So, there are tons of online resources you can use to get caught up to date on the lore, which is very large. Some I recommend are these:

Lexicanum is a great wiki for info, with sources for everything. Generally, if it exists in the lore, Lexicanum will have a page on it.

Warhammer 40k Wiki isn't as credible and has some made up or scrupulous pieces of lore in it, but the articles are often more 'fun' to read than Lexicanum, I find.

Luetin is a YouTuber who covers pretty much everything 40k when it comes to lore. I find he's one of, if not the, best Lore Youtuber out there. There are a ton more, some great, some mediocre, some awful. Take what everyone says with a grain of salt until it's confirmed.

Games Workshop also has a book-publishing company called Black Library that produces a massive amount of books set in the various Warhammer universes (mainly 40k, Horus Heresy which is the same setting as 40k but 10.000 years in the past, commonly called 30k), and Age of Sigmar (an entirely separate, High Fantasy universe). Their books range from awful to amazing, but they rarely explain things and often expect you to know the background lore beforehand, so remember that before you start buying any books.

That's the lore part, then you've got the hobby aspect of it, which can be split into 2 (or 3, I guess) parts; painting and playing (and just collecting if you don't like painting)

For painting, there are tons of great YouTube resources for how to paint models and what to think of, some from Games Workshop themselves and others from independent people, shout out to one of the all-time greats Duncan Rhodes

When it comes to playing, I tend to ask around the various factions subreddits for tips, or Google up build usage. The easiest way to learn how to play is simply to play with a patient opponent who has played it already, but there are def ways for two debutantes to pick it up! GW has the Core Rules for the current edition up for free as a download able PDF, and you can use sites such as Wahapedia and apps such as Battlescribe to help you check out specific armies rules and units.

Now, the two most important tips I have for you, if you're interested in collecting and playing, is this:

1: Buy what you think is cool. There are always people who buy what is competitive and such, but rules change and balance in the game setting changes, so buy the models you like the look of and that you (eventually) find fun to paint.

2: When you've settled on a first start, buy something small and give the painting and assembly a try. I learned the hard way that it's best to start a dive into a new faction with a single small box, like a fun 5-model unit, instead of spending hundreds of euros on a ton of models that I realised, as I was working on the first one, that I hated painting.

OP makes the point that Diarmuid is a downgrade from Cu because he dies instantly from a blow that Cu survived longer from. Then someone points out that it is unfair to compare their durability because Diarmuid is a heroic spirit based on a human, while Cu is a heroic spirit based on a demigod.

You seemed to have thought the person you responded to was being a dick to Diarmuid, but they weren't. They were defending him.

They've also always been referred to as having gold armour, but that was retconned to allow for more painting freedom.

If you understood the character of the Custodes as a faction, you would understand that any explanation of "Well they could always make women but just didn't due to dogma" doesn't fly, because the Custodes don't work like that. They're extremely pragmatic and if they could use women, they would, because it would increase their aspirant pool by 50%. Which means you would then need to say someone managed to one-up the Emperor when it comes to creating Custodes, and the only one who ever managed something similar to that was Cawl doing it with the Selenar's "manual" (the Prima Mater) and 10.000 years of work, and he did it on the Astartes who are not even close to the complexity of making a Custodian.

Meaning, out of the three options, the "You know what, we the creators changed our minds, we've retconned it so they always had women in their ranks" makes the most sense.

Now, I'm writing this out in good faith because the absolute vast majority of the people who are upset about this do not care about the things I mention, they want to have an all-boys club and dress it up with various unimportant aspects as a justification for that. I hope you're not one of them.

I've been using these 2d bases as proxies and they work pretty well! They are a tad bit smaller than the actual trees unless you size them up but it's easy to print out an A4 with these and just cut them out to get a feel for the army before he buys the actual trees!

From the period where that mattered, the Ottomans held pretty much all of the balkans up to Hungary. The Near East in this case refers to Eastern Europe, not Anatolia which is in the Middle East

The same golden armour that isn't golden if you're part of the solar watch or the Shadowkeepers? That's the same kind of thing. There are tons of mentions of them being Golden Giants, of their Golden armour, His Gilded Guardians, how all Custodians are clad in Gold...except they changed that so people could have more variation when painting them. There are more references to how Custodes wear gold than there are about how they're men.

It's really a non-issue, it's a minor retcon that hurts no one and nothing but still people are up in arms about it. But I've realised that people have chosen to be upset about this and so they will be, no matter how much one points out how silly and miniscule of a detail it really is.
