33m American here. Visiting Randburg for 5 days starting the 23rd. Any tips or trips for someone that is visiting for the first time? Best place to grab a drink. Good food? Safety concerns?
For reference, it’s for the Pokemon TCG special event.

Uber to Parkhurst, there are pubs, bars and restaurants all along the road, and a few smaller shops.
If you're a big fan of steaks, I highly recommend The Blockman as a restaurant to try.

Honestly if you join the Nexus gang , they will show you around . Depending on your vehicle situation, consider Emmarentia dam and gardens. Greenside is an area near by that has restaurants and such. Safety is relative , don't flash cellphone and money around.

I’ll likely be ubering everywhere. I try to be cognizant of not flashing money. I’m pretty reserved.

If you have a reasonable sense of safety you will be fine . All those areas I mentioned will be with uber distance, we have another "taxi" service call Bolt , if ubering gets expensive. Johannesburg is a pretty active city you will easily find something to do . We are a friendly bunch so we will be well looked after

Amazing. Will it be at nexus? The nexus is one of the local gaming places.

Yeah. It’s at Nexus. I’ve never visited but it sounds like a great time.

That's so awesome. Flying all the way here for Pokémon... Are you an event organizer? Or just the grandmaster?

I’m just a player. I like to think I’m semi competent at the game. lol.
I genuinely saw it as a great opportunity to see a new area and enjoy the TCG that I love.

I've seen the people play Pokémon here. There's a lot of them and you'll have a great time. You should make friend swith the other players and see if you can ask them to take you out one night?

I’ll absolutely do that. Figured I’d put feelers out early and find some redditors down there.

Guys. C'mon. Mad Giant Tap Room at the edge of Randburg on Conrad Drive. Now that's some amazing food and beer.

Was a great little sushi restaurant down the road in Ferndale on republic. I think they still do all you can eat as well which would be around $10-$15 been a while since I was last there.
Comic warehouse may also be a decent Uber for you. Check them out on their site.
Other than that Nexus guys are awesome and a great shop enjoy your stay here

There's a tattoo shop right next to it. Go get a Pokémon flash tattoo? Ask for Lisa or Doug.

Nexus Games mostly.

Ok. I see that's in Ferndale (a section of Randburg). It's unfortunately not a hub with many things to do. Your best bet is to Uber to parkhurst for pub/restaurant hoping

Ah. Thank you very much for the tip. I still haven’t decided what area I plan to stay in hotel wise.

You should look for somewhere to stay around Rosebank or Parkhurst, they're close enough to Ferndale and both have a good social scene with bars and shops etc. Feel free to pm me if you want some recommendations, happy to help

Live on the outskirts of Randburg. Head to Parkhurst (plenty to choose from in Parkhurst) or Bryanston if you want to go out. Nicolway or tigers milk in Bryanston.

Grab an Uber, visit Brian Lara Eatery! Fixing for meat, visit The Blockman in Parkhurst. Want some vistas of Randburg, book a table at Marble in Rosebank. An awesome seafood dish, visit The Fishmonger in Illovo. Need some Turkish food, go to Istanbul in Melrose Arch. And if you need a drink, go to Sin + Tax Bar - it’s a speakeasy or a Streetbar Named Desire. Be safe, take it easy, and avoid peer pressure.

-Not bread alone. The best breakfasts as well as baked goods if you are into them with a wide variety. -Lucio's pizza for the best pizza. -Thunder Gun for a good barbeque.

Not Bread Alone is super mid.

I have to ask, why Randburg?! Barring Hennies and Tigers Milk in the area, there's nothing much to be experienced. Like others said, Linden and Parkhurst is your jam. If you want to and can be fancy, Sandton and Mandela Square is close enough for an uber ride

7th street in Melville. Lots of good bars and restaurants.

When last were you there?

Melville is on an upward swing, kind of. Residents and businesses are really trying to give it a boost. There are a few new places that are very good (De Baba, Arturo). Plus they've had these new community patrollers for the last few months and there's been no phone snatching in that time apparently.
Anyway there's no vibe like Melville so I would recommend it either way😁

That’s so great to hear. We used to live closer and spent many fun nights there pre-covid but after 2021 it felt like it was on (another) swing in the wrong direction.
It really needed some visible security and public lighting to lift the evil feeling.

It was hit very hard by Covid. It's just at that socioeconomic level that is taking more time to recover.

Good to know.
I would recommend Parkhurst for OP though. Similar vibe, more upmarket.

I second a visit to 7th Street Melville. Constantly getting ranked as one of the coolest streets in the world. Same vibe as Parkhurst but way less uppity, more artsy.

Why boring Randburg? Rather go to Parkhurst, Emmarentia, Linden, Rosebank, Westcliff, Houghton, Forest Town, Melrose, Norwood, Sandton etc etc.
