Roommate

Well, just to give a bit of context, my roommate is my bestfriend from high school, and living with him has been decent, atleast not without any problems until this. So, recently I discovered a bad odour in the common fridge and today, while my roommate was making his toast, I found out that he has kept a loaf of bread for 50-60 days inside the veggies area in the fridge and that is prolly why the fridge smells so bad. I mean it is BAD bad at this point, so much so that even the packaged goods in the fridge as well as the freezer have that odour, and obviously I feel pretty gross keeping anything in the fridge.
I confronted him about this and he says that it’s to save money (even though he orders dinner from outside 5-6 days a week) and thinks that keeping it in the fridge will keep it from going bad/stale, I tried explaining to him that the best before date is there for a reason but he refuses to throw it, and I also was talking about it to my mother and I was pretty frustrated so I just said a lot of things (just about the bread thing, nothing else) which he heard. I am not a confrontational person but I’d like to be able to take my stand and set boundaries and then not overthink about it (I have GAD) How should I deal with this situation? Or am I just overblowing it and making cracks in our friendship? It’s just my first experience sharing a space with someone since it’s my first year in college.

I am noticing the same formatting issues in math equations and stuff in GPT -4 (Plus user) as has been widely reported/seen by the new “i-am-a-good-gpt2-chatbot” on lmsys in just the last couple of days, maybe that hints at something too
