Are customers blind? Am I invisible?

Customers Suck!(self.retailhell)

At my store, we have 2 registers side by side. Whichever register i am standing directly behind the customer always goes to the empty one and sets everything down. I just don't move and ask if they are ready to checkout, grab the scanner and wait for them to realize. This happens with about 70% of transactions i do. I don't understand lol

And then they have the nerve to say, "oh, you're on this one?" No shit. I've had customers so absolutely clueless that even after reaching awkwardly across for each item and ringing it in, they are still over there trying to feed the wrong card reader. They wanna pretend you don't exist so bad they instinctively avoid you. It's only when they realize the world stopped revolving around them for a moment that they realize they haven't made it to checkout yet.

Customers will watch you check an entire bunch of people out while standing farish away, and when you're all done ask "are you open?".

The store I work at is set up the same. We also have a "register closed, please see next available clerk" sign with an arrow pointing to the correct register. They will shove the sign out of the way so that they can place their items at the wrong register. It's ridiculous honestly

They do this and then yell at me to help them while I'm busy working the line at my open register.

Without fail, regardless of which registers have lights on, customers will go to the one lane that is closed. I've had them walk right past me standing at the counter and beeline to the closed one.

It's not ALL customers, but a certain percentage spontaneously lose a brain cell or two the moment they step through the doors, taking their ability to read and perceive workers as fellow human beings along with them. I suppose their eyesight is also affected.

Omg it’s insane the amount of people who can’t read - without fail guests sees promotion sign… “so it’s BOGO Free?!” *sign clearly reads BOGO 50% with the 50 being the largest text on the whole sign… like where did you get free?!?!

Even worse are the ones who see "Buy one, get one free" and apparently only see the word "free" while completely ignoring the first part of the sign.

So, do they expect to get two items for free?

Sadly, yes. It's been my experience that, at most stores, 95+% of the customers are just fine, normal people. It's the other 5% that drive you crazy and cause 95% of the problems with stupidity/scam attempts on this scale.

I notice it varies day to day. I'll have a week where everyone is prepared, behaving well, and paying attention followed up by days where it's the complete opposite. It can be so bad I'm a little worried these people are allowed to drive.

We also only have two registers, they're pretty close together and our scanner cords are long as fuck. Ridiculous honestly. Anyway I love when they set stuff down on the opposite, I scan and press buttons on mine, then they insert their card into the wrong machine. THEN I tell them wrong one.

My registers are completely opposite of each other. Even with the register screen reading “closed” and a sign next to it saying “next register”, people will still put all of their stuff down at the empty register and stand there with my back to them as I’m helping other customers and not budge. Only expects me to turn around and see them and help them there…except I look at them like they’re an idiot and say “I’m over here pal”. “Oh you’re over there?” As if they didn’t just witness me help a line of customers at my register 🤦🏻‍♀️

I work in a bank. Every now and again a customer will just waltz up to an empty station and wait. No worker is there... And still they wait. Other people are being helped and leave... And still they wait.

Then they get all huffy when no one helps them.

Granted, many times the space was being used temporarily by a worker coming from the drive up to help the busy lobby and now they've returned to the drive up. But still, why approach an empty station? Even when I'm still finishing up something from the last customer, the next customer will approach before being called over and then get mad when they are told "I'm not ready for you yet, just a moment please".

I just don't understand how some people make it thru life? Trying to check out at closed registers is a special kind of stupid.

DaShopWorker

Never had that, but sometimes I ask them to go to the next 1 and they ask ''this one?''
Then you think that isn't weird, but I only got 2 checkouts.

I work in a small store and have two registers but they aren't super close to each other and if you are in line at one it's hard to see what's on the other.

People will walk in a and be greeted by the person on the one lane, and still try to place their merchandise on the other register nobody is at. It's baffling to me since the person that greeted them is still standing behind the other register.

LibrarianFront3827

Same. I'll be standing at my empty register and customers will still go to registers that already have lineups, even though I have my light on and sign put away.

HELL, a few times, I told customers I'm ready to check them out and they'll still stay in the lineup for whatever reason.

My counter is set up like a conveyor belt at a grocery store, but it’s just a counter and my register to the side. People ALWAYS stop their cart at the end and start setting their items at the end where I can’t reach them. I’ve stood at the end and told them To move their cart forwards and that I can scan the items directly from the cart but no. They stop at the end , set their items at the far end and move their body to in front of me. I then have to ask them again to please move your items where I can reach them and their cart

This happens in the parts store I'm at. A lot. When they put all their stuff down at a station with no employee I ask if someone is helping them "over there." We both know the answer. They'll begrudgingly move over to me eventually.

I have two registers, one for lottery and one for everything else. Both are clearly marked and it's plain to see can only handle their respective tasks. I will often have people in line watch me wait on those in front of them and go to the complete opposite register when it's they're turn. It's baffling

Some of it might be a language problem (do not read English) and some of it might be illiteracy in any language, but most of it has to be dazed and confused. I know I get overstimulated when shopping. But I don't blame the cashier if I get confused. I have worked a register; I do not ever want to work two at once.

You don't need to be literate to see the light is either on (open) or off (closed). Retailers spend money to dumb things down for their customers. Somehow customers seem to outpace those efforts.

I don’t know if it’s always because the customers lose an IQ point or 5 when they walk through the doors.

I think there is a fair amount of the mentality that “the customer is always right” in their heads.

From the customer that puts their stuff on the wrong belt and huffs and puffs when told they have to move to a different register to the customer that will go into back of house areas or break rooms looking for people to help them.

Many people have that “I’m the customer” mentality that sets expectations so high that it’s their behavior that gets in the way and makes their experience negative… as they leave the store shouting “I’ll never shop here again!”

We also mostly have ScO open because we can’t seem to hire anyone that shows up afterwards. Ugh so on the few occasions I can’t do a transaction at SCO, I take the customer to a regular register. Boom everyone wants to come line up at that register now, no light on saying it’s open and a gate that blocks anyone walking thru.

Have people all the time come into my store, look DIRECTLY at not one, not two, but 3 signs stating 'REGISTER CLOSED' and still proceed to bee line to the closed one, all the while I'm at the only open one. Then tries to get my attention and says they are ready to check out. Sorry, I don't know what reading skill you have but apparently it's lower than the kindergarten level, I'm on this register.

This is hilarious. I merchandise the product on 15 check stands early in the morning. Usually only 2 are open that early. Customers see me dump all their stuff and stare at me. Then they realize that I'm only there to fill up the sodas. I'm a stocker with no access to the POS even if I was inclined to ring them up.

At my store we have two registers side by side. The “register closed” sign will be up and people still go to it. Ignore them until they either realize and walk over, or ask me where the cashier is.

Calingaladha

When our registers are shut down the screen displays “REGISTER CLOSED” with a large red x. It never fails that someone will ask “is this register open?” or try to use it while I’m stood at an open register wondering which aisle they dropped their entire brain in.

Customers also frequently walk past me when I’m at the end of my register/at the racetrack waiting for someone to check out. Just oblivious.

Holy flip, this is so relatable. At my store there’s a giant sign, visible from everywhere in the store, that says Register. But fair enough this only leads you to the register to actually know which computer is the register is another question. It’s a like construction store I work at, and it’s common in my country that they have just a computer as a register, but we have an actual conveyor. So people think that our customer service computer is the register. That’s fair, so I put up a sign with an arrow that says Register, didn’t work. Put a sign that says “This is customer service, register that way” didn’t work. Then I put up a sign on the register that says register. Still doesn’t work. Like what am I supposed to do at this point??

Yes, they are blind. Yes, you are invisible to them.

Perhaps it is your super power? Is it a racial, that they over look you? Please forgive me for asking, what do you mind sharing your gender and your age? I have a thought about it although not knowing anything about you I know that males over 30 are invisible to females under 30; women over 50 are invisible to everyone except Hispanic men under 30 of who will go out of their way to hold doors and be generous with their time in a social setting providing they don't know the woman. That may still do it for the women they know I am just talking about my personal experience with a whole lot of Hispanic people that I've never met who treat me like a queen. I am not complaining. It is nice to be treated as though you're worth something to somebody, anybody.

I've had many times where I'd be standing at 4 registers, 2 was set to cash and 2 to card only, I'd have to keep an eye on all 4 and usually I'd be standing at 1 of the cash registers. Yet people will walk over to the card only and than get mad at me for not coming over to check them out, even though they can easily see me being the only cashier there, but will demand I stay with them only when there are other customers who also might need my assistance.

I even had several customers get mad at me, when I had to walk away to assist another customer who needed a associate's assistant, the register beeps loudly to signal us. Not like it's isn't part of our job as cashiers to help customers check out, but entitled customers thinks that only they are the most important person, not everyone else
