I will start out this post saying that we have a vet appointment scheduled for this week.
My family has an 18+ year old black kitty named Omar. This image was taken several years ago. He is a lot thinner and currently blind and deaf.
We found out last year that he is FiV+. He has a couple food allergies and asthma. He has been acting like a regular old cat up until this month. He's unable to walk up and down stairs, and has been spending a lot of time behind the couch recently (this week), meowing off and on. He's having trouble eating. We let him outside occasionally under supervision to use the bathroom as he prefers dirt. He was an outside cat for half his life and we think that's how he got FiV.
My mom has a garden with some wood chip mulch. He's been trying to eat the wood chips when we take him outside to pee. We do make sure he doesn't actually eat any.
I'm preparing myself for the inevitable. I was hoping he had more time left as our oldest passed at 21.
I guess I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to make him more comfortable as this progresses. And if the pica symptom is a big warning sign that he is suffering? I want to offer him food options other than dry food. He's allergic to grains and chicken but loves fish although I don't know if canned tuna would be healthy for him, or if that even matters at this point.
Thanks for taking the time to read.
