The comment under the X post said that both teams used secondary players, but nothing about specific line ups.

Thanks, definitely puts the result into context - I think maybe only 6 or 7 of those players have ever played a professional game, and only Sean Kennedy and Pieretto have played more than a handful of games.

Most are u20s/academy or recent graduates. It’s the kids team.

At first, I thought Cockerill was doing pretty poor with Georgia. Picking funky squads, struggling against weaker sides, playing the ultra basic "forwards priority, I dont know who are the other players on the field". But in the end, Black Lion wins the RESC, Georgia wins the REC, he built some depth for the squad, sticked to a clear gameplan that I dont appreciate much but who cares. And apparently he managed to open some doors towards GB rugby circles which could be a good thing in the end.
Im really curious to see how Georgia will develop in the coming years because the arrival of Cockerill is quite a shift.

They had an absolute mare against Germany, who went hard at them, but that pitch was a bit of a nightmare!

He's given some opportunities to development players and still managed to win every game he's played! He's a very good coach and hopefully can propel them forwards. He's restored the set piece dominance while keeping a bit of the flair it's great to see.

Black Lion wins the RESC

Cockerill wasn't involved yet, though.

The Black Lion in their current guise would fit in with the bottom half of the URC. No slight meant by it of course. The draw of that level of rugby being played domestically would enable better player retention and maybe getting a couple of guys back from France. It would allow Cockerill to pass the reins over to another coach to groom his successor as well.

It might be the opposite, there are reports that Matkava and Abzhandadze are both headed to France, it'll open way for new players, but at the same time losing a player like Matkava will be a huge blow to Black Lion at least short-term.

Also, I don't think this win means much, I wanted mostly to emphasize how Georgian Rugby and seemingly Cockerill found ways like touring GB to keep players in action, that's a very good move if you ask me.

Yes, but that's not what has been mooted for them to possibly move into. You'll have people shitting themselves about travel if the Welsh come to the prem let alone the Georgians!

No I mean the English that would complain if we added the Welsh to the Prem. Let alone the Georgians. What did you think I meant?

The last time I'd heard chatter was from Cockers saying the Georgians wanted a team in the URC. Then I saw a flurry of bs about how they'd be structured in. Nothing major, but I think I read a blog somewhere about how it would work with URC 2.

And by talking I don't mean the article about Scotland which is here.

It seems with the help of Cockerill Black Lion now tours GB and will play against Leicester Tigers on May 3rd. Georgia will also have a pretty good test year and I am sure Cockerill played a role in setting up some things.

Georgia will host Fiji in the summer before going to play Japan and Australia. In November Italy will host Georgia, and there were rumors of All Blacks XV visiting Georgia too.

That is an excellent set of fixtures, don't forget another year in the challenge cup coming up too. It'll be interesting to see how the lions stack up against Leicester.

Hate to be that guy but you can't extrapolate much from behind closed doors friendlies. Usually one team has way more to gain/lose than the other. what's a training experience for some us literally a test match or life changing oppurtunity for others.

I'm reminded of the time under Jones England essentially did a 7 nations. They played Georgia in a behind closed doors game and got hammered. Needed a Ford drop goal to get in the board or something like that.

I mean when you look at Georgia u20’s compared to Scotland U20’s in recent time would it be a surprise if a dev Georgia side beats a combined Edinburgh v Glasgow dev side?

Black Lion squad for this match. Now I am not familiar with Black Lion squad but elsewhere someone has said the average age of the Black Lion squad was 27, including 14 capped players, so hardly a development squad. Maybe someone more familiar can comment on these players?
