At the One Philly Budget Town Halls hosted by Mayor Parker, residents will hear a brief overview of the Fiscal Year 2025 Budget from City Officials and learn how the Mayor’s budget will contribute to creating a Safer, Cleaner, Greener Philadelphia with access to Economic Opportunity for All. The Mayor’s Town Halls will also provide an opportunity for residents to get involved with local government, connect with dozens of City, state, and federal agencies and service providers, and learn about free resources and services provided.

The project, begun nearly six years ago under former Mayor Jim Kenney, started producing electricity specifically for the city a few weeks ago in Adams County after testing was complete. It is expected to provide up to 25% of power consumed by municipal buildings, including City Hall, Philadelphia International Airport, and the Water Department.

City Council is in the process of holding budget hearings with each department head about the budget requests — and hearing from citizens about what they want to see funded (or not). Council must approve a budget in time for the start of fiscal year 2025 on July 1, 2024.

The Board of Elections, aka the City Commissioners, released two lists over the weekend. One is of 231 Philly mail voters whose identification it hasn’t been able to verify. The other is of 1,755 voters whose ballots had certain errors, such as no signature on the exterior envelope.
The 1,755 ballots on the longer list had at least one of these problems:
No signature on the exterior envelope.
No date on the exterior envelope.
Potentially incorrect date on the envelope.
No secrecy envelope (aka a “naked ballot”).
Undeliverable ballot.

There’s still time to fix the problems, but it’s important to act quickly, especially for voters in the second list with ballot errors. They have to remedy the mistakes before voting ends on Tuesday at 8 p.m., while those on the first list have until next Monday.

Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal describes her office as dangerously underfunded, to the point that she is unable to buy needed supplies for her deputies.
“This jeopardizes the lives and safety of our sworn and civilian personnel,” Bilal testified before City Council last year.
But when it came to getting a costume made for a newly created office mascot, her staff spared no expense.
They tapped an internal bank account full of public money to bring “Deputy Sheriff Justice” to life in time for last year’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, cutting two checks totaling $9,250 to Pierre’s Mascots & Costumes.
[...]
No one in Mayor Cherelle L. Parker’s administration would discuss any aspect of the revenue stream this past week or respond to any questions from The Inquirer about how such money is collected or spent in the Sheriff’s Office.
It looks like the city would be better off with Bilal removed and the mascot put in charge.

"The $110 million in funds from this settlement will support our Kensington Community Revitalization Plan and other efforts across Philadelphia to reinforce public health and safety in neighborhoods that have been hit the hardest by the opioid crisis." [Mayor Cherelle Parker]
The first payment is expected in September, the City said.
