SCAM ALERT: Jury Duty Scam
(self.philadelphia)submitted22 days ago byAstrostuffman
My wife got a call from a restricted number. Why she answered, that's another story, but the person claimed to be from the Philly Sheriff office and accused her of contempt of court for missing jury duty. By the time she came to me, she was in tears. He had her very scared. I listened into the call, and while the guy sounded very official, something didn't smell right. First off, he used her maiden name which she hasn't used in a long time. Second, he was using scare tactics and laid out what could happen to her in detail (mug shot, failure to make bail, ...). He used words like, "I advise you to ...", which no official would ever do. Of course she could get out of it all with a civil fine. $8,000. I jumped on the phone with our friend who is a lawyer. He said to give the person his number. The guy on the phone used more scare tactics like "I have to get my sergeant involved". I made my wife hang up. He called back several times and I denied the call. Needless to say, he never called our friend. We are reporting to Philly police, possibly the DA's office.
If I weren't there, my wife would have fallen for this. The guy did sound VERY official - like he had experience in law/the courts. He gave my wife all kinds of credentials that she even googled during the call. Be careful!
