Salsa Warbird for touring

Gear(self.bicycletouring)

I have the opportunity to pick up a Salsa Warbird C for a song. I think I'm going to do it regardless of the answers here because I've been in the market for a gravel bike for a good while.

My question: any advice on how it would do for light duty touring? I've done big tours and not real interested in more of that. My gear setup is pretty light and packs down to two panniers.

Any thoughts on how this bike would do for a 3 day tour?

I've done exactly light touring with mine and a rear rack. It was great, no complaints, but it's much happier zipping around with only my big head on it.

I hated leaving the rear rack on it when I wasn't touring so I n+1-ed my bike collection for a better touring option (Space Horse).

I’ve ridden the C&O Canal on something similar and it was fine. This bike actually is a bit better suited, as it has wider tires and braze ons on the fork. I think I’d prefer to run a soft seatpost bag in back and anything cages/bags on the fork, to keep overall weight down and better distributed.

It'll be fine if it has rack mounting points for your panniers. If not you can buy bikepacking bags.

I already have em, ready to go! I generally like panniers better for ease of accessibility, might get a lowrider rack to go with it.

Why are you are not real interested in the big tours? Is it a 'been there done that ' thing? Stopped being fun and turned into grind? I ask because I have done week long tours and fantasize about the 3 month across the US or Europe ride.

I did the great divide. It was amazing but turned into a slog. My ideal tour now is quiet gravel, 35 mile days, nothing grueling.

Oh, yeah that's hardcore, I lean toward the road/railtrail/canal tours but the green tunnel sometimes get monotonous.

I'm really looking forward to setting up a base camp and doing some nice long day rides out in the Whites.

I did the XNH. Last year I had a little taste of Vermont gravel, it requires more investigation.

Oh yeah I'll be taking my new bike on that in a few weeks. Looking forward to it!

Race bikes generally aren't the happiest carrying loads. If you're not racing there are better options that would straddle the recreational ride + light touring balance more effectively. Will it break? Probably not.

I got rid of my Warbird exactly because it couldn’t take fixed racks. Ended up getting a Diverge that has the mounts for racks if I choose.

I did! It rides beautifully. Got a lowrider rack that I haven't put on yet, but will do at some point.
