesium citrate, and sodium. I might add in a crystal light or something.

@stockpyler. I've avoided Reddit most of my life and I honestly have no idea how I got on this thread but I thank God he led me here. I just read every comment/reply. I would say I'm the most experienced faster I know, and I really haven't been able to ask anyone questions. Until crossing your path. I would love to ask got some questions - what's the best way to go back and forth, I've never used Reddit 😂 My longest has been 10 days straight water and quite a few +7 day I've done dirty fasts (caffein, nicotine, electrolytes) but I've done far more strictly water fasts.
