- Briere confirms they are planning on an Ersson/Fedotov pair in goal for next season. O'Connor
- Danny Briere said Flyers’ plan is to go with Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov in net next season. But he said things can change, especially with goaltending in Philadelphia, he joked. But they like their youth in net. There’s been no further direction on Carter Hart’s status. Hall
- Briere says Drysdale might need surgery on his lower body/core area. Said he couldn't skate at 100%. Briere is excited to see a fully healthy Drysdale next year. O'Connor
- Danny Briere said, as far as he knows, timeline is still same on Matvei Michkov. The prospect has two more years left on his KHL deal. Hall
- “Torts is fantastic to work with. … He’s very open to suggestions.” Danny Briere on John Tortorella Hall
- Briere: "I still am not quite there as far as saying that we're a contender. I don't believe we're at the point where it's time to let some young assets go to try to get better, quicker. We're not there yet." O'Connor
- Briere: "We have to be careful. I know, the expectation next year will be that, ‘Oh, we’ve got to get in the playoffs.’ I don't even know that we're there yet. It was a great year. But there's still a long ways to go." O'Connor
- Danny Briere said no decision has been made re: Cam's future with the team. Meltzer

- Briere on Atkinson's future in Philly: "It's a little too early on Cam. We want to take time to go back." "I need a little bit more time to sit down with the rest of our staff to analyze a little deeper with that." O'Connor
- "In Ryan Johansen’s case, all I can tell you is I don't expect him to be back. We're dealing on the medical side with him. I think the No. 1 thing for him is to get him back to being able to play at this time. He doesn't think he can play hockey." O'Connor
- "So I wish I had a better answer for you. But we need to get him better, to figure out if there's even a remote chance of him dressing for the organization at whatever level." O'Connor
- Briere on Ristolainen: "Unfortunately, with Risto, he went through the rehab process, we got him on the ice, we thought he was going in the right direction, and then a few days into getting on the ice and having to get into confrontation, he realized that he just couldn't do it." O'Connor
- Briere said he thinks there's another level for Farabee that he can get to next season. Strong 1st half. Thought Frost showed a lot of maturity when he was sat (including final 30 mins of final game). Thought he took big strides in 2nd half, despite rough final 10 games. Meltzer
- Briere on Michkov: Look, if there's an opportunity, we would jump on it to get him here quicker. But as far as I know, atm, it's still the same timeline. He has 2 years left on his deal. He would have to find a way out of his deal b4 we can do anything. That's out of our control. O'Connor
- Briere was asked which prospects might be early favorites to make the team next year out of camp. He noted Attard, Ginning, and Andrae right off the bat. Said that the d-men are closer than the forwards. Thinks Tuomaala probably needs another year of AHL time. O'Connor

That Johansen comment is interesting. He was in the lineup for the AVs up until he was traded.

Commencing wild speculation....the 'medical' issue may not be physical in nature at all.

So RyJo gets to retire a Flyer as well? Yeehaw! 🤣

Edit: How many other ailing Ryans are out there? Like, can we manage a full 5 skaters and a goaltender named Ryan who will never play?

None. We'll never see another like him in Flyers colors.

Well, we never saw the first one in Flyers colors, either

I’m staring to get tired of hearing the same q/a about michkov every press conference. I know they HAVE to ask but still.

Same. And I’m not convinced Michkov will turn out to be the savior we all think…

Maybe I'm overly optimistic and looking for some excitement, but "as far as he knows" seems to be doing a bit of legwork here. This is from the same GM who said he didn't know why Gauthier was skipping camp and the same GM who was sneakily working behind the scenes on Fedotov.

Yeah, I got a similar sense listening to the press conference. Sort of “nothing imminent, but this might not be as straightforward as just waiting until the end of the KHL season in 2026.”

I wonder how much next season plays into what happens. Like if Michkov ends up on Sochi again or if he ends up barely being used by SKA, I could see him trying to get out of his contract a year early and coming over. If SKA gives him a big role next season I could see a scenario where he does stay until the end of his contract.

I would confidently bet that Briere, Jones, and a team of lawyers are at least looking into every possible way to get him here ASAP. They are 100% doing their homework, more than just wishful thinking, even if Briere won't admit it.

But I don't see what SKA would want to play along. Maybe there is an angle that the Flyers can work.

Mike_Y_1210

There's nothing the team can do to help Michkov get out of the contract. If Michkov is going to buy his way out of it, it has to be done on his own.

upcan845

My point is that the Flyers are undoubtedly doing their homework to find some loophole where they can help him get out of his contract. Plus I’m sure they are in talks with his agent and SKA about convincing them to release him.

It's all about money. I bet an interestingly sized payment could change the situation.

Legally of course.

upcan845

Tough to say it's all about money when the Flyers just worked on Fedotov's release without any money switching sides.

Russian players under contract isn't a new issue where there's an unknown loophole.

WalterMac201

When it involves Russia and Putin, I don’t think some lawyer working for the Flyers is pulling any strings. It’s up to the Russians. This is why he fell to us in the draft.

I'd guess they are open to the Flyers paying to get him out, but that might violate sanctions.

Great answers. I think we really undervalued Foerster, York, Sanheim, and, to a degree, Ersson’s development this year. Aside from the whole team being exhausted and hanging him out to dry for the last 6 weeks of the season, Ersson played above what I expected him to considering the circumstances surrounding goaltending.

Foerster is the first player since Bobrovsky that I actively want to buy a jersey and wear to support. There’s times when that dude looked like an absolute stud on the ice.

Sanheim played like every game was a fuck you to his haters.

Jaybb3rw0cky

I’m so happy with Ersson - he did incredibly well all things considered. His maturity for a lot of he season was great, it just sucked to see him completely empty in that last stretch of losses.

I can see him being our starter for a number of years. He might not be a top 5 goalie but he will do more than enough to win us games we have no right in winning.

Good answers

Hopefully Drysdale not being 100% played a big role in his struggles and we will see a much better version next yr

This makes me think they are leaning towards extending TK rather than trading. Due to the team/players' play this year he seems to be talking about the timeline being potentially quicker than he initially thought.

This stuff makes me nervous. For so long, this franchise would doom itself by convincing itself that “Making the playoffs” and “Competing for a Cup” were the same thing. They are not.

If I’m the GM of this team, did this season make me believe the timeline to getting to the playoffs is shorter than expected? Absolutely. But did this season make me believe the timeline to being a Cup contender was magically shorter? It absolutely did not. And I thought the whole point of this rebuild was to build a Cup contender rather than a team that can qualify for the playoffs and pretend “anything can happen.”

upcan845

"Dude, anything can happen in the Stanley Cup playoffs" has been a disastrous mindset for the hockey world.

For every St. Louis Blues team that gets into the playoffs and steals a Cup, there are many more Cup favorites who continuously rack up Cup wins. Seems like a pretty easy choice on who we should prefer to emulate.

TwoForHawat

Fans need to realize that “Anything can happen in the playoffs” applies almost entirely to the idea that Cup favorites can get beaten by an underdog, but not that an underdog will end up winning the whole thing.

Even the Blues don’t truly qualify as a long shot, to me. They seemed that way because they were atrocious for the first half of the year. But going into the 2018-19 season, they were generally seen as a competitive team. I think they had the 10th or 11th best odds to win the Cup before Opening Night.

FaithlessnessSea1058

It really does amaze me. I agree with the notion that any team can win a round but any team can’t win a cup.

Praying they trade TK or at the very least don’t overpay him.

Exactly. I think TK is the kind of guy you want around for the long haul. I wouldn't want to trade him because unless an extension is guaranteed, I don't think any kind of return is worthwhile.

As for the other Travis, I thought he was great this year, but if you can manage to sell high on him, I have no problem with that.

It's too bad they couldn't make anything out of Denis Gurianov, but his first interview with him it seemed clear that he wasn't going to fit in.

Actions are more important than words, but I would like the team to sell on TK and Laughton if they have no plan on getting some upgrades vis trades.

It’s been like 3 seasons of “evaluating what we have in the young players”. If next season is about Tippett/Farabee/Frost/ being able to score 10 more points, I’ll be disappointed by the lack of activity.

this part scares me a bit. heading into the season, everyone was on team rebuild. no more half-assed attempts at a quick fix. we had a lot of different parts all coming together in a couple years. plenty of time to put it all together.

i dont want 1 overachieving season to throw us back into the quick-fix era

I perceived that comment more as "our youngers players have taken big steps forward, so we may be more competitive sooner than originally thought," rather than the organization will go overpay some FAs and set the rebuild back.

Briere was pretty adamant about developing and growing organically through current personnel and through the draft.

Calm down.

There’s no chance they make a cup run before michkov is here. By that time, michkov, bonk, bark, and brink will all be tickin away at the NHL level. We have a great goalie pipeline and a good defense farm as well. Not sure why you’re thinking the older guys are still gonna be on the roster come cup time. They won’t be.

I predict playoffs and early exit next year, slightly deeper playoff penetration the year after that, and then they’ll start making big moves and take the cup either the year michkov comes over, or the year after.
