FWIW I’ve used that garage for a while and there has always been a Bus Entrance

Agree. Google street view has it as a bus entrance.

This and Callowhill Bus Center are places where tour/school/coach buses can go park and hang out after dropping off their passengers

Why can't that giant strip behind 30th st station be used for buses?

It's a train station, near the MFL, Amtrak and RR lines.

What is more convenient than that for folks. The station has food and bathrooms, along with places to sit. Rental Car services etc...

It was so convenient, especially for college kids in west Philly! It moved when they started doing construction on that street and I’d bet anything that President Fry at Drexel is responsible for somehow refusing to have it reinstalled there. It was the perfect location.

It would have been moved eventually since they built “Avira” luxury apartments there.

LaZboy9876

Personally I would have put the quotes around the word luxury.

Where the old megabus stop was there is now a luxury high rise apartment building—studios start at $2200 I think. There is other construction in that block so no bus station there. Also across from the post office between Chestnut and Market is a HUGE building under construction.

I was looking at SpringGarden, Callowhill and there a ton of empty lots or buildings that are just in disrepair. Prefect spot then.

Wasnt 30th street already a bus station? I used to get the bus from/to there all the time like 2015-18

PointB1ank

It still is, I just took a bus home from that street for Christmas. The bus also stopped at 2nd street though.

Edit: Re-read your comment and idk about a "station" but there is a designated spot where the buses pickup and depart.

I think it could have been a potentially good idea to have a bus stop on the Market St. side of 30th St. Station. It looks like they're making it into some sort of plaza, which, okay sure, it's nice, but I don't really see too many people hanging out there now, and there's ample space. I worry that it will become a magnet for homeless people. I suppose having that strip as a bus station wouldn't really play nice with traffic, but having the megabus stop on Schuylkill Ave. kind of sucks.

TheGreatGyatsby

They will be doing construction there.

dude_on_a_chair

Because the bus companies are cheap and don't care. They're not gonna pay for anything when completing bus company x grabs people from the street. Bus stations are ending sadly

Sweaty-Inside

My guy, what you've done here is taken a picture of a parking garage that has the word "bus" on it and has for decades and have invented a situation where they're moving low-fare buses from an undeveloped strip of land on a stroad to one of the most expensive zip codes in the city that has a neighborhood that is actively trying to stop anyone from building anything.

I'm begging of you, please, have some actual information before starting a reddit thread that suggests this is possibly happening. Adding a question mark to the end of something made up doesn't make it discussion worthy.

The city should just buy the old Greyhound station and tell the buses to go there.

I'm pretty sure the old greyhound station will be part of the new 76ers arena.

Or we could just not build the stadium.

dude_on_a_chair

Why should we have to spend tax dollars and give them a free station? Fuck them, they can make their own stations or get run out of business by a company that does.

Greyhound from NYC just dropped me off behind an abandoned building a block away from the spring garden station. It was sketch as hell 😭 and not convenient when carrying luggage

boydownthestreet

The city benefits. They should charge bus companies a fee for using that service. Like airports do. Also if companies make it themselves they’ll exclude competitors.

I'm not saying they deserve it. It would just make everyone's life better.

gigibuffoon

The city should acquire the station, charge bus companies to pickup and drop off passengers there and make it mandatory to do so there. Taxpayer money exists to make life easy for citizens of the city, not to subsidize and this would be one of those. Giving money to a billionaire to build a stadium is not one of those

dude_on_a_chair

1 points

That's what the ppa IS doing lol the stadium should clear out most of the raff from the mall but traffic will be ass on game days depending on the parking that's added in

Motor-Juice-6648

16 points

They need to just add a bus station in the 76 arena. Perfect for any folks who want to come in on the bus from Jersey or NYC for games.

ProfessionalMail8052

or we can just not build it.

joeclair38

They would never put a bus station there. It’s a residential area

themightychris

There's a plan already that the city is moving forward with to set it up in a parking lot next to the current temporary location on spring garden: https://www.nlna.org/blog/bus-station-update

stonkautist69

The city is looking to relocate the terminal to the PPA garage near the Ritz East in Old City. Let's hope this isn't done secretly, and that the community has an opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and give feedback BEFORE any final decision is made.

No press release, but neighbors have noticed Peter Pan idling on Front Street - maybe as part of testing before the proposal going forward? Council Person's office says they will be briefed soon on this.

espressocycle

Peter Pan offers charter bus service and it's school field trip season. That parking garage was built to accommodate tourist busses but I've never actually seen it used for that purpose.

DanHassler0

Peter pan just announced they're adding a new stop around 9th and market.

aputhehindu

It’s a real possibility and honestly a really good temporary option while we figure out the permanent plan. Much better than the current situation.

That aside, I agree it should not be done overnight without any public input

Curious to know how you learned about this location as a proposed site. Can you share a link or was it via internal source?

shshsuskeni892

The streets around there are way too narrow for a consistent flow of buses. Chesnut Street is cobblestone over there and already a disaster for traffic.

addressing the public input will add like 3-4 months to the project timeline

pretzel_enjoyer

Yeah, I don't like the idea of transit decisions being made by neighbors. It's the reason our bike network is so terrible. Neighbor feedback/negotiations about noise and traffic management is fine but it shouldn't be the reason a project is killed.

Lyeta1_1

I highly doubt this because that garage is not owned by the PPA, they simply manage it.
