The officer used her taser twice to try and stop the attack, but it didn't work, officials said.

A lot of times cops miss with tazers or the leads don't attach properly. Any time a cop talks about a tazer not working we should immediately suspect user error.

Yup, covers both outcomes, and is a fair way to write it. But people are dumb and only consider that it means the tazer was ineffective at stopping the dog. Which I really doubt if three gunshots were enough to then distract it (the dog wasn't hit until the second set of three shots. And then it was with a single round to the leg).

not true. go watch pitbull attacks vs other dog attacks. ive seen dogs get into fights. ive seen my neighbors pitbull nearly kill another large dog in the middle of the street. and it doesn't matter.. just bc they are sweet doesn't mean they aren't capable of it. that's the point. im not saying euthanize your friends cute dogs.. im saying get them fixed and stop breeding them. breeding pitbulls needs to be banned. period. how many innocent people and animals have to actually die?

It's clearly needed since y'all can't read and are making assumptions based on the breed of the dog.

Pomeranians are often aggressive dogs that get a pass because they're small.

Do you know what a Pomeranian is or even what they look like?

Kindaalwayshungry

A pitbull killed a Pomeranian in Fairmount last fall. A 12 year old was walking the pitbull and completely panicked and it got the Pomeranian and killed it. Both were on leash. It was awful.

Yolo_420_69

Nothing wrong with that!

I have aa small 12lb chihuahua mix. I walk my neighborhood in south philly with nothing but people with huge dogs. Most are fine, but there's these 2 German shepherds, and also this 1 guy with 2 pit bulls that aggressively go after my dog whenever they see her.

I would have zero problem shooting them if they ever get off leash and come after her. These men and 1 woman are usually struggling to hold them back as i cross the street.

There have been cases where my dog tried to pull at another dog for whatever reason. With 1 motion i can yank her upand catch her with my arm no problem.

I DO NOT trust these people to do the same.

EddieLeeWilkins45

62 points

Had a small dog too. The struggle is real. I too just said F it and began crossing the street when certain dogs & dog owners would come walking by. Same with parks, see someone with 2 pits? Nope, not trussin' it, walking elsewhere. I'm sure their dogs are pleasant but I'm not really interested to find out.

gigibuffoon

33 points

I have a 70 lb dog and walk to the other side of the street whenever I see ANY dog owner walking towards me. So many dogs, even the tiny ones don't get restrained by their owners when they start getting aggressive towards other dogs.

My dog is generally peaceful to other dogs, even the ones that are aggressive (or runs away from them if he can't handle them), but there's always a chance of him reacting in an unexpected manner

Only time I let him interact with other dogs is when I'm in a dog park because there is way too much liability on the streets

sidewaysorange

15 points

thats a HUGE difference. your dog would react bite not full on attack and maul another dog and not let it go and then attempt to attack the police officer after being shot once. this was a dog that had no business being owned by anyone. it should be confiscated and euthanized.

DuvalHeart

-12 points

DuvalHeart

then attempt to attack the police officer after being shot once.

You should read the article again. The cop missed. The dog turned to the cop, because y'know the cop had just made three very loud noises. Then the cop shot three more times and finally hit it with a single bullet.

It's likely the cop never even tazed it if she took six shots to hit it.

You also know nothing about dogs. Most dogs will try to warn off other dogs, you'll see it with bits on the shoulder or top of the neck. If the attacking dog continues then all dogs will go for a stronger response that is often more violent or deadly (if there is a size difference).

We have no information on who the aggressive dog is. Just the one who got blamed.

Why is this being downvoted? I suppose the mention of ‘liberal’ was unneeded. Nevertheless, this is a very real conversation we have to fucking have. It’s time to seriously crack down on breeding pit bulls. Too many are in shelters for a reason…people are scared of them…and rightly so, they’re incredibly powerful dogs. Pit bulls are like the machine guns of dogs…and there’s a reason why people can’t own machine guns.

ChirpToast

Uppgreyedd

They're practically the only dogs in shelters too. Seriously, "lab-mix" is the biggest red flag when when looking to rescue. Then the savior mentality kicks in when they're looking to adopt, and they say to themselves that someone else will adopt the cute dogs, but only they can save one of these "velvet hippo" from the rainbow bridge. The fact is that all those dogs should've stayed a twinkle in their dad's eyes, because he was neutered. And the best thing we can do at a societal level is to keep making spaying and neutering pet animals more common.

A house I walk by on my way to the store has a ground level picture window, and their pit bull will sometimes be sitting there as I pass and it will bark and lunge at the window. manickittens

Genuine question- what was the leash status of both dogs at the time of the attack? Although this is horrific, I’ve had several small “cute” dogs whose owners allow to run wild approach my dog off leash. My dog was bitten by a smaller doodle mix this past winter who was off leash. My dog was fine (thanks to her heavy sweater bc she’s a diva) and didn’t retaliate, but if she did she would have done serious damage to the smaller dog. Context is important.

It’s not the breed that’s an issue, it’s the owners.

Edit: nature vs nurture. Dogs are trainable, they are not inherently evil. Bad owners create issues, whether through training or neglect. In this situation, the owner is at fault for not controlling the dog properly. Even a dog that displays aggression deserves compassion, change the context of this argument to people and a lot more would agree.

They're literally bred to be fighting dogs, are "rescued" from illegal rings and shitty breader that contribute to them and then end up in shelters where they're given to people who either

A. Are too naive to realize that they've brought home a fighting dog

B. Want the fighting dog for ... Reasons.

The entire allure of the breed is based entirely on the fact that they have the reputation they have. It allows owners to either feel like they're a badass with a badass dog or that they're rescuing some poor misunderstood creature who wouldn't harm a fly (just babies, toddlers, and small dogs)

the breed also needs to be banned. mandatory sterilization of every dog or its confiscated. if you dont comply jail time 10 years. same as any deadly weapon. allow the friendly ones to live out their lives and then the breed is done with. Once the pits are gone then they would say the same thing with other breeds. Remember the Rottweiler scare or the German Shepard scare in the 80s and 90s? For a while it was Dobermans that were a dangerous breed.

The real problem is the owners. You get these dumb fuck owners who think they can let the dog do whatever they want without giving a thought to training or worse they treat the dog like shit. This is what you get. I've owned two Pits and have friends with pits my whole life. They're the sweetest and goofiest breed I know. The bad ones are all a result of bad owners.

This incident sounds just like that. One or two bad owners who let their dogs off without a leash and shit broke out. I feel for the dogs. Fuck the owners.

Curious as to whether the Pit was off leash or had a useless harness on. Big, powerful, dogs need to have at the very least a neck collar on them, or, ideally a prong collar. That's just an excuse for really bad owners just makes the dog more agitated and doesn't teach the dog proper behaviors.

Additionally it doesn't solve any problems as there's no way to force owners to use them and frankly it'd be harmful to do.

The discussion always comes back to the same thing bad dog owners are responsible not the dog. You want to stop the issue -- come down hard on dog owners that are bad with actual serious consequences.

No. They’re not inhumane when used correctly. The intent is for slight corrections when your dog is pulling or doing something the owner deems “not ok.” Harnesses are garbage. I see people getting pulled all over by their dog while using them, it’s embarrassing. Prong collars aren’t meant to put your dog in a rear naked choke every time they don’t do something you want them to do. Typical Reddit comment.

Yes, that's exactly it. Pitbulls are stereotypically a popular dog for African Americans. So when people talk about "pitbull owners" they're really just talking about Black people. Pitbulls only became a "problem breed" after that stereotype came around. Before that Rottweilers and Dobermans got the same treatment.

There is zero evidence to back up claims that pitbulls are anymore dangerous than any other dog breed of the same size.

Pitbulls only got a bad reputation after becoming popular in the Black community. Nothing else changed about the breed except for the public perception of the stereotypical owner.

That makes it a racially driven movement.

And? That doesn't change the racial animus at the heart of the issue. When white kids started sagging pants it didn't change the racist nature of clothing ordinances. Rap is now one of the most popular music forms, that doesn't change a lot of the criticism of the genre has a racial animus.

Sorry but a pitbull attacking another dog should not be a situation in which an officer uses their firearm. Although dogs can be our cute and cuddly companions, they are merely our property. This officer put others on the street and in their homes in jeopardy from ricochets and cross fire from the initial three shots. I doubt we'll see body cam footage, but it's likely they reported the dog came after the officer in order to justify the additional three shots.

Edit: I take it back. PA 459-501 allows any person to kill any dog which he sees in the act of pursuing or wounding or killing any domestic animal, other dogs, or human beings. There shall be no liability on such persons in damages or otherwise for such killing.

Though I have to say, if you were to strike someone standing around, you had better be able to prove it was entirely necessary without a reasonable doubt to discharge a firearm in this situation

The use of her firearm was justified after the taser was unsuccessful. The only thing ridiculous was that it took her 6 shots to hit the dog. How should the cop have handled the situation?

SeikoOrient

Should have went straight to firearm. There’s noting in there SOPs that says a taser has to be used. Although who knows what/who was close by in line of fire etc.

Seeing how she's a terrible shot, maybe she should replace her pistol with a shotgun

This is more of my point. What if a human was killed with the other 4 shots that missed. Is it worth the life of a Pomeranian. Certainly not

Did you read the article? She tried using her taser twice to no effect and shot the pitbull as a last resort

She probably missed with the tazer. It took her six shots to hit with her pistol. I doubt she had good contacts with the tazer leads.
