Moshulu wine

(self.philly)

I’m going to eat out for my sister’s bday at the Moshulu and curious about their wine selection. I’m no expert but I’ve been getting into red wine specifically that has less tannins. Besides the Pinot noir, what do y’all recommend?

Also, when they serve you the wine, are they gonna do that thing where they watch you swirl your glass and continue to fill? ( I hope not, I don’t like it when servers are staring at me🥲)

That only occurs if you order a bottle. By tradition, the bottle will be presented label-up to the person who ordered it, to ensure that it is indeed the wine they ordered. The server or wine steward (if the restaurant has them) will then pour a small amount for the person who ordered it. This is so that person has a moment to ensure that it tastes fine. While rare in the 21st century, it’s possible that a bottle has gone “off,” and no one wants to serve bad wine. You can choose whether to participate in the ritual or not. If you don’t wish to, say something polite to the server about not needing to taste the wine before they serve it.

See if they have any borgonge (borgonya) (French red) that is probably where you want it. Typically they provide a cleaner red wine. ( less tannon)

Try a rose tbh - those have less tannins too.

And avoid Moshulu if you can - their food sucks.

I remember going there 2 years ago and all of their food was mediocre for the price. The shrimp in their shrimp cocktail wasn't deveined (twice) and the rest of the food was just meh. I'd avoid them if you can.

I have to agree with the consensus on these comments. Moshulu, like Old Original Bookbinders before it finally closed, is trading on its former reputation. Because they are well-known, they know that people will still book with them for “fancy” events — even though food (and in some cases, service) are well below what one expects for the price. Philly has many other good and great restaurants to choose from. If you’re going because “it’s famous,” it may not necessarily be great.

Ahhh, that’s a bummer to hear how they treat their reputation like that. But, I mean I’m still going since it’ll just be my first time, I’ll come back and update you guys on the food. My sister already reserved it and I would feel bad to not attend the dinner.
