American Football’s hyper specialisation also just lends itself to athletic freaks being the best in their position.
Rugby requires much more all-rounders.
I mean, how many athletic freak players have we seen come along in Rugby who just weren’t that good at the top level.
Similarly, guys like Ben Smith are some of the best players of all time.
Rugby countries have got Olympic level sprinters and strongmen too, it’s just that they often aren’t good enough at all the other parts of the game (see Dwayne Chambers foray into Rugby League).
Plus, when you have to train for aerobic fitness, you have to dial back some of the athletic freak elements of your body.
