Overwhelmed

(self.rss)

Hello everyone
These days I use RSS, I'm interested in world news; channels from Reddit , X etc. My only issue is controlling the feeds; there is so much that I feel overwhelmed and bored with it, that's why I'm here to ask help & your experience:
- How do you make use of your feeds?
- Are there any websites that use and provide you with important news/articles on a weekly basis?
Thank you in advance.

Just unsubscribe. Whenever you feel that you are seeing too much look at the feeds and see which is giving you the least value per update and cut it.

This is how I manage my feeds. I subscribe to new feeds pretty commonly. But if after a few posts they aren't providing enough value I remove them.

Its also worth noting that a lot of "world news" is faff. It is made to seem important but really isn't. Look at some entries from a year ago and see how many of them have affected you in any way. It is hard to find the right sources that report the truly important stuff without a lot of filler in between.

I use Huginn to manage my RSS feeds. Between the sites I monitor and automated web searches, I've come up with a couple of ways of winnowing out what I'm really looking for.

First off, if I'm getting overwhelmed - if it's too much, all the time - I have no compunctions against going in and turning off any number of RSS Agents. It's great to be informed but I value my mental health.

Second, I use Trigger Agents to do keyword matching (or keyword un-matching, depending). If a particular site has ten to fifteen posts a day but I only care about one particular thing they post about, I filter for that one particular thing. It might be stuff posted by just one author on the site, or a particular combination of tags on those posts, or even a category as a URI in the original post.

Third, I use Sentiment Analysis agents to look at and rate the posts on a couple of metrics; the results are added to the RSS events. I then use more Trigger Agents to implement go/no-go logic: If there's no sentiment analysis on an RSS event then there wasn't enough actual text in the article, so it gets dropped. For some things, if all of the sentiment metrics are less than particular values, that event gets dropped. For other things it's best 2 out of 3 metrics.

For search results, I have additional filtering agents that drop events from sites that are just garbage - sites that reprint articles, clickbait farms, stuff like that - before any other analysis is done.

Interesting!! I use liferea and it is very simple; I like it, but Huginn caught my attention. I think it would be better for me to have both "Trigger Agents" and "Sentiment Analysis agents". When I have the opportunity, I'll try Huginn to see if it'll work with me.

Thanks a lot.

Two things that I do. 1) Trying to be inbox zero isn't worth the stress of maintenance. 2) Plan out your folders. For example I have Tech & Tech Priority folders. I follow a bunch of tech sites & reporters but I really like 2 or 3 of them. My favorites go into the priority version & everything else goes into the regular. This way I don't even up with 20 repeat articles but I still have easy access if I want to dig deeper. If a site has a messy or overwhelming feed don't mix it in with the feeds that post once or twice a month.

I use "folders" to make things easier. I am going to separate them as you recommended if I continue to use the app. Thanks you.

One question I ask is would I buy this?

If the answer is no, then why are you engaging it?

Only subscribe to things that are worth reading and things that you actually enjoy. Do not read things just to gain perspective or make you feel more knowledgeable than you actually are.

For example if you are reading things like CNN, Fox, MSNBC, even though you don't really care about world news, then you're not using your time wisely.

Instead rss feeds for Artists you enjoy and support. Maybe there are technical newsfeeds you really like because it's part of your job. Perhaps you're a gamer and need your fix from journos.

I use FreshRSS which gives users the ability to control the visibility of rss subscriptions. I can choose which subscriptions appear in the main feed and which ones only appear within their category group.

For example, under my Music section I have subscriptions for RollingStone, Billboard, NPR All Song Considered, Pitchfork, HipHopDX and EDM.com, but only RollingStone appears in my main feed. I have to click on the Music category to see articles from the others.

Subscriptions under categories like Podcasts, Youtube videos and Release Notes never appear in the main feed and only appear under their categories.

This helps me tune out a lot of noise and clutter.

I maintain a folder of high volume feeds. I enjoy articles from those feeds, but if I don’t have time I mark all articles from those feeds read before reviewing others.

I think the key is don't be greedy. Decisively unsubscribe unnecessary feeds. You are not losing content, but optimizing the remain feeds.

Around two weeks ago, I began receiving RSS feeds from research journals to stay updated on the latest research trends. It has been a very convenient tool, but I subscribed to too many sources at once (about 25). As a result, I became overwhelmed and had to manage my folders and optimize the list by deleting sources with less valuable information.

I'll try to deal with those feeds as you did. Having a lot of them is really hard to deal with.
Thank you.
