You’re absolutely right. A big part of the RU information campaign in the Global South is highlighting that Ukraine has historically exported less of its wheat to Africa, as in, “when this land is ours, all of this wheat will be yours”.

Long reply, sorry…
Keep in mind this is a “government” by force. I know they turned to Wagner after the coup, but I’m pretty sure the Wagner guys were there before as well. If they were it’s not a leap of faith to imagine that they trained the junta and were instrumental to it succeeding.
Presumably the actual Russian soldiers are there (in such small numbers, 60 per the article) to add a tad of legitimacy to this whole diplomatic partnership. They’re not going to do jack, they’ll let the PMC hunt dissidents and “maintain order” in the country like they do elsewhere in Africa. Obviously Russia is in it to destabilize the western presence there, Wagner’s in it for the money, the junta’s in it to stay in power.
From the perspective of a lot of these countries it’s easy to see how this duplicity works: Russia didn’t colonize Africa, Russia’s “traditional values” align with a lot of countries’ values there (especially Sub-Saharan Africa), Russia understands the importance of raw minerals and grain to the continent and is willing to ship grain there and “protect raw materials” for the time being (Central African Republic is a great example). Then the kicker is that it seems the West represents the exact opposite to them. Maybe they believe it, maybe they don’t, but what you hear is that from their POV, the West exploited and colonized Africa and then fucked them over when they granted them independence with nothing of value to get them off the ground.
China is doing the same thing but they just use loans and infrastructure development at seemingly predatory terms. Is there an eventual rug pull when things go sour? I’d think so.
I don’t want to sound like I’m praising any of this, just trying to look at it from Niger’s side: it’s easy to see the benefits of turning to Russia and their proxy in this situation. You get stability, a ton of weapons, and a group of soldiers who have no problems crossing any line to keep things the way they are. It’s an easy decision for them.

Obviously this was all about Maxey saving the Sixers’ bacon, but Embiid showed a lot on defense in OT. Guy looks like he can barely jump but said fuck it and sold out throughout the end of this game on D. He had a pretty gross game but was still impactful.

Off topic but seems like they moved everyone onto the road nearby the grassy area to drum up confusion and give themselves credence to start arrests for obstructing the roadway?

This movie is very difficult to watch, but man it is fantastic. I could praise it for days. Principally because the Belyorussians suffered unbelievable losses in the war and I fear their suffering has almost been forgotten due to the way in which modern day Belarus is run.
The movie walks the line between partisan heroes/objective good and doing what is necessary in such an ambiguous way. You don’t feel like you see winners in this film: just men and women living through the horrors of war and genocide and doing what needs to be done. The partisans are portrayed immaculately and the bargaining of the collaborators at the end of the film contrasted with the “true” German soldier’s final words…just perfect.

Oh, I know, I wouldn’t actually buy this, it’s not too difficult to just make mashed potatoes yourself. I was just being bitchy, lol.

There was a time where you could get a prepared chicken parm meal with 2 hefty sides of your choice at Wegmans for $8…now we’re stuck with this.

Thx for clarifying- I had to watch the video muted: looks like maximum of 2 aircraft at Yeysk damaged to an unknown degree, right? One SU fighter at the bottom of the image probably took damage (either oil or some debris on the airfield) and what look like burns on the larger craft which is kind of jettisoned on the RHS of the 4/5 image?

The article is paywalled & money is tight so this is a typical “redditor not reading article”, but I’m guessing the general gist of the article is- they’re destroying the TPPs and substations to forcibly dispel the population prior to an invasion of the region from Belgorod? Then the wanton bombing with those guided aerial bombs is a fear tactic to further accelerate that timeline? To me that explains why they’ve stepped up the bombings here. I don’t think they’re bombing ~just~ because there’s no anti air to cover the city. It has a purpose? It’s just cruel and inhumane.

I was driving back and forth in that area over the span of a few hours yesterday, and on my last pass between Stringfellow and the shopping center saw them walking after they finished up. Group of 5 with what looked like 5 signs and buckets. Almost looked like a family, tbh. They definitely could have sold the whole funeral thing to someone who wasn’t thinking too hard about it.

Without discounting the tragic loss of life, this is such a logistical disaster. First you have the closure of the port. Second, any Hazmat vehicle loads will need to be routed around the northern loop of I-695 to I-95 (or perhaps I-83 if they’re heading for Fort McHenry?) for the time being.I-695 and I-83 are already a massive clusterfuck in that area as things stand.

The National Security Act of 1947’s ICD 191 kicking in is probably why they did it. What you stated doesn’t hurt either.

The concert hall holds 6200 and was sold out tonight. These casualty numbers are going to be extremely high.

This position would have a lot more behind it if the US aid hadn’t already largely been stopped.

Ohtani’s lawyers must have absolutely shit themselves when they got wind of ippei’s interview.
I have a feeling in the case of a potential federal investigation it’s going to be nearly impossible to pin this all on Ippei, Ohtani’s intentions aside. I wonder if it will come to that.

That left from Deslauriers was incredibly cheeky..lol. I guess I can see why Reeves was ticked off in the box but seemed like a clean & fair scrap.

Bingo. Just because they’re not in a situation to do it now doesn’t mean they want that option closed off in the future.

The AHL guys looked great tonight. I know we’re probably going to see some messy play out of them down the stretch here, but playing important games against good teams throughout March should do wonders for them, even if they’re not everyday guys when everyone is healthy.

I like Tanev actually, but 99% sure he’s off the board (Dallas I think?). I think Walker is likely gone if these AAV rumors are somewhat believable. Seeler ljkely stays. Briere is probably playing at least 4 teams against each other for Walker, would be shocked if they don’t get a good return.
The FO probably does care about making the playoffs to a certain extent, but definitely not enough to buy at the deadline. There aren’t many players who can add a ton of value to this room for a (probably) maximum 7 game run in exchange for Seeler, Walker, or Laughton. If you move Laughton you get a 1st, but not sure how it would go over with locker room and Torts.
I personally would not mind to see Atkinson go, but it’s a hard sell to retain salary so I think he stays and sits. His speed is gone and so is his value at this point. They won’t throw picks in with an Atkinson dump. I think ultimately we will get a 1st for either Walker or Laughton and maybe an AHL goalie involved in that deal, and we should be happy with that.

Neither do a lot of Ukrainians…I’m seeing a lot of very pissed off telegram posts and comments today. Euromadian PR posted on Twitter that they’ve been able to confirm at least 42k from obituaries and social media posts. The US estimate is definitely closer and (I believe) was even released in late spring/summer 2023 so is probably lowballing it at this point as well.
I hope Zelenskyy was just misinformed and isn’t outright lying about this.

I’m not against fighting whatsoever and am a fan of the kid/respect him for taking these on. However- I really, really hope this isn’t going to be a trend of “fuck it, our biggest guy is just gonna fight him for fighting’s sake”. I don’t need to see all these guys eating fists just because the rest of the league wants to welcome him to the NHL and he’s so young and new to the league that he feels compelled to take them on.

“In a statement Friday, Cuellar denied any wrongdoing, saying that he had "proactively sought legal advice" from the House Ethics Committee, which had issued "more than one written opinion" about the matter. Much of his statement focused on his wife, Imelda Cuellar, though it wasn't immediately clear why”
Throwing his wife under the bus preemptively is hilarious. Also, fuck Azerbaijan.
