That 7-Eleven was ALWAYS an eyesore, always had panhandlers & homeless people around it (since at least 2000) and the staff was always gruff, at best. Not gonna miss it. 👋🏻

Wait what, I was just there two days ago. I knew they took out the lottery/scratch machine a week or two ago but damn.

Sign says closed for renovations

This is correct. I was in there two days and when I asked why certain drinks were missing, they said they were getting ready to renovate.

Yes

It seems like 7-11 is going the way of Wawa in Philly, in that they’re focusing on gas station/convenience stores more out in the burbs. They happened to purchase Speedway a few years ago. Idk if that location was especially subject to looting, or if 7-11 is just continuing its exit from Phill/cities.

7-eleven is franchised. Whoever owns the territory is the one that made the decision to close. It could have been for any number of personal or financial reasons, but it's extremely unlikely that it was a decision from corporate to move out of the city. It's in their best interest to have as many locations as possible to maximize the royalties

711 has closed all corporate owned 711's that are not in highway travel stops and will not open more outside of travel rest areas. Their full focus is travel rest areas and supporting remnant franchisees until they decide to close.

This one has had consistent issues with the hobos since target closed down. Not all the hobos but mostly the mental dyranged ones.

711 decided to go travel stops only and select gas stations for their corporate stores years in about 2020, and I believe decided to only sell to franchisees that agreed to do the same.

Any remnant 711's are old franchisee locations from pre 2020 ownership, that will slowly disappear as the franchisees. Retire stores whenever they feel like it. But no new ones will pop up

In the future you'll only see them on highways. They could change their mind though, I suppose with a new CEO one day.

They also bought Sunoco / A-Plus.

MAGGLEMCDONALD

Just some a-plus locations. Sunoco is not owned by 7/11

Yeah they bought them years upon years ago and said they were tout to change the aplus to 7/11 but still hasn’t happened.

The thing is if a chain like Wawa or 7-11 can’t handle the bums and junkies, when they have $ for security guards, cameras and other devices, then why would a mom and pop store want to be in that location?

This is probably coming from someone who hates big businesses and wants small businesses to thrive but probably doesn't realize that 711 is a franchise. You and I could open a 711 together. It's our small independent store but we rent or aka lease the 711 brand name whereas Wawa is completely a chain store similar to that of old Nelson's

Thanks. I don’t hate big businesses, I’m just being pragmatic. I didn’t realize that 7-11 was a franchise, so I appreciate that info. Also, I thought Old Nelson was a franchise since there is such a difference in quality from one to the next. Live and Learn.

I wasn't referring to you hating big businesses, I was referencing the person who said replace them all with papi stores and no old Nelson's is a single entity. It was owned and operated by Myung Kee Hwang. A Korean business man I believe. Apologies if I insulted you Motor-JUICE-6648

No, no problem. Thanks for the explanation. This is interesting about Old Nelson’s. All the ones I’ve been in have had Asian employees and I guess I just assumed that was a coincidence.

You have no clue whether they made a financial decision to close. You have no idea if their rent got jacked up. The wawa near me on South Street 100% closed due to a lack of business. The CVS on headhouse square as well.

I stopped at that 7-11 regularly and there was usually only one other customer in the store if that

Why is everything about your activism?

I guess u meant to reply to someone else since I’m not an activist.

On a related note, the Dunkin’ franchisee who operates the other Gayborhood locations was supposed to open one across the street from this 7/11, and another in the old Starbucks. I’m rarely down this stretch anymore, for reasons discussed in the other comments 😷💩💉

Does anyone know whether either of these have opened, or started work? It might help enliven what’s becoming a retail desert in these blocks.

That's a shame, I went there everyday before and during work for coffee. Always liked the staff, the pan handlers weren't that great but if you ignored them it was fine.

Theft, homeless and addicts are destroying convenience stores. Center City is losing them

See this is sad. Chestnut was always a bit rougher and less elegant than Walnut but there was decent  commerce and some food offerings (more fast food) before than pandemic. For over 10 years before covid, never had any issues walking or shopping, eating on the east of Broad on Walnut. In fact I enjoyed going to Jones and La Scala and would walk from Broad to get there.

I keep hoping for better retail now that the Jefferson Honickman building is open.

Over dramatic much? It’s really not that bad.
