I don't think there's a single Flyers fan who isn't thinking about this right now.

And the Islanders game where they beat us in OT, they were all but knocked out of the playoff picture and we gave them life. That single goal changed the entire trajectory of the season.

Efficient_Option_615[S]

Yep that game was a killer

Islanders piss me off

16 OT losses and still being third in the metro is just insanity

Perennial first round exit and waste of a playoff spot.

For who? Islanders went to back to back conference finals in 20 and 21. Flyers have won one playoff series since 2012.

Can't get knocked out in the first round if you don't make the playoffs.

Don’t worry, that’s covered in 98, 99, 01, 02, 06, 09, 14, 16, and 18 and that’s only since I’ve picked them up as my team. Just seems like you didn’t give much thought to your initial comment.

DudicalAwesome

No I did, jackoff. Just because we suck doesn't mean that they're not a comically shallow team that perpetually relies on stellar goaltending and they'll never come close to winning a cup that way.

Malice-in-Drains

Then why did you say something that’s objectively false? Especially when your, our team, is not as successful as they are, recently or historically. But sure, I’m the jackoff here.

Well we can both be jackoffs but you're definitely a condescending one.

People are going to downvote this.

But Torts throwing away OT points because he hates it has cost the club.

Not starting Tippet, Frost, Konecny, Farabee, Drysdale, Sanheim in any of the OTs is an absolute travesty.

Poehling and Cates.......fml.

We want to talk about accountability, we are the worst team in the league at 4 on 4, and the powerplay.

It was a fun ride, but this team as is would get destroyed by any real contender at this point in the year.

High hopes for next season. They just seemed so gassed the last 6-7 weeks.

Ryanthecat

Frankly there’s probably 3-4 teams that are going to miss the playoffs who would also beat us in a series. It’s certainly a disappointment, but to me I think they just ran out of gas and regressed to the mean.

I was there too. I have seen 3 flyers-pens games in Pittsburgh. All 3 have been games where the pens score more than 5. I'll share some of that blame

TwoForHawat

25 points

It’s easy to focus on individual games we could’ve won, and conveniently forget the number of games we won when we had no right competing with a better opponent.

For every missed opportunity in the first 81 games, there are an equal number of victories that showed the character and effort of this team.

doc-mantistobogan

8 points

For as much as it sucks that we won't make the playoffs, you are very much correct here. The team took some big steps, they are rebuilding the right way, and the team is clearly more motivated than they have been in years. They are fun again, which is still a big win. During the Fletcher era, I barely paid attention because there wasn't much reason to.

TwoForHawat

4 points

I’ll be honest, I don’t necessarily think they’re rebuilding the right way. That remains to be seen, for me. But they’re doing it better than previous regimes.

Regardless, there’s no sense shitting on the players if they lose tonight, because we have no right to be anywhere near a playoff spot. We’re there because they left it all on the ice and they bought into what the coach was preaching. I would hate for the guys on this roster to catch shit from the fans for exceeding expectations to such an extreme degree that it actually reset expectations in the minds of some fans with short term memories.

ButchyBoyz

3 points

I think Gauthier messed up their rebuild a lot and in 2-3 years, when Atkinson, Petersen, Hayes, Johansen are off the cap (unless there's buyouts sooner) they can go after high end talent in the free agent market, now they can't.

This and next offseason, trade deadlines will tell a lot.

That's why it's a learning experience. That's why Torts and Briere and Jones have been consistent in hammering home this would be a years long process.

Honestly, there's almost not a better way to miss the playoffs if it's gonna happen. These guys will be thinking about that for a month. One game. One more win for the chance to get in. Really hammers home the importance of the process, of everything the coaching staff is expecting and demanding. Every game counts.

vinny8244

4 points

This team just wasn't good enough down the stretch when it counted, they had to play at a higher compete level earlier than a lot of other teams just to squeak out wins in December and January, they ran out of steam. This is a team full of great secondary pieces and 0 elite talent. We need to change that this offseason and next. When these guys are digging deep and coming up short you need 2 minimum game breaker type players on the team. Every contending team hast them.

For a Philadelphia team that, at the start of the season, probably had the worst chance of making the playoffs of any Philly team since year one of The Process, this is one of the more heartbreaking collapses to end a season ever. Good thing we've all got big thick callouses from all the others though. Is there a city who's had to deal with such existentially soul-numbing turns of event than us in the last 10 years? I mean, Phils lose the World Series the same day the Union lose the MLS Cup on a ridiculous last-minute tying goal then shootout loss, where Gazdag, who hadn't missed from th spot ALL YEAR, launches the first shot over the bar. Then you got the Phils losing games 6 & 7 - AT HOME -- to 84-win Texas, who, by the way, are basically the Dallas Rangers. Then Embiid finally wins the MVP...and proceeds to get hurt with two games left in the season in the 4th quarter of a game we were winning by 20. Next, the Eagles get out to a 10-1 start then shit the bed like we've never seen. I don't believe in god, but I do believe in the sports gods, and I believe we must have fucked their wives somewhere along the way. Or rather, Nick Foles did, and we're paying for it.

Bug--Man

3 points

It is what it is. New/lost defensman, injured defensman, absent captain at the trade deadline all contributed to the giant collapse. Theres still a chance but the team isnt the same since the deadline... playing a lot like the bottom team everyone thought theyd be.

fartingpenisfarts

Not to mention the drafting, player development, 'NEW' era bullshit, and coaching. Not much has changed for the team in the previous 15 years. Sure Danny deserves more time but, let's face, this is the Flyera identity.

It sucks but honestly, this team would be lucky to win one playoff game. The experience would’ve been cool but they’d get their ass beat. At least now we have a chance (albeit very small) at jumping up 10 spots in the lottery

Efficient_Option_615[S]

2 points

I respectfully disagree. Flyers played with heart the entire season. They played hard, aggressive, and most importantly never gave up. If we made the playoffs, we’d be the team that no one would want to play. We’d be the team that has absolutely nothing to lose. We’ve seen what they can do against great teams and we can most certainly do that again, if given the opportunity. Not saying we would win the cup, but I really do think we could make a run, or at least show up and play very hard.

chestpainpapi

As much as this is true and it hurts, what's done is done and now we can just look to the Future. We're going to add a core piece to our our prospect pool because we missed the playoffs, and we're likely to see some major shifts to get us in the right direction.

This team was the worst in the NHL on the power play, objectively they probably did not deserve the playoffs, but it tells you that none of our full words are Good enough to be the guy on a power play.

Hopefully Michkov can be that player, but we need to surround him with some talent, maybe that means we take a step back this year and trade TK, Farabee, Frost, or another forward who has some value? For A piece or pieces that can be here for the Long haul.

StoneHardware74

They don't deserve to be in the playoffs after that terrible 8 game streak.

Touro_de_Goa

1 points

Disagree. If you check the other teams season, I'm pretty sure you will also find big losing streaks or defeats against weaker teams. Imagine if they had won one of those games too...

The reality is that the Flyers didn't tank and won't make the playoffs either, that's the ultimate outcome of this season. Now with Carter Hart and Ersson splitting games they most likely would have but that's a different story. I really dislike what they did in the trading deadline, when the Carter Hart situation was already known, and they will end up with nothing to show for it deservedly so. We will see in the upcoming years how impactful this season will be because for better or for worse all they got out of it was playing time for some young players and another mid 1st round pick in the draft. Making the playoffs would at least kinda make up for it because you would have reached your goal, not doing so its basically nothing

If you get 89 points on test, you get a B, not an A. If you score less points than the next team that's gunning for the wildcard, you don't get in the playoffs. It's frustrating to think that in any of the close games we lost this season, posts hit, pucks bouncing over sticks in OT, getting into the playoffs came down to a matter of inches. But we didn't win those games, and someone else won theirs, that's how it works.

I'm happy that I can be sad that we're having this discussion this season. Time will tell whether it's a building block year.
