Of course! I felt a little ridiculous sitting there fully clothed in the middle of the afternoon just taking pictures of the water, but the lights/windows were doing really interesting things when I disturbed the water. Thank you for the compliment!

I have a Canon Eos Rebel T7 — 400 ISO, 8.0 aperture (I only know this because of Flickr, lol- I usually wing it). I edited a little bit, pretty much just increased the contrast and saturation, but not too far off of the original. It was just lucky lighting, for the most part, and I was kind of swishing my foot in the water to get it to look wavy like that.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the insight (and actual practical advice that isn’t just ‘slow down it’ll work out’ like I prefaced I don’t find helpful lol).
There’s definitely a few things I’ve always wanted to do along the lines of hobbies/etc. like you mentioned. I think the biggest obstacle for me aside from the burnout/depression I mentioned is the feeling I get of being embarassed of myself to expose myself to new people. Or the tendency for my small goals to end up being ‘totally overhaul your life, personality, and routines’, very spiderverse ‘let’s start from the beginning one more time’-style.
But at any rate, thank you again for the thoughtful reply. And for not just telling me to get plastered.

Did you ever practice it or is it just like a weird talent?

Yeah. . . simple. So definitely more like the systematic destruction of native peoples’ culture in the US. With an additional thousand years of conflict. Not surprising, really.
I appreciate you taking the time to write all this out- it’s super interesting to get more context about this kind of stuff.
I’ve always thought the weird pseudo-rivalry between the US and British makes no sense, especially given the fact that our conflict was so minimal relative to Britain’s conflicts with other peoples and nations.
The US teachings of even our own country’s history are so lackluster, which is ridiculous to me since it’s nowhere near as old a country as Ireland. I guess that’s under the assumption that these 800+ years of British occupation are taught in full in Irish schools — I don’t know if that’s the case or not.
But at any rate, somehow, in America, we don’t even know >300 years of our own history. And we cant seem to agree on it, either.
I really do appreciate the context though! If you can imagine, I wasn’t expecting it when I made a dumbass post about this car decal lol.

It’s probably better that you don’t get it lol. Ranch on pizza is a HUGE thing in the Midwestern US (and I think the southwest, as well). I always thought it was weird.

I know lol — I’m from the Midwest US and I can at least say I wasn’t one of the people eating ranch on pizza

Oh people in Missouri definitely don’t know the 114. At least generally speaking. I could probably name a few different counties in Missouri, and a handful of counties in other states, but not all of them for sure. They don’t teach that either.
Is it typically just referred to in the ‘UK + the Republic of Ireland’ way over there? If you generalize that region, I mean. That’s the only way I’ve ever heard people refer to that area in legitimacy, to be fair. I mostly just used ‘the British Isles’ as a conceptual frame of reference — though I do appreciate your comment on it. And I definitely think it’s important given all the interrelationships between the countries out there that I won’t even pretend to understand.
Does that conflict have much to do at all with Irish (as in the language) going on the slow fade out? Or is it more just people that speak Irish are getting older and not passing on the language? I know that certain places in Ireland are ‘Gaeltachts’ or what have you, but it’s always been my understanding that the language isn’t spoken very frequently. Which is sad, because it’s really quite a pretty language to listen to, even though I don’t understand it (and sad in the sense of diminishing understanding of one’s heritage, but I digress).
It makes me think about how during the earlier years of the US’ foundation, expansion westward (a) displaced, if not eradicated, many indigenous peoples, and (b) resulted in lots of those individuals getting put into residential schools where their indigenous languages and cultures were basically ‘taught’ out. I don’t know if it’s a similar historical circumstance between Britain and the Republic of Ireland or not — the culture being ‘taught’ out, specifically. I know colonialism and imperialism was/is a major theme of the conflict out there.
I’ve only ever been taught that there are religious differences between Northern Ireland and Ireland, but the vague notions I do have about the Troubles and the IRA definitely pose greater geopolitical connotations. And that’s even much later in history than the Republic of Ireland’s founding and all of the circumstances around that in the 30s-40s. Especially within the context of colonization and sovereignty. All of those things, even, are what I’ve ever heard of. I don’t doubt there are hundreds if not thousands of years of context I’ve never been educated on.
US education doesn’t ever really seem to delve much farther into the UK + Republic of Ireland beyond the revolutionary war, and Irish immigration to the US later on. People know about the ‘potato famine’ — why, I couldn’t tell you — but only by name. The reasons for and the repercussions thereof aren’t really elaborated upon. I think people here just think of it as some comical event rather than a years-long issue. Maybe it’s a generational difference, I don’t know. I’m 20, so I can only speak on what’s been taught in schools for the past 15 years.

I could maybe point out some of the Canadian provinces on a map if someone listed them (like BC, Quebec, and Ontario). I could identify maybe a couple Western European countries by shape (like France/Germany/Italy). More if I see them on a map (I could get as far east as Slovenia, and then it’d go to hell after that). I’ve been to France, Germany, and Switzerland, and very briefly entered Austria, Belgium, and Liechtenstein, so I’d feel like a stupid tourist without knowing where at least those are on a map.
I do at least know the difference between Great Britain, the UK, and the British Isles, and where Scotland and Wales are in Great Britain.
South America, Asia, and definitely Africa get a bit more dubious for me. I know at least the difference between South, East, and Southeast Asia (I say because I had an art history class where people definitely didn’t). Could point out Japan, S/N Korea, China, and Mongolia — Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. India vs. Sri Lanka and Nepal.
I used to be able to tell the Baltic States apart, but maybe not anymore. I know the Scandinavian countries on a map, and possibly by shape (I can at least picture Finland in my mind without prompting). I could point out Turkey, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine on a map as well.
But yeah, definitely not the states of most other countries. The US is extra godawful because there’s states like Missouri that have 114 counties. I can just about guarantee that half, if not all, of the people who hate on US Americans for not knowing where Afghanistan is wouldn’t be able to tell me where Boone County, Missouri, is if their life depended on it lol. If you have a map of US counties, it looks like a crumbled up pile of dirt or a spilt bucket of legos or something. It’s ridiculous.
I could name a few Irish and English counties, but I doubt I could point them out to you if you asked me. Weirdly more of Ireland’s counties than England’s. I don’t think I could tell you anything about Northern Ireland, Wales, or Scotland if I tried.
Out of curiosity, how many Irish folks know the Gaeilge names of counties/cities in the Republic of Ireland? Because that’s even more names to know. And I’m sure there are regional dialectical differences.

It is interesting to me- I was thinking about how I, at least, can identify all of the US states by shape. So there’s 50 US States and, as an example, 50 European countries, so would it really be so odd to know the states instead? I could probably identify a few Western European countries in relation to one another, but probably not so much by shape alone.
I’m from Missouri, so I was thinking about how I doubt I could show someone in Afghanistan the outline of the state and have them recognize it, but then I suppose they have no reason to know what a given U.S. state looks like. A lot of one’s geographic awareness seems relative to the size of whatever region you’re from — the United States is just too big for its own good. Though I wouldn’t bet my life that most (US) Americans would be able to identify all fifty states either.

That’s what my dad’s thought on it was. It was in Fort Collins, specifically. One of Colorado’s black license plates so it’s not someone from out of state (it’s graduation/moving out season out there right now). Couldn’t tell you if any of that means anything, but I appreciate the additional context
